Keith Vaughan (British, 1912-1977) The Kiss, 1943 studio stamp (lower right) pencil on paper 11cm x 14cm, unframed. Provenance: from the Keith Vaughan sketchbook, 1943; Professor John Ball; Private Collection. Keith Vaughan (1912-1977) - Lots 710 to 715 - From the Artist's Sketchbook, 1943 During the war, as a conscientious objector, Keith Vaughan served in the Pioneer Corps and during this period he was influenced by the romantic landscape tradition and particularly Graham Sutherland. Although there is a debt to be played to Sutherland in these compositions in terms of technique, by this point in his career Vaughan had created his own unique vision and artistic standpoint and these drawings record points in his life during the war. The Kiss is important for Vaughan, as it features both a man and a women entwined as its central focus point, an unusual motif as female figures were rare in his artistic oeuvre and it relates to the gouache sold in these rooms in December 2014. '... lovers, locked in each other, a single bipolar entity, oblivious to the outside, reaffirming each his existence in the other. And the threat of parting never far away' (Keith Vaughan to John Lehmann, undated letter from NCC Ward Barracks, Bulford, Wilts, quoted in Malcolm Yorke, Keith Vaughan: His Life and Work, Constable, London, 1990, p.97).
Martin Rico y Ortega (Spanish, 1833-1908), "Picnic", oil on wood panel, signed "Rico" lower right, "M. Knoedler & Co." label en verso, 11 1/2 in. x 6 1/2 in., framed. Note: Martin Rico Y Ortega was born in 1833 in Madrid during a time of civil unrest. It is perhaps because of the conflict in Spain and resulting lingering effects that Rico felt drawn towards Paris and, later, Venice to establish himself as a painter. At the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, he studied under Jenaro Pérez Villaamil, who himself was highly influenced by the works of English artists such as John Constable. As a result, Rico became quite accomplished at rendering the interplay of light, shadows, sky and clouds. In 1860, he was able to further his artistic studies in Paris, where he became acquainted with Barbizon painters like Charles-Francois Daubigny. Rico’s works certainly reflect the plein-air approach of the Barbizon school, while also including the detailed representation of everyday minutia in the style of the Realists. Later in life, Rico would often return to his native Spain. He would spend time exploring the scenes of once Moorish areas and committing them to canvas. In the painting offered here, Rico captures a picnic outside the walls of an impressive villa. His realistic depiction of the ornate building in the background as well as the shadows cast by the high sun, the attention to color and the meticulous detail are all characteristics of the skilled artist.Ref.: Whitmore, Jane. “Martin Rico y Ortega.” Rehs Galleries. www.rehsgalleries.com. After John Constable (British, 1776-1837) View of Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk oil on canvas 21 x 26½cm (8 x 10in) Other Notes: John Constable's "View of Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk" is in Tate Britain. Two old repaired tears. Old stencil - not Christie's - of PO 2501. Some craquelure and old stretcher bar marks can be seen from the front. Stamp - I have not seen this one before and there is no British colourman or partnership of colourmen I know of with those initials. Occasionally local, retail colourmen restamped canvases they had bought from larger manufacturers, so I suppose it could be the stock stamp of a provincial supplier, but looks more like a (rather large) inventory number to me. I am sorry not to be able to help, but I'm not sure it is a colourman's stamp.
