A French Literary Narrative Pastoral Tapestry, after Crispin II de Passe, the Younger, early 17th century, from a contemporary Pastoral Romance, woven with a central figure of a shepherd seated under an oak tree, playing his pipes in attendance of his sheep, with further couples in the background and a figure crossing the bridge having come from the distant village, with foreground figure of a female playing a form of clarinet, with sheep drinking from a well, with foreground flowers, with inscriptions within the main field, SILVAIN, and SELVAGE, the top of the tapestry which now extends over the frame on which it is mounted (illustrated) is a border section woven with a central cartouche containing a female figure, and flanked by cornucopia and small birds, all within a stylised frame pattern border,. (visible on front of frame) 249cm. high, 170cm. wide; 8ft. 2in., 5ft. 7in.; (section over top of frame) 53cm. high; 1ft. 9in.; (section under bottom of frame: 14cm. high; 5in.
