1980 Ford Escort RS2000 Transmission: manualMileage:48419The squarer-styled Escort Mk. II version appeared in January 1975 with the first production models having rolled off the production lines on 2nd December 1974. Unlike the first Escort (which was developed by Ford of Britain), the second generation was developed jointly between the UK and Ford of Germany. Codenamed 'Brenda' during its development, it had the same mechanical configuration as the Mk. I Escort. The estate and van versions used the same panelwork as the Mk. I but with the Mk. II front end and interior. The car used a revised underbody which had in fact been introduced as a running change during the last six months of the life of the Mk. I. The car was a success with just four body styles by competing in many different market niches where rival manufacturers had multiple models. The 'L' and 'GL' models were in the mainstream purchased by the private sector, the 'Sport', 'RS Mexico' and 'RS2000' in the performance market; the 'Ghia' for an untapped small car luxury sector and 'base' models for the fleet market. During the second half of the 1970s, the Escort continued to prove hugely popular with buyers in Britain. Production, after an incredibly popular model run, ended in Britain in August 1980 with other countries following soon after. This absolutely superb example of this highly sought-after British classic is presented in Salmon Pink (Signal Red 80) with chocolate brown cloth interior. We are informed by the vendor that the mileage is genuine at 48,000 and he is the fourth keeper from new. This car was on show in a Vauxhall dealership showroom for 19 years and recommissioned in 2016. The car has never been welded and all panels are original. It sits on correctly refurbished four-spoke RS alloys and new Pirelli CN36 tyres (including spare), original style steel exhaust system fitted and in the last six months, he has replaced a faulty lamination ignition with a new old stock lamination ignition system. The car has a new battery, three year ceramic coating treatment and its only been run on Esso synergy fuel (less ethanol) and runs beautifully we are told. The glass sunroof was replaced with a full length and fully restored Webasto sunroof and the vinyl roof covering was also renewed, as was its headliner. The original four-speed gearbox has been changed/upgraded to a fully rebuilt 2.8 type five-speed, correctly adapted and fitted with the same gear ratios as standard but plus fifth! A GS classics quick shift and cross member also fitted to fit the RS tunnel with no cutting. This Escort wants for nothing and is in fabulous condition. A rare Ford which is fast gaining pace in the collector's eye!
