Afrique . This decorative 19th century map of the continent shows the colonial possessions and major tribal kingdoms. The interior is mostly void of detail, with the exception of the mythical Monts de la Lune, or Mountains of the Moon in the center of the continent. These legendary mountains were long thought to be the source for the Nile, dating back to Ptolemy. Stanley traced a fluvial connection from the Nile back to a mysterious snowy mountain range in Central Africa in 1888, dubbing the mountains Ruwenzori and proclaiming them the Nile source that Ptolemy described. The map is surrounded by steel-engraved scenes by Raimond Bonheur including the pyramids, wild animals, natives, the French army in Algeria and vignettes of Alexandria, Cairo, and Algiers. The map also includes population statistics from the major countries and French text describing the continent and the engravings surrounding the map. . Minor chipping at paper edges, with one small, unobtrusive spot in the Atlantic, but overall near fine. 17.3"" W x 11.4"" H . Levasseur, Victor . 1845

In 1815 he was sent to the American colonies as commanding general of the army of Upper Peru where he was appointed Viceroy of Peru in 1821, a post he held until 1824. The correspondence files of the Ministry for Foreign Relations includes an entry for a pair of embellished Versailles pistols from the First Consul in 1802 to Mariano Luis d`Urquijo, Spanish first minister for Foreign Affairs at the beginning of the 19th century. The d`Urquijo pair remain unknown and it has been suggested that they might be the present pair, having been later presented by the Spanish First Minister to the Viceroy of Peru. This theory is strengthened by the following entry for a number of pieces for the Ministry in the Annuaire of the Versailles Manufactory for AN X, or 1802: Ministre du Relations Extérieur Pistolets gros calibre a secret, arg. gravé riche, fr. 2.400 Nécess. acajou, pistol. arg. gravé, chaînette, roulet. damasq., fr. 1.200 Nécess. acajou, pistolets de combat, argent, cis. 1er modèle, riche, placage arg. damasq., bassinets or, fr. 3.000 Service: 2 fusils doubles forestiers A related pair of pistols, with similarly decorated barrels, trigger-guards and ramrod-pipes, are preserved in the Wallace Collection, nos. A1219 and A1220. The number of ramrod-pipes on both pairs of pistols is unusual for Boutet. The use of platinum is probably a very early modification, perhaps added at the same time as the pistols were fitted into the present case. The anti-corrosion properties of platinum were well known by 1800 and it was used to line shotgun barrels by Jean LePage circa 1819. Nicolas-Noël Boutet (1761-1833) the distinguished maker of armes de luxe inherited the position of gunmaker to Louis XIV from his father-in-law, Pierre de Sainte (active 1747-88). In 1792 he became technical Director at the new Versailles Manufactory and in 1800 rose to Directeur Artiste with overall control. He held this position until the closure of the manufactory in 1818. Boutet died fifteen years later in poverty, his career having survived six French Political regimes.

WWII Eva Braun^ wife of Adolf Hitler portrait in oils^ believed to be the State Portrait of her^ showing her head and shoulders wearing a red hat and slightly smiling^ looking to her front. Approx overall size 54x49cm^ framed. A statement by our vendor has been supplied to us: This portrait^ by Hans Lehmkuhl painted in 1941^ was in the possession of Eva Braun until 1943 when she gave it away to her (somewhat motherly) friend^ Gräfin (Countess) Antonia Isabelle Clementine von Westphalenzu Fürstenberg^ born at 02.04.1872^ deceased at 02.02.1962. The Gäfin was married to Grafen (Count) Bernhard zu Stolberg/Stolberg. Both families^ belonging to the Higher Aristocracy of Germany (Hochadel)^ had close ties to the NSDAP. Nowadays they still have an influential position in Germany. I have bought the portrait from the heir Mr Bodo von Henning auf Schonhöff. It is not the only occasion that Eva gave away a painting. She also granted a painting from Hitler (depicting two red flowers and petals) in 1940 to her friend Herta Schneider when she visited the Wasserburg Street in Munich. She also posed for the painter Bonemeyer in Bad Tolz (the return birthday gift to Hitler). The state portrait could have been made in the scope of Evas aspiration to attend meetings Adolf Hitler had with highly placed people. This painting was believed lost for more than 70 years. The painting is accompanied by a file of documents on the provenance of the painting. Hans Lehmkuhl^ painter of: Adolf Hitler^ Eva Braun^ Paul von Hindenburg^ Philip Bouhler^ Werner von Blomberg and Ludwig Quidde. Johannes Hans Ludwig Lehmkuhl (18831969)^ was a popular portrait painter of highly placed politicians and military officers. He studied from 1910 to 1914 in Munich at the Akademie der bildendenKünste. In that period he travelled with Julius Exter to Feldwies^ at the Chiemsee^ to paint landscapes (such as Stonebridge near Herrenchiemsee palace). During World War I he served as Lieutenant of the 9 Bayrischen Feld-Artillerie Regiment Landsberg^ stationed in France. In 1916 he was promoted to Oberleutnant Chef der Batterie and rewarded with the Iron Cross I. Lehmkuhl was severely wounded and stayed at a hospital in Munich for one and a half years. In 1920 he continued his studies in Munich. In 1922 in Munich he painted several German officers^ including Lieutenant Philipp Bouhler^ the later Reichsleiter^ Chief of the Chancellery of the Führer of the NSDAP and SS-Obergruppenführer (directly reporting to Adolf Hitler). In 1923 Lehmkuhl went back to Bremen and in 1927 he moved to Berlin. In 1930 he painted Ludwig Quidde^ the German Nobel Prize Winner of 1927; this painting now hangs in the Focke Museum in Bremen (Quidde never bought the painting^ because he did not have the money for it). In 1932^ Lehmkuhl was the last painter to get permission to paint the Reichspräsidenten Paul von Hindenburg. In 1936 Lehmkuhl received the order from the army leaders to paint a four-meter-high painting of Adolf Hitler. In the same year he was asked by the army leaders to paint Werner von Blomberg^ the German Generalfeldmarschall and minister of war. He not only had direct access to Philippe Bouhler^ but also to other Nazi top-leaders such as Martin Bormann^ the Private Secretary of Adolf Hitler and Head of the Party Chancellery. Magnus, Charles 1863 [Untitled - Map of United States with The Army of Liberty Song] This is an uncommon patriotic Civil War era broadside with a hand colored map of the United States in the upper half and the words to the song on the bottom. This does not appear to be a page from a publication but was a separately issued handout for the soldiers. A vignette of General Washington conducting a battle is super-imposed over the mid-section of the map. The map shows Washington Territory in its inverted ""L"" configuration extending around Oregon into today`s Idaho. Shows the newly formed Nevada, and the Dakota Territory stretches between the Mississippi river and the Rocky Mountains. The patriotic song, titled ""I`m glad I`m in this Army,"" which begins ""Come rally for our country,"" was obviously published to inspire the Union solider. No attribution, city, date or printer noted on this rare, unfolded broadside but OCLC indicates it was published by Charles Magnus. 4.8"" W x 7.4"" H Overall very good with just a hint of offsetting and pleasant even-age toning.
