He wrote extensively on the graphic arts. Among a dozen or more of his books are: Printed Ephemera, Anatomy of Printing and monographs on the artists William Heath Robinson, Rowland Hilder and John Nash. Griselda Lewis (1918-2014) was a writer, designer and ceramics collector. SLIM WILLIAM: (1891-1970) British Field Marshal of World War II. A.L.S., Slim, two pages, 4to, Windsor Castle, 6th March 1967, to Mr. Flinton, on the printed stationery of the Governor's Office. Slim thanks his correspondent for their invitation to an annual dinner although regrets that he can not attend as he already has an official engagement on the same evening. He continues 'I well remember visiting the Maroondah Dam. I can still spot a Guards tie and even without one I think I can recognise the way an ex-guardsman stands and carries himself whatever he is wearing'. A minor paperclip rust stain to the upper left corner and a couple of minor, light stains to the lower edge of the first page, none of which affect the text or signature, otherwise VG Slim served as Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle from 1964-70.
Sword: A good Scottish Cross Hilt sword George V (1910-30) by J.R. GAUNT & SON Ltd. Late Edward Thurkle London & Birmingham. Square ricasso, double fullered broadsword blade 33" well etched with thistle decoration. Wirebound fishskin hilt with bun pommel (pommel unscrews so that a basket hilt can be substituted. Straight crossguard with ball finials. In its leather scabbard with frog loop. (Some losses to leather near the chape which is missing). This sword was the property of Chief Constable Sir William Booth Rennie Morren (see also his medals in this sale)
Sword: An interesting Göteborgs Police sidearm. Brass stirrup guard backstrap engraved 'GOTEBORGS POLISDISTRIKT'. Fiskskin grip (some wear) secured by two rivets. Blade 25" marked 'IMPORT' and has the squirrel logo of Carl Erickorn (1865-1976 Sword makers). Unfullered with some rust patches. With a gold bullion TRODDEL. Good condition overall. Entitled to the CBE (1943). Chief Constable of Edinburgh from 1935, ARP Controller Edinburgh 1940-45. Born Aberdeen 1890. Appointed Deputy Lord High Constable of Scotland during Royal State Visit 1953. King Haakon VII Liberty Cross of Norway 1947, entitled to Swedish Police Sports Assoc Gold Medal of Honour 1952. Lot also includes a 9ct Gold Royal Scots fob, and a silver miniature hat with photo. With a folder of original WW1 photos, WW1 Commission Scroll, etc. Superb lot which needs viewing (See also his and his father's miniature groups in this sale).

Circle of John Constable (British, 1776-1837) Study of a rustic woman, a cow grazing beyond pencil 9½ x 5cm (4 x 2in) Provenance: William Darby, and shown at Jocelyn Fielding's gallery in New Bond Street, London, in 1972. Exhibited: William Darby, 46 Chiddingstone Street, London, SW6, Exhibition of Drawings by John Constable, RA, May, 1972, No. 20 - Study of a rustic woman, a cow grazing beyond. The present drawing is included in the important exhibition (and catalogue ) of Constable's s drawings assembled by William Darby, and shown at Jocelyn Fielding's gallery in New Bond Street, London, in 1972. It was number 20 in that exhibition. Under glass and looks to be stuck down. Some discolouration.

AFTER JOHN CONSTABLE "The Rainbow, Salisbury", black and white engraving by David Lucas, in maple frame and LICIDIO LOPEZ "The cattle drive", acrylic on canvas, signed bottom right, inscribed and titled verso CONDITION REPORTS The rainbow print - lettering is very thin and faded / worn so very difficult to read, some of it reads "Engraved by David Lucas", "The Rain.............. Salisbury". Print date possibly reads "May 1854" although this is extremely pale and indistinct so it is difficult to be sure. Glass is broken. Picture has quite a few scuffs and scratches, nicks, and browning, some stains, discolouration, and spotting. The plate mark in the margin is quite a distance from the image itself. Size approx 81 x 66cm. The cattle drive picture is approx 48 x 39cm and has wear, dirt and scuffs, and some losses to paint.
