Lot 18

Flintlock musketoon with possible Tipu Sultan connection. Flintlock musketoon with possible Tipu Sultan connection, 30inch octagonal to round barrel with fine brass inlaid decoration and flaring blunderbuss muzzle, crowned GR lock stamped Tower, chequered stock with later added Indian decorative carving. The musketoon is adorned with period applied Indian form inlaid geometric and foliate designs to the barrel. The wood is also period carved with a foliate design featuring red coloured flowers on stems with leaves. This design matches that found on an embroidered arrow quiver which was part of ‘the Tipu Sultan collection’ sold at 'Bonhams Islamic and Indian Art Sale' held on 21st April 2015. This carving possibly indicates capture by Tipu Sultan’s forces for use against the EIC.Tipu, the “Tiger of Mysore” was the last king of Mysore. He was the East India Company’s most tenacious enemy, inflicting numerous defeats on the British, partly through his development of military rockets, before his death at Seringapatam in 1799 when he was defeated by the British Army, led by Major General David Baird. Tipu once said: “I would rather live one day as a tiger than a lifetime as a sheep”. When the British under Baird’s leadership finally captured Tipu’s capital city, the conquerors were astonished at the jewels, arms and art objects that Tipu had collected. Baird, son of an Edinburgh merchant family, later declared Tipu dead, from a gunshot to the head and three bayonet wounds. After his death many items of Tipu Sultan’s, arms, armour & jewellery were captured and ended up in private collections of British Officer’s who took part in Tipu’s final battle. Section 58 (2) Antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence. Buyer must be over the age of 18, age verification will be required if the lot is to be posted out.115.5cm long The gun has a dark worn overall patina. The action works correctly with a strong spring. The metal work has overall pitting which is heavier in places such as the muzzle of the gun. The wood stock has numerous repairs and glued cracks, filled sections, chips dents and scratches. The stock has been covered in an overall treacle black coloured varnish probably to hide these repairs. The bolt (or side nail) which holds the lock in place and the butt plate screws have been replaced.  The brass of the side plate is a slightly different shade perhaps indicating a replacement. The buttplate could also be a replacement.

THE HEAD OF H.M.S. AGAMEMNON'S FIGUREHEAD, HELLYER WORKSHOPS, CIRCA 1852carved as a moustachioed warrior wearing a plumed peak helmet with slightly open mouth, gesso covered overall, now ebonised, the neck inscribed AGAMEMNON / 1877 -- 36 x 20in. (91.5 x 51cm.); together with a 16 x 22in. engraving from the Illustrated London News date 1.8.57 entitled H.M.S. "AGAMEMNON", 91 GUNS, SHIPPING THE ENGLISH PORTION OF THE ATLANTIC SUBMARINE CABLE AT EAST GREENWICH. with good view of the vessel, including her bust-length figurehead.(2)Agamemnon (91), a 'James Watt'-Class battleship of 5,080 tons, had the distinction of being the first purpose-built auxiliary warship for the Royal Navy. Her success was such that she became the template for all RN auxiliary battleships for the decade after her launch in 1852. She served as flagship to Rear Admiral Mends in the Crimea and took part in the bombardment of Sevastopol in 1854 and the shelling of Fort Kinburn a year later. In 1857 she was fitted out to carry 1250 tons of telegraph cable for the Atlantic Telegraph Company's first attempt to lay a transatlantic telegraph cable. The first attempt was a failure, however, the next year she tried again and met her counterpart U.S.S. Niagara in mid-ocean, successfully splicing the cable ends on July 29th. Returning to Ireland with William Thompson (later Lord Kelvin) monitoring the 1,020 miles of cable, Agamemnon reached Valentia Bay on 5th August 1858 with Niagara raising Trinity Bay, Newfoundland the same day. Eleven days later Queen Victoria sent President Buchanan a ninety-nine-word message - a process that took over sixteen hours - which laid the foundation for all modern global communication thereafter. Agamemnon was paid off in 1862 and sold in 1870 -- her figurehead originally showed Agamemnon, Commander of the Greek Army at the siege of Troy in a plate-mail tunic and holding a scimitar and shield, Hellyer's charged £35/0/0 for the work.old wear and paint loss although seems to be mainly superficial and to the gesso/paint.

However, a family connection with the artist, John Pettie, encouraged him to study at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh. Hardie became known for his pictures of Scottish rural life which often have a strong narrative element. He produced portraits, landscapes and genre scenes as well as historical paintings in both oils and watercolour. His 1899 'Curling at Carsebreck' is held in the permanent collection of the National Galleries Scotland. The picture had been commissioned to mark the Diamond Jubilee of The Royal Caledonian Curling Club. The sixty-one people depicted are all individual portraits of members. Hardie exhibited his first picture at The Royal Scottish Academy in 1877 and the popularity of his work is reflected by the fact that the Academy accepted a remarkable 175 further examples. Charles Martin Hardie's work is held in the collections of The National Galleries of Scotland, Museums & Galleries Edinburgh, Abbotsford House, Highland Council, Laing Art Gallery, The National Army Museum, The National Trust, The National Trust for Scotland, McLean Museum & Art Gallery, The Royal Scottish Academy, John Muir House, Westminster College (University of Cambridge) and others. * HAMISH CONSTABLE PATERSON (SCOTTISH 1890 - 1955),CRUMPLED MAN AT LE PONT ROYALE, PARISwatercolour on paper, signed and dated 1926image size 21cm x 31cm, overall size 46cm x 56cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: The third son of the artist James Paterson, cousin of Viola Paterson and thus a member of the distinguished Scottish painting family. He was actually named James Constable Paterson but was always known as Hamish. In 1910 he began studying at Edinburgh College of Art and his talent was obvious to all. He became an officer in The Black Watch during Army service in World War I and was severely wounded. Although he eventually recovered physically, his experiences left a lasting mental mark and he suffered from "depressions" for the rest of his life. His uncle William Bell Paterson gave him a show in Bond Street (London) in 1922 which included portraits of the former Prime Minister David Lloyd George and many titled people. Hamish's talent as a portraitist was widely admired but instead of accepting lucrative commissions he chose to live in France painting landscapes. It's possible that he sought a life away from the people he knew, perhaps embarrassed by his issues. The vendor believes the crumpled figure in the foreground to be Hamish Paterson. If he's right, Paterson depicts himself as a lonely and forlorn figure with his back turned to the spectacular view and the nearby Louvre. Although his work continued to be exhibited at the RSA regularly until 1949, many of these pictures were loaned by friends, fellow artists or collectors. His pictures were also shown at the RSW, RA, Royal Glasgow Institute and was included in "The Paterson Family" at Belgrave Gallery (London) in 1977. He retained lifelong friendships with some of the Kirkcudbright group including W.O. Hutchison, Robert Sivell and Mac Fleming. It seems Hamish Paterson largely financed his life in France with the sales of his pictures there and he only returned to the family home at Moniaive (Dumfriesshire) a couple of years before his death. Hamish Paterson's war experiences had a dramatic impact on the rest of his life but his watercolours show the influences and qualities which brought his father such success and had Hamish felt able to remain in Scotland, it's likely that his reputation in his own country would have better matched his abilities and talent.

Map of the Roads of Portugal, 2nd edition, with Additions and Corrections by Lieutenant James Cruttwell 83rd. Rgt. 1832, engraved map with contemporary outline colouring, sectionalised and laid on linen, slight offsetting, edged with pale blue silk, marbled endpapers, 585 x 130 mm, contained in a contemporary marbled card slipcase with printed label to the upper cover, plus Egerton (T. publisher). A New Military Map of Portugal..., Drawn by Captn. Eliot, Rl. Artillery, 1810, engraved map with contemporary outline colouring, sectionalised and laid on linen, some dust soiling and staining, 630 x 395 mm, contained in a contemporary card slipcase with a printed label to the upper cover, worn at extremitiesQTY: (4)NOTE:The first described item is a large and detailed folding map, published during the Peninsular War. Probably because of the war, Nantiat is most exercised with the borders between Spain and Portugal, especially the passes through which it was expected that Napoleon's army might come when the campaign season started in the spring. It is probable that Faden saw an opportunity to sell this detailed and large-scale map to officers in Wellington's army in Portugal, with the idea that it could be used as a reference for the campaign. In July of 1810 - six months after the publication of the map - the French military commander, Marshal Masséna led an army of 65,000 troops into Portugal, pushing on towards Lisbon, but was held back by the Lines of Torres Vedras a set of earthworks that had been built on the orders of Wellington. The campaign - significant for the emergence of large-scale guerrilla warfare - was eventually won by the British under the command of Lt. Gen. Sir Arthur Wellesley, later the 1st Duke of Wellington. It could be argued that the French defeat was sealed when Napoleon set out with a massive army on what proved to be the disastrous French invasion of Russia. This seriously depleted the French forces with the result that a combined allied army under Wellesley pushed into Spain, defeating the French at Salamanca and taking Madrid. In the following year, Wellington scored a decisive victory over King Joseph Bonaparte's army in the Battle of Vitoria. Pursued by the armies of Britain, Spain and Portugal, Marshal Jean-de-Dieu Soult, no longer able to get sufficient support from a depleted France, led the exhausted and demoralized French forces in a fighting withdrawal across the Pyrenees during the winter of 1813/1814. France, Napoleon and its European dominance would finally fall the following year at the battle of Waterloo.

Nicolas Thevenin François Thevenin was born in Aix-en-Provence, France in 1931, and Sido (Gisèle Sidoti), Casablanca, Morocco in 1934. Sidoti was her maiden name, which led to her artist's pseudonym Sido and is the reason why some works are impressed GTS: Gisèle Thevenin Sidoti. Both artists' careers began from an early age. François achieved first place for modelling clay in year two, sculpting spontaneously and ambitiously the impressive 'Montagne Sainte-Victoire'. At age five, Sido made local news headlines for a sandcastle contest at the beach, having sculpted a shepherd and her sheep that measured a monumental four meters long, commenting 'It is fun shaping forms!' In 1952, François and Sido met at the Beaux-arts de Paris, where they studied under the direction of the sculptor and painter Louis Leygue. Following an un-official marriage celebrated with close friends, who described how, 'these two spend too much time together', François and Sido officially married in 1954. After welcoming their first child Dominique in 1955 in Paris, they settled in Cannes in the French Riviera between 1957-1958. In 1961, François and Sido worked with the artist Jean Cocteau on the sundial 'Les Lézards' for the village Coaraze in the Alpes-Maritimes above Nice. This commission comprised one of François and Sido's earliest artistic collaborations and works in metal. François and Sido had progressed toward working in metal following an overwhelming and precarious disappointment. For many months, they had shaped and sculpted hundreds of raw terracotta figures, a 'real pacific and sympathetic army'. When it came time to bring the works to be fired at a kiln in Vallauris, they carefully packed up every figure into the car and set off. Alas, a sneaky bump at the entrance of the facility reduced their fastidious three months of artistic production to utter dust and detritus. However, this unfortunate event led to a fortunate outcome, convincing François and Sido to turn towards the far more durable medium of metal. Another collaboration began after meeting Jacques Couëlle, acknowledged as 'the architect of billionaires', whose ideas and appreciation for execution appealed to François and Sido. In 1962, they began working with the architect on Castellaras Estate in Mouans-Sartoux, France, applying their artisanal skill within the space to create door furniture, lighting, among other interior fittings and fixtures. Whilst working with Couëlle, François and Sido became close friends with the actor Marcel Duhamel, who subsequently introduced them to the brothers Jacques and Pierre Prévert, Pablo Picasso (who often visited their workshop, commenting that it reminded him of Bateau-Lavoir, his workshop in Montparnasse), Yves Tanguy, Brassaï, and many others. In 1966, Sido gave birth to their second son Nicolas in Cannes. During this time, François and Sido worked on several international commissions, including work in Montreal, New York, and Santiago del Chile. François and Sido also collaborated with Couëlle's son Savin, the architect for Porto Cervo, Sardinia, which was initiated by the Aga Khan IV. The artists and architect worked together for decades, becoming a symbiotic alliance, that could be thought of as almost genetic, as Savin would incorporate François and Sido's sculpture and objects into his architecture, while the two artists would intricately form Couëlle's volumes into their sculpture. This close collaboration developed through many projects across several continents, resulting in sculptural pieces of furniture that includes tables, seating, lighting, doors, grills, and handrails, many of which were unique works of art. Together François and Sido created a vast collection of work and exhibited at prestigious galleries, including Drouant, Paris in 1972, and Cartier in 1980. Their work, which extends from furniture to sculpture, painting, drawing and etchings, was continually inventive and conveyed an organic, unexpected, and enchanting world for their viewers. In 1986 Sido passed away at age 52, followed by François in 2016 at age 85, both in their shared house-workshop in Cannes. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR TP* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. In contrast, the NEMA utilised 5 rotors for enciphering the alphabet, and an additional 5 paired rotors which give irregular stepping of the rotors. This configuration resolved a major vulnerability of the odometer-style stepping of the Enigma machine. The present machine is understood to have once been kept in war-reserve storage in the event of conflict. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A11389, standard QWERTZ keyboard of 26 keys, white on black backgrounds, battery switch, ebonite Steckerbrett [plugboard] with 8 stecker cables (6 plugged into the Steckerbrett and 2 spares stored in the top lid of case), battery casing, upper lid with 9 bulbs, contrast filter, and original 'Zur Beachtung' instructions inside the lid, in original stained oak box, with hinged front panel and leather carrying handle, 11in x 6in x 13 1/2in (28cm x 15.2cm x 34.5cm) overall Footnotes:The Enigma D reflector (Umkehrwalze D) in Enigma machine A8904 is of particular importance. It is a field re-wirable reflector introduced by the Luftwaffe in 1944 as a means to improve the cipher security of the Enigma. It was first observed on January 2, 1944 in Norwegian traffic. As the UKW-D was not distributed very widely and introduced late into the War, it is very rare. This factor also stopped it from causing as significant a headache for Allied codebreakers as it could have caused. More information about the Umkehrwalze D is available at: https://www.cryptomuseum.com/crypto/enigma/ukwd/index.htmThis example of the three rotor enigma machine 'Modell 1' was used principally by the army (Wehrmacht), and was their favoured enciphering device. British attempts to break the Enigma code were fruitless for years. The breakthrough eventually came after the creation of the famous British codebreaking centre Bletchley Park. Using the technology transferred to them from the brilliant Polish codebreaking team, as well as documents supplied by the French Intelligence from a German spy. Alan Turing, along with Knox, Foss and many others were able to break the Enigma code in 1941, shortening the war by an estimated two years, and saving countless lives. It is unknown exactly how many enigma machines were made, but we know that relatively few survived the war. Rather than have the machines fall into enemy hands, commanders were ordered to destroy these secret machines upon retreat, and documents pertaining to their manufacture were burned or in many cases simply lost. On top of this, Churchill announced that he had ordered all Enigma machines to be destroyed at the end of the war. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
