‡A 16 BORE FLINTLOCK EAST INDIA COMPANY SHORT CAVALRY PISTOL BY T.MORTIMER, DATED 1802 of regulation type, with signed dated barrel engraved with the East India Company 'bale' mark, struck with London view and proof marks and the inspector's mark of William Brooks, signed dated lock with Inspector's mark of Richard Duce, regulation stock with East India mark, and brass mounts (later ramrod) 23.4 cm; 9 1/4 in barrel The brothers Thomas and Harvey Walklate Mortimer apparently held individual contracts with the East India Company with different remuneration: during the year this pistol was made the maker of this pistol received £1,550 while his brother received £2,225. See Munson 1992, p. 290. This is apparently the only East India Company firearm that is specifically marked by Thomas Mortimer.
