Hon. Sydney Buxton MP, The Postmaster General; Frederick Oliver Robinson, 2nd Marquess of Ripon ('Men of the Day. No. 460.'); and John Lumley-Savile, 2nd Baron Savile ('Men of the Day. No. 1114. "Rufford Abbey."').1. A full-length portrayal of a man holding a fishing rod stands confidently by a riverside in country sporting attire.2. An individual dressed in outdoor shooting clothes, poised with a firearm.3. A gentleman in traditional hunting attire, holding a gun and exuding composure. These prints are housed in matching wooden frames with dark brown finishes and gilded inner borders, complemented by cream mounts. Bearing Spy's signature, they demonstrate the distinctive style of Vanity Fair's "Men of the Day" series, capturing prominent Victorian or Edwardian personalities. The frames measure approximately 40–50 cm in height and 30–40 cm in width, making this collection valuable for both its historical context and artistic merit.

The two top sbs barrels are at 16b and the bottom barrel lying neatly between those above which would have originally been a rifled barrel has at some time been converted to .410” shotgun and the gun is presently held on a shotgun certificate. A single leaf flip-up rifle open rear sight is fitted to the raised top rib on a wedged base for lateral adjustment with a wedged blade fore-sight. The maker’s name F v Dreyse, Sommerda is inlaid in gold lettering on the top rib. PLEASE NOTE LEGAL DISCLAIMER FOLLOWING THIS DESCRIPTION. An unusual and collectible cased Charles Lancaster double barrel hammer breech-loading shotgun in 28bore No. 3417 at overall length 45” with 30½” barrels. Its number indicates that this gun was originally made circa 1861/62 by Charles Lancaster as a patent smooth bored rotary underlever double rifles utilising his patent “oval bore non fouling rifling” in 41bore (.480”)and has been converted subsequently to a shotgun. It has nicely patterned fine twist barrels to a smooth brown patination with 2½” chambers and some choke to both. There is some pitting to both barrels Original London proof marks visible with Lancaster own “CL” mark and serial nos. on flats Barrels are engraved “CHARLES LANCASTER 151 NEW BOND STREET LONDON” and “PATENT SMOOTH BORED BREECH LOADING RIFLE” The slightly rounded top rib still has the filled wedged slots for lateral adjustment of the original rifle rear and fore-sights but a shotgun bead foresight appears to have been fitted on conversion and which is missing. Locks are back-action non-rebounding with slightly offset long “rabbit eared” hammers having ½ and full cock positions and external sliding stalking safeties and double triggers. The “ears” of both hammers have both broken off possibly due to effect of leverage on their length and/or accidentally forcing them against the safety. The r/h hammer shows an old brazed repair and the broken l/h ear which is more recent is with the gun. Opening is by an interesting version of Jones type rotary underlever which operates through a cam to slide the barrels forward approx. 1/8” on initial opening to clear the firing pins. Locks, rounded standing breech and fences profusely engraved with foliate scrollwork and locks marked “CHARLES LANCASTER’S PATENT” It appears that there may be a No. “1” amongst the decoration on the top strap but there is no evidence of a second gun and it is in a purpose-made single case of original design. Wood appears walnut to a dark brown patination with crisp chequering at the wrist and fore-end and butt is fitted with chequered metal butt plate. The gun is contained in what is reputed to be its original wood and brass case green beize lined with various compartments for accessories non of which remain. A complete Charles Lancaster trade label with some signs of wear and slight damage to one corner is attached inside the lid. In need of careful restoration but a really interesting piece of history as a project. Whilst the original rifle would now be in an obsolete calibre the shotgun conversion is a S2 firearm and BUYER MUST BE A RFD OR HOLD A CURRENT VALID SHOTGUN CERTIFICATE. An Antique Indian style flintlock short gun with flared iron barrel 25” overall 11½” barrel. Round barrel with gentle flare to approx. 1” at muzzle and fluted along must of its’ length with raised decoration at breech and Barrel has significant corrosion internally and externally with signs of some external etched decoration. Barrel tang at breech has been either broken or deliberately shortened. Brass barrel band and iron trigger guard with significant corrosion. Cock, pan, frizzen and spring all present. Trigger is loose and lock is not functioning and internal components may be broken/missing It has external decoration of an Indian style and may have been adapted from another firearm. Full stocked in plain wood with butt end made from differently grained and coloured laminated sections to shape an Indian style stock and probably adapted from conventional European woodwork from another firearm. Wood/metal fit is poor and the gun has almost certainly been made-up with an amalgamation of parts originating from an Indian workshop. Poor condition overall but an interesting decorative piece. BUYER MUST BE OVER 18.
Long antique Indian matchlock jezail musket at 68” overall and 48” barrel at approx. .500” bore. Smooth plain bright metal barrel which has been varnished at some time, smooth bored and slightly flared at the muzzle and stamped “JPR EXR 24119” at breech although the numbers are indistinct which indicates that it was at some time lodged in the Jaipur Armoury. Simple fixed iron rear-sight and bead fore-sight. Fully stocked in a plain dark straight grained wood (probably ironwood) which has a short split at the muzzle end and broken sliver at the breech with typical North Indian straight narrow butt which is stamped with “4119” Barrel secured to wood by six plain copper bands and a ramrod is present. Plain and very simple lock in working order. The plain and practical construction suggests a firearm intended for use rather than the ceremonial or decorative purpose of some more profusely decorated examples. Long barrel and small bore made these guns a very effective weapon in the hands of North Indian tribesmen, especially fired from ambush or concealment, and despite their antiquated appearance were still found in use until the beginning of the 20th century. An example of Kipling’s deadly “ten rupee jezail” for the collector.

Greener Frederic Greener (1872 - 1949) Frederic Greener was the youngest of W W Greener's sons to become involved with gunmaking. Like his elder brother William Oliver he was not really interested in guns; but like his brothers before him he completed his apprenticeship in the factory and worked alongside the other craftsmen. One of Fred's passions was chemistry and he spent many years blacking and browning gun barrels to obtain the very fine figures in damascus barrels and the deep blue-black sheen of properly blacked steel barrels. He became an accomplished chemist and during a varied career he invented synthetic 'Rosin' a resin which was cast into egg shaped pieces and used on the bows of violins. This was as a result of another of his interests - he was an accomplished musician. Like his brother Harry he was also an inventor and patented several inventions relating to guns. His first was for an adaptor for miniature rifle ammunition 1904 and this was followed by two more patents in 1905 the first for a safety device and the second for the 'Nomisguard'. This device slid over the end of the barrels of a double gun to provide protection from hot barrels during rapid shooting. It had two 'ears' one on either side of each barrel designed to concentrate the shooter's aim for bird shooting. In 1907 he invented an offset barrel conversion which enabled rim fire ammunition to be used in a centre fire rifle. His last invention involving guns came in 1909 for a folding rear sight for rifles. Fred was a keen shot and represented his country on several occasions. In W W Greener's book The British Miniature Rifle published in 1908 there is a picture showing the target with ten shots made by Fred Greener at the International match between England and Australia in 1907. Fred also won the Daily Mirror Championship Cup in 1907 - both matches were won with W W Greener rifles of course! In the early 1890s cycling became very fashionable and Fred became a keen cyclist so his father eventually set him up with his own bicycle business. This was carried on in Edmund Street quite near to the W W Greener factory so that Fred could take advantage of the various machines and workshops to make the parts required for bicycle manufacture. Fred did not make bicycles for very long and soon returned St Mary's Row to work for his father again. He continued at the factory for many years being associated with the various improvements to rifles and rifle sights working closely with Harry Greener on these inventions. He died in 1949 after a short illness. This Snider target rifle originally belonged to Fred and although it was not made in the Greener factory it was chequered by Fred and used by him in target shooting competitions. Section 58 (2) Antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence. Buyer must be over the age of 18, age verification will be required if the lot is to be posted out. 139cm long The rifle is in excellent general condition. The metal finish is good and largely still all present, starting to fade in small areas. The cleaning rod is possibly a replacement as it carries an engraved military unit mark which you wouldn't expect to see on a privately owned firearm.
