Roche is comparatively cheap because at each visit he gives you enough of his drugged sugar to last you for more than a fortnight; and he sometimes cures you ..." With the original envelope, addressed in Shaw's holograph. Ottoline's health had been frail since her operation for necrosis of the jaw in 1928. She placed great faith in Dr. A. J. Railway Wooden Police Truncheon, London & Brighton Railway. A quite magnificent item of considerable rarity. Almost 19" in length, it bears the large, Victoria Crown emblem at the top with 'LBR' in large, script lettering beneath. At the bottom of the shaft is the word 'Constable' within a wreath. The base of the handle has a small painted '69'. The usual LBR Truncheons have the crest and company name in full; this example is considerably scarcer than those. The London & Brighton Railway was opened between Norwood Junction and Brighton in May 1840 and amalgamated with the London & Croydon Railway to form the LBSCR in July 1846. Therefore, this Truncheon is easy to date as 1840-46. Extremely good condition throughout.
