Literatur: Vgl. (1370321) (11)Giovanni Antonio Canal, also known as “Canaletto”,1697 Venice – 1768 ibid., follower ofCAPRICCIO OF A PALACE LOGGIA WITH FIGURE STAFFAGE Oil on canvas. 132.2 x 93.5 cm.The painting is not actually a “capriccio” as the overall objective is too decidedly realistic for that, and the architectural details are shown with too much detail, as is typical of Canaletto´s works. Nevertheless, an imaginary architecture is possibly depicted here. From the inside of a high loggia supported by columns with a view of a park wall, it also shows the open ceiling of the loggia in a semi-arch in an unusual way. Such fantastic architectural ideas are familiar from engravings by Piranesi. The alternation of shadows in the room and a bright building standing in the sunlight gives the painting an attractive tension. One appears to feel the southern summer temperature, in which the staffage figures are all in the shade. The people on the upper gallery balustrade, from which a large veil is hanging, are highly original, as is the oval gold frame hanging diagonally in the lower room or the extremely long hanging lantern on the left of the painting. The depiction is largely identical to a work by Canaletto from 1765, titled Colonnade Opening onto the Courtyard of a Palace in Cannon Hall Museum, South Yorkshire (Part of Barnsley Museums, 56 x 42 cm). Another version (Perspective with Porticus) with smaller dimensions (42 x 32.5) is held at the Carmen Thyssen Collection (Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, inv. no. CTB 1981.39), there with varying details of a more detailed figure staffage including a beggar, a man with a child and chickens in the loggia. The park wall is also depicted differently, surmounted by figures instead of a vase. Another illustration by Stephen Ongpin, Fine Art, is known, executed in gouache and pen, with the inscription “Anto. Canale” (36.4 x 28.7 cm), exhibited for the first time in 1919 in the Petit Palais, Paris, formerly Coll. Luigi Albertini, Rome, together with the accompanying oil painting. Canaletto, long known in Europe, was admitted to the Venetian Academy founded in 1750 on 11 September 1763, and he had to submit a model example of his skills, which is now held at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Venice. The subject of the painting, of which there are several versions and whose depiction also inspired Guardi to create one of his paintings, was created in 1765, i.e. at the same time that Canaletto was again turning to subjects from his hometown. Thus, the present painting aligns with the already known versions, in part also created by the workshop, which largely show differences in detail.

Andreas Schelfhout (Dutch, 1787-1870) A winter landscape at sunset with windmills and skaters signed lower left 'A. Schelfhout' oil on canvas 51 x 66cm Provenance: Recorded in an inventory of items belonging to the present vendor's family in 1888, Thence by descent Schelfhout was a principal figure of the Romantic movement in Holland and the idyllic atmosphere of the present picture demonstrates why he became known as the ‘Claude Lorrain of winter scenes’.Despite this idealism and lack of topographical accuracy, the artist’s compositions were formulated from various individual elements that he’d directly observed from nature. Indeed, Schelfhout was a great advocate of en plein air sketching and travelled to England in 1835 to study the work of John Constable. This, combined with his great technical skill, meant that Schelfhout’s work retained a fidelity to nature reminiscent of the great Dutch Golden Age masters who likewise influenced him.The artist himself was hugely influential, teaching and inspiring the next generation of Dutch landscapists such as Charles Leickert and Johan-Barthold Jongkind. The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. The canvas is in a good condition overall with good tension and no undulations. The paint layers have been well preserved and delicate areas of impasto are still crisp. There are localised areas of overpaint, finely applied and well matched, mainly covering stress and age cracks in the sky as well as a few localised areas in the foreground. The varnish is clear, even and glossy.

A QUEEN ANNE WALNUT EIGHT-DAY LONGCASE CLOCKGEORGE WENTWORTH, OXFORD, CIRCA 1715The four finned pillar rack and bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by seconds pendulum, the 12 inch square brass dial with calendar dial and subsidiary seconds dial to the matted centre, within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with fleur-de-lys half hour markers, Arabic five minutes beyond the outer minute track and signed George Wentworth, Oxon, to lower margin, with scroll-pierced blued steel hands and female mask and scroll cast spandrels within a herringbone engraved outer border, the case with ogee moulded cornice and plain frieze over glazed dial aperture to the hinged front applied with three-quarter columns to the front angles, the sides with rectangular glazed apertures and conforming quarter columns set against bargeboards at the rear continuing up past the frieze to meet the underside of the cornice, the trunk with concave throat moulding over 42 inch rectangular quarter-veneered door with herringbone banded border and caddy edge moulding, the rectangular plinth base with cavetto upper moulding over herringbone bordered book-match veneered panel within crossbanded surround, on cross-grain moulded skirt.223.5cm (88ins) high, 52cm (20.5ins) wide, 28cm (11ins) deep. George Wentworth of Oxford is recorded in Loomes, Brian Clockmakers of Britain 1286-1700 as baptised at St. Thomas's in Salisbury in 1690 the youngest son of the well-known Salisbury clockmaker Thomas Wentworth senior. He was apprenticed through the Clockmakers' Company to John Knibb of Oxford in 1706 gaining his freedom the same year he married in Dinah Mose 1713. In addition to being a clockmaker George Wentworth was also a goldsmith who served as constable for a year in 1715, then Councillor in 1719 and Mayor's Chamberlain in 1727. In 1730 he repaired the Christ Church Cathedral clock and purchased a property there in 1738. He was appointed senior Bailiff that year and was the Fairmaster from 1740-43. He died in 1746/7. Condition Report: Movement is in relatively clean working condition with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. There is some historic rebushing and light hammering around one of the movement pillar fixing points on the backplate, and a gentle clean/service is advised if intending to put into long term service. The dial is in fine condition with only slight oxidation to the silvering; hands appear original and undamaged. The movement rests on what appears to the original seatboard at the correct level in the case with no visible evidence of adjustments to the cheek uprights of the case. With this in mind we are of the opinion that the movement and dial are original to the case. The case is generally in good original condition. The slips applied to the rear of the quarter columns of the hood are later additions and there is some slight bowing to the sides and movement to the trunk door surround. The left-hand hood glass is broken. Faults to the case are otherwise limited to historic scuffing, shrinkage and a few localised veneer repairs and some variance within the colour (most noticeably towards the lower part of the base).Clock is complete with pendulum, two weights, case key and winder. Condition Report Disclaimer
