THE REGIMENTAL HISTORY OF THE ROYAL IRISH RIFLES (1793-1912) and other personal effects of Captain Hallum, RIR; including his sword and a medal. The British War Medal being his sole entitlement for the Great War. The medal roll notes 'For overseas service (Switzerland to the UK)'. British War Medal. Correctly impressed. Capt O C J Hallum. Condition GVFCaptain Octavius Claude John Hallum was born in Wormingsford, Essex, in April 1860. He served in the Royal Irish Rifles from 1881 until 1899. He retired but was recalled to service during the Boer War, from 1900 to 1902. Hallum saw active service in the Great War, with his rank being Captain and his unit, Royal Irish Rifles. However, he is on the General and Special Duty roll, which states 'For overseas service (Switzerland to the UK)'. Possibly this was in connection with British POWs in Switzerland. Hallum passed away in Switzerland in 1931. The following items are included in the grouping. History of the Royal Irish Rifles by Lt.Col George Brenton Laurie, RIR; Light Infantry' sword and scabbard by Wilkinson of London, the blade inscribed with three of Claude's initials, C H; Black leather case containing his silver napkin ring, which is inscribed with the places he was posted to while serving with the RIR; Leather-cased book of Hallum and Sadler family photos; Pencil portrait in a wooden frame of a Hallum; Heavy leather suitcase with his initials OCJH; Vintage photo of three RI soldiers; Two A4 sheets, one a copy of a marriage certificate with the signature of Claude's wife Ethel.
