Lot 432

19th century British Martini-Henry 577/450 military rifle by George Gibbs of Bristol. George Gibbs was a well known gunmaker and this rifle would have been either privately made to military pattern for an individual or more likely as a private order of rifles for a Volunteer Company. The fact that it has been armourer deactivated to drill purposes suggests the latter. Rifles in military use that became worn-out unfit for service use were rendered incapable of firing by cutting a slot in the barrel and the breech and removing the firing pin and driving-in a metal pin from the rear. They would then be used for drill purposes and often acquired by cadets or boys’ clubs. This is a clean and tidy example in condition commensurate with age and use. Apart from the de-activation the underlever cocking mechanism is faulty and it will not cock and dry-fire. An interesting firearm for the military collector. Obsolete calibre and antique.

Lot 458

19th century percussion pistol of Indian origin with chased flared barrel and plain brass butt cap. 16” overall 10” barrel. Originally all or partly a European firearm it has been modified by local craftsmen on the Indian continent to the Indian style. The original barrel has been flared out to 1 1/16“ from approx. 2 ½” from the muzzle and chased basic floral decoration added to the breech section. The lock is very stiff but complete and working to some extent but the percussion nipple is damaged probably from dry firing. Wood to metal fit is poor with some damage to wood which is to a dark patination and may have been more recently varnished. Barrel is pinned to wood with one pin approx. 3 ½” from the muzzle. There is no provision for a ramrod, as often the case with Indian pistols, as this tended to be carried separately on a lanyard. An inlet decorative escutcheon is missing from the top of the butt and may have been removed for silver content. A clean and complete example. Antique.

KOSEI: A FINE TOKYO SCHOOL IVORY OKIMONO OF A HUNTER HOLDING A HAREBy Kosei, signed Kosei and kakihanJapan, Tokyo, Meiji period (1868-1912)Naturalistically carved, the elderly hunter proudly holding a rabbit by the ears which hangs tensely with its legs drawn up. A matchlock rifle (tanegashima) carved with a long barrel and thick stock is visible behind, slung over the hunter's back and resting in a woven holster. The hunter clothed in thick robes with his powder bag suspended from his belt with a reishi-head netsuke. Signed to the base KOSEI and with the artist's kakihan utilizing the natural nerve channel plug.HEIGHT 27.2 cmCondition: Good condition with minor wear, natural age cracks, the rifle end restored. Provenance: From a private collection in Belgium, published in the commissioned private catalogue 'The Nibajama collection' no. 48.Tanegashima, most often called hinawaju ('matchlock gun') in Japanese and sometimes in English, was a type of matchlock-configured arquebus firearm introduced to Japan through the Portuguese Empire in 1543. Tanegashima were used by the samurai class and their ashigaru 'foot soldiers', and within a few years, the introduction of the tanegashima in battle changed the way war was fought in Japan forever. After Tokugawa Ieyasu destroyed the Toyotomi clan in the siege of Osaka and established the Tokugawa shogunate, the relatively peaceful Edo period arrived, and the use of tanegashima declined. Isolation did not eliminate the production of guns in Japan—on the contrary, there is evidence of around 200 gunsmiths in Japan by the end of the Edo period. However, the social life of firearms had changed: as the historian David L. Howell has argued, for many in Japanese society, the gun had become less a weapon, but rather a farm implement for scaring off animals. With no external enemies for over 200 years, tanegashima were mainly used by samurai for hunting and target practice, the majority were relegated to the arms store houses of the daimyo.Auction comparison:Compare a closely related Tokyo school ivory okimono of a hunter holding a monkey in a similar pose, signed Kozan, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 17 May 2012, London, lot 174 (sold for GBP 7,500).Trade Certificate: The trade certificate for the sale of this lot within the EU has been granted (permit number 2022/BE04319/CE).
