India. Manuscript Plan of the Position of the Confederate Armies under the Direction of Earl Cornwallis before Shrerungputtun. From the Fifth to the Twenty-fourth of February when the Cessation of Hostilities took place. Likewise the Position of the Enemy's Army Commanded by Tippoo Sultan in person previous to the Action of the Night of February 1792, pen, ink and watercolour plan with a large decorative cartouche and 'scrolled' key, one closed tear, old folds, tipped on to later blue paper, 355 x 220 mm A highly unusual and accurate plan of Srirangapatna during the war with Tipu Sultan. Srirangapatna was the scene of the last and decisive battle fought between Tipu Sultan and a combined force of 50,000 men provided equally by the Nizam of Hyderabad and the East India Company under the overall command of General George Harris. This battle was the last engagement of the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. The Battle of Seringapatam, 1799, was truly momentous in its historic effects. At the battle's climax, Tipu Sultan was killed within the fort of Seringapatam, betrayed by one of his own confidants; the spot where he ultimately fell is marked by a memorial. Apart from the usual gold and cash, innumerable valuables, objets d'art and many of the personal effects of Tipu Sultan, were shipped to England; including the famous automaton 'Tipu's Tiger' which is on display at The Victoria and Albert Museum. Much of the site of the Battle is still intact including the ramparts, the Water Gate, the place where the Tipu Sultan's body was found, the area where the British prisoners were held and the site of the destroyed palace. WORLD WAR I: A series of thirty-two A.Ls.S., Reg, by Walter Reginald Hughes (1898-1963), a Gunner in the Royal Artillery, Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery during World War I, sixty pages (total), 8vo, 4to and some on correspondence cards, various places (most In the Field in France, some from a military camp in England etc.), 1916-17, to various family members in the West Midlands including his Aunt (21) and younger brother Arthur (5), some on printed stationery of the Y.M.C.A. On Active Service with the British Expeditionary Force. Hughes, writing in pencil, sends a series of largely social letters back home, conveying his thanks for socks, gloves, boots, cocoa and cigarettes, although also discussing various aspects of his life with the army, in part, 'We have had one of the latest guns come up to our camp & the shell travels 1820 ft. per sec. Some pace….', writing of a boxing match at the YMCA, 'I got a….man about 6-4 & very big with it, like hitting a haystack, but came off best on points', and of his time training at Cosham in Hampshire, 'I was on guard last night on the front on Portsmouth on the sands. You can see lots of searchlights….I was on from 1am to 5am, it nearly killed me but I suppose you must get used to it', 'We had a big parade on Friday to celebrate the 200th year of the RFA. Most camps had a half holiday but we had a hard days work' and 'We had a military funeral this afternoon, a fellow that died of wounds from France. I was in the firing party….while we are firing [the band] plays the last post, altogether it is a fine thing if it were not for the sadness of the thing….we are still waiting further orders, waiting with kits packed to go to Woolwich & getting very fed up', and of his arrival in France, 'I have been put into the trench mortars….and don't much like the idea of going in the trench after we have had 3 months training with the guns. France is a very nice place' (25th June 1916) and of his time fighting in France, 'I got the fags and very nice they were too. I think you can trust the newspapers that say things are moving all along the line….the other day they asked for 50 men to go up the line…I was one…& this morning they took 10 of the tallest fellows & they are going up the line tonight', 'Both sides have been shelling hard all day but none have got to our village yet. I went up the line last night with some shells….at nights the battle field is lit up with star shells', 'If we get much marching in our new boots there will be some sore feet as they are very hard', 'Much to our dislike we have had to have our hair all off, but it feels nice & cool but looks rotten', 'I don't blame Cyril for keeping out of it if he can. I've had quit [sic] enough of it', 'There is no news & I am sure the war's not over yet….at present they are busy shelling us', in one letter also briefly referring to soldiers having witnessed the Angels of Mons, and in another reporting on a football match in which he had been involved, 'We played K Battery R.H.A., they have 5 prows [sic] playing for them. I played….& had Barns (?) for West Bromwich against me….so I had my work cut out any how he was the only forward that did not score...for the last 20 minutes played centre half as we had a man knocked out & then I had an officer & a Sgt to mark, both international men, the officer got his cap in 1913 & the Sgt got his last year, they were hot...they were A1. I think we did very well. We had a Leeds City man playing for us, he is good but not a patch on their men...'and in one of the final letters Hughes writes from hospital, 'I am a stretcher case....I am not building my hopes on Blighty so as not to get disappointed, but one never knows....It seems funny that just as I come out of action the weather picked up, it makes a chap think of the poor fellows he left behind when he gets in a comfortable place'. An interesting series of letters. Some light overall age wear and a few letters with areas of paper loss. Generally G to about VG, 32

1st-3rd century AD. An inset carnelian cloison intaglio of a man, probably Jason, ploughing with two bulls, temple or palace silhouette in the back; set in a sympathetic modern gold flat-section hoop with three ribs to the outer face with central filigree decoration. 3.41 grams, 21.35mm overall, 18.27mm internal diameter (approximate size British Q, USA 8, Europe 17.49, Japan 17) (3/4"). Property of a European collector; acquired Europe, 1980s-1990s. The ploughing man may represent one of the most famous Greek heroes Jason. In his quest to obtain the Golden Fleece he sailed to Colchis, where King Aeetes promised to give it to Jason only if he could perform three nearly impossible tasks. However, Hera had persuaded Aphrodite to convince her son Eros to make Aeetes' daughter, Medea, the sorceress, fall in love with Jason. As a result, Medea aided Jason in his tasks. First, Jason had to plough a field with fire-breathing oxen, the Khalkotauroi, that he had to yoke himself. Medea provided an ointment that protected him from the oxen's flames. Then, Jason sowed the teeth of a dragon into a field, which sprouted into an army of warriors . Medea had previously warned Jason of this and told him how to defeat them: before they attacked him, he threw a rock into the crowd. Unable to discover where the rock had come from, the soldiers attacked and defeated one another. His last task was to overcome the sleepless dragon which guarded the Golden Fleece. Jason sprayed the dragon with a potion, given by Medea, distilled from herbs. The dragon fell asleep, and Jason was finally able to seize the Golden Fleece. Very fine condition.

A FINE GOLD OPEN-FACED KEY-WIND POCKET WATCH, probably Swiss, second half of the 18th century, the white enamel dial with inner Roman numerals and outer Arabic seconds chapter, with gilt hands and centre-sweep seconds hand, the fusee movement with filigree and engraved cock plate, the interior back cover inscribed "The Emperor Watch, Loot from the Summer Palace of the Emperor of China, Pekin, October 1860, Frank W. Cheney", the interior of the inner case with a coronet mark and numbered 10824, the dial 5cm diameter, the watch 8cm high overall Provenance: Almost certainly taken from the Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan) in 1860 by Sergeant William Murphy (1833-1885) of the (King's) 1st Dragoon Guards and acquired from him shortly after by Frank Woodbridge Cheney (1832-1909), and thence by descent. F. W. Cheney was descended from the pioneering American clockmaker Benjamin Cheney. In 1855 he was made a director of the historic Cheney Brothers Silk Company, co-founded by his father. Frank later became the firm's general manager and under his guidance it became an international leader in the silk manufacturing business. Between 1859 and 1861 F.W. Cheney was sent by the company to buy raw silk in the Orient and to study the Chinese silk industry. It was during this period that he acquired what the Cheney family have always referred to as 'The Emperor Watch'. This period in his life is recorded in 'Frank Woodbridge Cheney: Two Years in China and Japan' by Antoinette Cheney Crocker, 1970. On page 13 the author specifically refers to Cheney acquiring the watch from soldiers involved in action at the Summer Palace in 1860. The vendor's family have understood by tradition that the soldier in question was a British Cavalry Sergeant called William Murphy. K J Asplin's 'China Medal Roll 1856-60', 2004 vol. 2 only includes one person who could possibly fit that description - Sergeant William Murphy (1833-1885) of the (King's) 1st Dragoon Guards. This unit was heavily involved in the action in Peking in 1860 and in the lamentable sacking of the Summer Palace. For an account of Murphy's life and military career see the Journal of the Orders and Medals Society of America, vol. 60, no. 3, May-June 2009. Interestingly, a hand-written family note about the watch, states that it was given to Cheney by 'his sergeant'. It seems clear from this that Cheney was well-acquainted with Murphy. Given the dangerous conditions in China at the time, it may well be that the British army provided some protection to the American businessman during his activity there. After returning to the United States in 1861, F.W. Cheney became a lieutenant colonel of the 16th Connecticut Volunteers. In September 1862 he led his men in the Battle of Antietam, the first battle of the American Civil War and the bloodiest single-day battle in US history. He was severely wounded in combat and following his recovery he returned to the family silk business. Chinese Imperial taste for European watches, particularly by the Qianlong Emperor, is well-documented. Given the 18th century date of this watch it seems likely that it entered the Palace complex during Qianlong's reign.

AN IMPORTANT TROPHY RELATING TO TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR AND THE FIRST EVER FOOTBALL TOUR OF SOUTH AMERICA BY PROFESSIONAL ENGLISH CLUBS [THE LONDON CLUB JOINTLY TOURED WITH EVERTON FC] A silver-plated Art Nouveau football trophy cup & cover commemorating the match Between the Uruguayan League XI and Tottenham Hotspur played at Grand Parque Central, Montevideo, 10th June 1909, inscribed with the match details either side of the top of the bowl, the cover surmounted by a figure of a footballer, overall height 38cm. 15in. In 1909 Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, historically, embarked jointly on the first football tour to South America by English professional football clubs. The tour almost got off to a disastrous start with the Tottenham Hotspur party missing a train at Waterloo Station and thereby missing the sailing of the HMS Araguaya from Southampton. They had to privately charter a tug to catch up with the ship to complete the three week sea voyage. The tour started with what was the first ever football match on South American soil by two professional clubs. The exhibition match was played just a matter of hours after the teams had disembarked in Buenos Aires. Before a crowd of 10,000 Tottenham Hotspur drew 2-2 with Everton. Spurs' other matches comprised an 8-0 win over the Uruguayan League XI in Montevideo on the 10th June, for which the cup being auctioned here was presented. On the 13th June Tottenham defeated Argentinos 1-0 before beating an Argentinean League XI 4-1 three days later, both matches played in Buenos Aires. Spurs then played Everton again going down 4-0 to the Merseysiders in the capital, before travelling to Rosario where they defeated the Liga Rosarina XI 9-0 on 20th June. Tottenham's final tour game was on 24th June back in Buenos Aires, the 5-0 win over Alumni, the team founded by the Scot Alexander Watson Hutton known as the “Father of Argentine Football” (see lot 1232). The tour generated a profit of £300 which was used to develop football further in South America. A further legacy of the tour was that a group of young workers in the Chilean port of Valparaiso set up their own team which they christened Everton (de Vina del Mar), which still play to this day and are currently in Primera B of the Chilean Football League. One of Tottenham's tour party was Walter Tull, the first mixed race player to win a medal in senior English football, and who later died a war hero in the Battle of the Somme having been the first black commissioned officer in the history of the British Army. Tull signed permanently for Spurs after the conclusion of the tour. There is a story in the annals of Tottenham Hotspur history that the party acquired a parrot with they brought back to England on the voyage from South America. Tull and team-mate Fred Wilkes claimed third prize in the ship's fancy dress carnival as Robinson Crusoe and Man Friday. According to Tottenham's records, it is said that the bird died on the very day in 1919 that Arsenal were controversially elected to the top flight of the Football League at the direct expense of their north London rivals.
