"CARLONE GIOVANNI BATTISTA (1603-1684) Monaca in adorazione del CrocifissoOlio su tela  cm 220 x 145Firmato 'BERN:VS CARBONUS/CONF.ES (?) 1666'  La grande tela è eccezionalmente firmata e datata (fig. 1) e aggiunge dunque un importante tassello cronologico al corpus dei dipinti di Giovanni Bernardo Carbone  più noto per i ritratti  ma assai apprezzato anche per i soggetti sacri. Le dimensioni della tela suggeriscono di interpretarla come pala destinata a un altare  sia esso all'interno di una cappella di un palazzo o castello  di una chiesa o di un convento. Per ciò che concerne l'interpretazione iconografica si deve rilevare che la mancanza dell'aureola sulla figura femminile porterebbe a escludere che si tratti di una santa. Non paiono infatti potersi collegare a nessuna figura neanche gli attributi: il grande Crocifisso  il libro con il titolo indicato a chiare lettere sul dorso  un piccolo libro d'ore appoggiato sopra e  sempre nello stesso bellissimo inserto di natura morta  il pettine di ferro strumento del martirio (fig. 2). Nel loro insieme gli oggetti parrebbero alludere ai doveri della vita monacale: la preghiera  la lettura e lo studio dei testi sacri e il sacrificio  per una completa offerta di sé stessi a Gesù.Proprio per la ben nota fama del pittore come ritrattista  non è infatti da escludersi che il dipinto sia in realtà un vero e proprio ritratto di una giovane di casa fattasi suora  visto anche che i tratti fisionomici sono descritti con cura e con la capacità di trasmettere anche la dolcezza della ragazza (fig. 3). Potrebbe trattarsi della figlia del committente  che la famiglia vuole ricordare  magari come exemplum  per la scelta della vita monacale  tanto consueta allora quanto sentita  specie in alcune famiglie particolarmente religiose tra quelle del Patriziato genovese. Il volto  meravigliosamente tratteggiato dal pennello capace del Carbone parrebbe confermare la ragionevolezza di questa ipotesi.Anche la Lanterna sullo sfondo  e cioè l'inserimento del celebre simbolo di Genova  pare un elemento di personalizzazione dell'immagine  quasi nel rispetto di quel senso di appartenenza e identificazione con la città  così sentito dall'aristocrazia genovese. L'opera è inoltre di grande importanza per la presenza della data (1666)  oltre che della firma. Il settimo decennio del secolo  entro cui cade la sua esecuzione  è notoriamente quello che contiene 'il nucleo più compatto' delle opere di Carbone (D. Sanguineti  Giovanni Bernardo Carbone  Soncino 2007  p. 23) e cade al ritorno da un proficuo viaggio di studio a Venezia alla fine del decennio precedente. È il momento in cui si registra 'una felicissima fascinazione cromatica' e un realismo già notato anche dalle fonti (F. Alizeri) che possiamo apprezzare anche in questo inedito  soprattutto se lo immaginiamo pulito e ripristinato nei suoi valori timbrici con un auspicabile restauro. Il primo biografo del pittore  Carlo Giuseppe Ratti (1769) è particolarmente stringato nel tracciarne il profilo e la descrizione delle opere esposte al pubblico è davvero succinta e non consente  al momento  di indicare l'originaria provenienza di questa tela.Fig. 1.  La firma e la data.
