9th-11th century AD. A hoard of silver and ceramic items comprising: a chatelaine with pendants (ear-scoop, tweezers, hammer, pelta-shaped plaque, axe-head); a group of twenty-nine small fittings and fragments; seventeen belt fittings (buckles, clips, stiffeners) and bell-shaped studs; seventeen wire hair-rings; a group of small coins and fragments including dirhems and an English short-cross penny of Ethelred II converted to a pendant with suspension loop; thirteen larger dirhem coins; twenty-eight dress fittings with pendants and earrings; six penannular hoops, two annular and a knop finial; three twisted rod arm-rings, two with curved flange finial; fourteen mainly twisted rod bracelets and fragments; twenty-one large pieces of hack-silver and ingots; forty-eight smaller ingot fragments, bars and a looped wire; twenty ingots, mainly square- and D-section; a quantity of irregular molten silver lumps; a quantity of coarse ceramic fragments (the vessel in which the hoard was stored?"). Such an axe can be seen in several scenes during the last third of the movie being wielded by the characters Grimm, Angelika and the Woodsman at different times. Two Japanese carved ivory okimonos, Meiji period (1868-1912), the first modelled as a standing man with a fan and holding a hooped staff, two boys climbing upon his shoulders, signed to base, 11¼in. (28.5cm.) high; the second of a woodsman with axe, standing upon a rocky base with flowers and foliage, a bird upon his shoulder, signed to base, 10¾in. (27.25cm.) high. (2)* Condition: - Man with fan: Some sun bleaching to ivory to the front but surface remains glossy. No damage or losses to carving.- Woodsman: Old glue residue to front and back of joint between figure and base. Small empty hole to front of left foot - possibly a small piece missing from here. Several old vertical cracks to ivory to back of figure. Front of figure has paler colour than the back due to sun fading.
A 19thC MAHOUTS SPIKE WITH GOLD DECORATION. In the shape of an Axe in Deer form, facing a Tiger all of steel construction. Lefthand thread allows the spike to be withdrawn from the hilt, tapering square form 13.3/4" long. Beaten form shaft with half moon axe blade, profusely decorated with gold Indian designs. 26" overall length.
