Thirteen-keyed blackwood Sax type clarinet in B= by (Antoine Joseph) called Adolphe Sax, Paris, circa 1855, nickel-silver mounts, nickel-silver cup keyed, integral upper joint and barrel mouthpiece absent, length (without mouthpiece) 22 7/8", 58cm, wooden case Stamped Adolphe Sax on the upper joint and with the A.S. monogram on the lower joint *This instrument is one of only seven soprano clarinets of normal format that are recorded (see The Galpin Society website List of surviving Adolphe Sax instruments). An eighth experimental clarinet by Sax is described by Beryl Kenyon de Pasqual in the Galpin Society Journal, XLII. The current instrument is referred to in a paper "Extant Soprano Clarinets by Adolphe Sax" given by Thomas Reil and published in Proceedings of the Clarinet and Woodwind Colloquium 2007 celebrating the Collection of Sir Nicholas Shackleton (Ed. Arnold Myers), pp. 105-106.
