KITNEY C.P.O. CK H.M.S. AJAX”. With original Mention in Despatches certificate, CHIEF PETTY OFFICER COOK EDGAR GEORGE KITNEY C/M37387, 11 NOV 1941. Lot also includes Navy issue slip for Second World War medals (for 5 medals), medal ribbon bars, a wooden napkin ring with a printed metal plate fixed to it ‘From the teak of HMS Ajax, Battle of the River Plate, five recently printed pages ‘Personal Account of the Battle of the River Plate by E.G. Kitney’ and five photocopied pages from the Journal of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners entitled ‘Some Memories of E.G. Kitney, Beadle and Resident Shipkeeper from 1948-1973’. Mention in Despatches, London Gazette 11th November 1941- The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the following Rewards for gallantry and distinguished services in operations in Greek waters – Chief Petty Officer Cook Edgar George Kitney, C/M.37387, H.M.S. Ajax. Edgar George Kitney was born on 14th January 1902 in the village of Rainham in Kent. He entered the Royal Navy on 18th April 1923 working his way up to Chief Petty Officer Cook in April 1937, in January 1938 he joined HMS Ajax, his long service medal was issued in April of that year and was still on board during the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939. He served on Ajax through the whole of the war only leaving for a shore based position when he was commissioned in 1945. Retiring from the Royal Navy in 1948 he then took up the position of Beadle and Resident Shipkeeper to the Honourable Company of Master Mariners at Chatham Dockyard, a position he held until 1973
