Rowley, R.N.' and Gieves brass shield cartouche to the lid, the items belonged to Captain Henry Aubrey Rowley R.N., born in 1896, Henry Rowley joined the Royal Navy in 1909 at 13 years of age, he served throughout the First World War and fought at the Battle of Jutland in HMS Iron Duke, he then served on the minesweeper HMS Moon and finished the war on the Light Cruiser HMS Comus, being promoted Lieutenant in January 1918, he went on to be promoted Lieutenant Commander in 1926, Commander in 1931, and Captain in 1937, in December 1939 he took command of the Cruiser HMS Calypso, on 12th June 1940 Calypso was torpedoed and sunk by the Italian Submarine Alpino Bagnolini 50 miles South of Cape Lithion in Crete, in July 1940 Rowley was given command of the Cruiser HMS Gloucester and on 29th March 1941 fought with the 7th Cruiser Squadron at the Battle of Cape Matapan against the Italian Fleet, on 22nd May 1941 during the Battle of Crete, HMS Gloucester was attacked by German dive bombers of Stukageschwader 2 and hit by several bombs eventually sinking, of the 807 men on board only 85 survived to be picked up by the Germans, sadly, Captain Rowley was killed in action, he was later posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his service at the Battle of Cape Matapan and Mentioned in Despatches for the Battle of Crete, the citation, hand written on his Service Record reads, 'Awarded DSO, Captain Rowley was in command of HMS Gloucester at the Battle of Cape Matapan on 29th March 1941. By reason of the ships position relative to the smokescreen, HMS Gloucester bore the brunt of the fire from a Littoria class Battleship for some twenty minutes. He handled his ship throughout with coolness and good judgement and transmitted valuable reports. This is more commendable as considerable doubt existed as to Gloucesters ability to maintain high speed owing to a defective bearing which materialised two days before and had been rectified by ships staff the previous day and must have been the cause of great anxiety. Mentioned in Despatches for outstanding courage, fortitude and resolution in the Battle of Crete.', Captain Rowley is buried at the Alexandria Hadra War Cemetery in Egypt, the lot also includes an original photograph of this fine Naval Officer in full dress uniform as a Commander, wearing WW1 service medals, the items come direct from family
