A set of Hindoo circular playing cards, early 20th c., 120 cards (complete), hand-painted and varnished on paper, comprising ten suits, each containing ten pip cards and two court cards, one scored with sl. loss to colour, diameter 77 mm (3 ins), contained in orig. wooden box with sliding lid (lid loose in rebate), hand-painted with a figure on each side, 97 x 97 x 97 mm (3.75 x 3.75 x 3.75 ins) See Hargrave, A History of Playing Cards, pp.24-27. The ten suits picture emblems of the ten avatars of Vishnu: fish, tortoise, boar, lion, water jar, axe, bow and arrow, thunderbolt, shell and sword. The chief court card of each suit shows some incident connected with that particular incarnation. (1)

A GERMAN ETCHED AND GILT STATE HALBERD OF THE GUARD OF LUDWIG RUDOLPH, DUKE OF BRUNSWICK AND LÜNEBURG IN BLANKENBURG AND WOLFENBÜTTEL (1671-1735), DATED 1717. with central spike, etched with vertical arrangement of leaves rising from an etched decorative collar, large axe-blade with convex leading edge, etched with the crested mantled ducal arms supported by lions, large flat down-turned fluke etched and gilt with scrolling foliage and the centre etched with the mantled crowned ducal cypher above the date, etched tubular socket the surface ground etched in imitation of damascus pattern, on a faceted wooden haft. 56.5cm; 22 1/4in head. Provenance. Schloss Blankenburg. The significance of the date 1717 on this group of halberds remains unclear. Ludwig Rudolph received the Earldom of Blankenburg am Harz in 1707. In complete violation of the rule of primogeniture the Earldom was raised to a Principality with all the rights of an Independant Sovereign State, in the centre of which Ludwig Rudolph created a lavish Court. In 1731, following the death of his brother, August Wilhelm, Ludwig Rudolph reunited Blankenburg and Wolfenbüttel and ruled them together briefly until 1735. The present halberd would have been made for the Court at Blankenburg. A number of these were sold Sotheby`s Hanover October 2005, lots 773-777.

Four: Private J. W. H. Looker, Royal Army Ordnance Corps, late Hampshire Regiment, captured at Hunters Gap, near Beja, Tunisia, 1 March 1943 1939-45 Star; Africa Star, clasp, 1st Army; War Medal 1939-45, these unnamed; Efficiency Medal, G.VI.R., 2nd issue, Territorial (5500317 Pte., R.A.O.C.) correction to service number and unit, good very fine (4) £140-180 John William Horold Looker was born in Alresford, Hampshire, on 26 July 1920. A Builders Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the Army on 11 April 1939. Serving with the 2/4th Battalion Hampshire Regiment, he was taken prisoner at Hunters Gap, near Beja, Tunisia, on 1 March 1943. He was held in Campo 66 at Capua and Campo 53 at Macarata, Italy, and then at Stalags 7A at Mooseburg, Bavaria; 17A at Keizersteinbruck, Austria, and 17B at Krems, Austria. During 1944-45 he was in three work camps, Rust, Austria and Fells, Austria, being employed in Labouring work, and Nuehause, Austria, employed in forestry work. In the later work he was twice accidentally injured with axe cuts to his left foot and leg. In his P.O.W. papers he states that he tried to escape from Campo 53 when Italy capitulated but was almost immediately captured by the Germans. With copied P.O.W. papers.
A rare Minton Parian group of Atala and Chastas, by J Pollet, inscribed and numbered o. 251 loss to axe handle, 30cm. This group was commissioned for The Great Exhibition of 1851. The subject is from Chateaubrian`s Atala, a Christian convert who saves Chastas from his enemies but is unable to marry him due to a vow taken by her mother. She takes poison and dies. See the `Parian Phenomenon` figure 108.
An African short sword, steel blade 10 3/4 in. and of stylised form with swollen upper and barbed and pierced lower section, wire bound hilt with tubular projection to the pommel; together with an African axe, steel head with slightly serpentine edge and pierced and cut decoration, to a snakeskin covered wooden haft. * WWI Royal Flying Corps. BE2C 2092, Zeppelin Destroyer 1916. A souvenir fragment of a flying-strut removed from the aeroplane flown by 2nd Lieut. Wulstan Tempest which shot down LZ-31 piloted by Germany`s most famous Airship Commander Leutnant Heinrich Mathy on 1st day of October 1916, the fragment fashioned into the form of a small presentation `axe` of which the head is the original aluminium aerofoil-section fixture riveted to the handle of polished hardwood ash or beech of the strut, engraved and inscribed "Piece of BE2C 2092 which brought down the Zepp at Potters Bar 1st Oct. 1916 -R.F.C." and with original component stamped markings AD with indistinct numerals, 9in (22cm) length. Full reportage of the incident was widely broadcast by National & International News press (some edited copy from The Barnet Times is provided with this souvenir) giving eyewitness and graphic accounts of this exploit for which the pilot was promoted Major and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. This very same aeroplane BE2C-2092 is the exact machine credited with being the destroyer of another German airship "kill" only in the preceding month, flown by 2nd Lieut. William Leefe-Robinson who brought down the Schutte-Lanz ship SL-11, which crashed at nearby Cuffley in Hertfordshire. For this earlier success Leefe-Robinson was promoted Captain and awarded the Victoria Cross. Both pilots were flying from Hornchurch in Essex, where their squadron No. 39 was charged with Home Defence duties, and this loss of the most senior & experienced German Airship commander led to the rapid scaling-back of Zeppelin raids on Britain.
