BRIAN SHIELDS (BRAAQ) 1951-1997, The Football Match, signed "braaq, "Ann"‘, lower left, oil on board, 18 x 24in. (45.7 x 61cm), Brian Shields was born in Liverpool in 1951. He is best known for industrial scenes of northern Britain. In 1977 he was described by The Times as "one of the six most successful artists in England" and by The Liverpool Echo as "Liverpool’s Lowry"., A talented artist at school he gained the nickname Braque after the French artist George Braque. However, a mis-spelling then transformed Braque to Braaq. In memory of his sister Ann who died at the age of 21, all his subsequent work was signed with his name and that of his sister., He exhibited work throughout London’s West End from the mid-1970s.

Three 9ct gold Liverpool sporting medals to include a Mersey District Challenge Cup medal with a central cross design and green and blue enamel, engraved to the back 'Winners 1922-1923 W.E. Hall Liverpool Trams A.F.C', a Liverpool Centre with blue enameled detail, engraved to the back '1/4 Mile Championship 1923 Second Prize' plus a Liverpool County Football Association medal with embossed detail, to the back 'Twenty One Years Service C.S. Pimbley 1946-1967'. All three medals are in good condition. They all have slight surface scratches, and some are rubbed and a little discoloured. The detail of the embossed and engraved decoration is all still intact on all the medals. The 'Mersey District Challenge Cup' medal and the 'Liverpool County Football Association' medal were both made by Vaughtons of Birmingham. The hallmarks on all three are legible.
