L31 - 3 Napkin Rings made of aluminium alloy. These three napkin rings (each being 5cm diameter, 2.5cm high) commemorate the destruction of the L31 (LZ72) on 2 October 1916 near Potters Bar. Each Napkin Ring is engraved āL 31ā and below that an individual number. These rings are numbered ā1ā, ā2ā and ā4ā. See Plate 27 Note: L31 took part in the famous raid on 24 September 1916 returning home unharmed, but was herself intercepted and destroyed less than two weeks later, on the 2 October 1916, by Lieutenant V Tempest. L31 burst into flames and in the view of many civilians, came crashing to earth near Potters Bar, with the loss of Kapitan-Leutnant Heinrich Mathy and all his crew. As with most of the Zeppelins brought down over England, many sightseers came to celebrate over the remains of the dreaded āZeppā and many souvenirs were taken. Although much of the framework was savaged for war use some of the Duralumin was re-used to make souvenir pieces such as brooches, rings and Napkin Rings.
Destruction of L32 ā Souvenir Napkin Ring. Made of aluminium alloy, (4.7cm diameter, 2.1cm high) of a slightly thicker gauge than others in the collection; this Napkin Ring is made of Aluminium Alloy, engraved āL32 Billericay 1916ā. Below the āL32ā is a depiction of L32 falling in flames with a victorious fighter flying nearby. This ring shows signs of regular use, but the engraving remains clear. GC See Plate 27 Note: L32, under the command of Kapitan-Leutnant Werner Petersen was one of the four Zeppelins tasked to raid England on the night of 23 September 1916. Intercepted by 2nd Lt Frederick Sowrey in the early hours of 24 September 1916, the ship was shot down with the loss of all hands. The crash site was near Billericay, Essex.

Destruction of L33 ā Souvenir Napkin Ring. Aluminium alloy Napkin Ring (5cm diameter, 4cm high). See Plate 27
R38 Commemorative Napkin Ring. Made of aluminium alloy (4.5cm diameter, 3cm high), banded at the top and bottom and stamped in large un-even letters āR.38. Aug. 1921.ā See Plate 27 Note: The R38 (also known as ZR2) was the lead ship in a planned class of 4 rigid airships to be built for the Royal Navy by Shorts Brothers at Cardington. The specifications required that the completed ships would be capable of patrolling for 6 days at up to 22,000ft (6,700m). Some of the design was based upon the wreckage of L70, one of the āSā class height-climber Zeppelins, but crucially, without the understanding that the German Crews were operationally restricted in their rate of turn due to the extremely lightweight framework. As a result of the Armistice, three of the ships were cancelled and the R38 was sold to the US Navy to be taken into service as ZR2. After completion, the R38 was crewed by a mixed British and American crew for the trial flights. On the 4th trial flight, high speed trials were followed by low-altitude rudder tests, to simulate conditions that were expected on the transatlantic delivery flight. In the late afternoon of 24 August 1921 as the R38 flew over the city of Hull, the command was given to apply 15o of rudder; eyewitness reported seeing creases in the hull, then both bow and stern dropping. A fire in the bow was followed by a large explosion and the airship fell into the waters of the Humber estuary killing 44 of the 49 crew aboard. Although parachutes were carried on the R38, the surviving crew did not use them, all being in the stern section of the wreck which made a comparatively slow descent.
