Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Dove Carrying Letter" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. On May 15, 1918, U.S. Army pilots, flying Curtiss JN4Hs -- biplanes affectionately known as "Jennies" -- made postal history by flying the first U.S. air-mail route. Lt. Torrey Webb took off from a makeshift airfield at New York's Belmont Park racetrack bound for Philadelphia. Meanwhile, at Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., President and Mrs. Woodrow Wilson were among the spectators eagerly awaiting the takeoff of another Jenny. For more than 20 minutes, Pilot George L. Boyle futilely attempted to start the plane's engine. Just as the president was about to leave, a voice from the crowd cried "gasoline!" The crew quickly realized they had neglected to fill the aircraft's gas tanks. Once the situation was rectified, Boyle was finally airborne. Unfortunately, misfortune struck again. The misguided pilot lost his bearings and, in an effort to seek help, wrecked the Jenny by attempting to land on a country road. However, another flyer completed Boyle's mission and the first day of airmail service was considered a success. Over the next few years, planes became better adapted to their tasks. Before airfields and aircraft were equipped with adequate illumination, mail had been forwarded by rail during the evening hours. The advent of night flying in 1923 made airmail delivery even more efficient. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B10377)
Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "North American B-45 Tornado Airplane" Signed lower left. Original Acrylic painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover with the U.S. 29c Flag stamp issued March 17, 1992. In 1944 American military planners realized that control of the skies truly lay with jet power -- for bombers as well as fighters. A year later Douglas, Boeing, Consolidated, Martin and North American submitted proposals for jet bombers to the Army Air Force. North American's XB-45 prototype made its first flight in 1947, and the aircraft was such a hit that the Air Force initially ordered 96 "A" models, christened Tornados. The Tornado was the U.S. armed forces' first four-engined jet bomber. During the first tension-filled years after World War II, B-45s of the 47th Bomb Wing based at Sculthorpe, England, served as NATO's primary European based nuclear deterrent strike force. But the Tornado never fired a shot in anger, and the formidable aircraft passed into aviation history by the end of the 1950s. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B13547)
Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Hugh Trenchard and DH9A" Original Watercolor on paper painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 29p Lord Trenchard/DH9A stamp issued September 16, 1986. Hugh Trenchard was commissioned in the British Army in 1891 and served with distinction in Great Britain's colonial forces. Realizing the potential of military aviation, Trenchard resolved to learn to fly in 1912. Within a week, he soloed and earned his military pilot rating. At the outbreak of World War I, Trenchard was installed as 3 Commandant of the Military Wing, Royal Flying Corps and commanded the first Royal Flying Corps (RFC) wing in France. Knighted in 1918, Trenchard insisted on the highest training standards, on finding the best men and machines and setting up schools to meet his exacting criteria. One plane which Hugh Trenchard held in high esteem was the DH9A. The plane was produced in 1918 as a replacement for the DH4 and DH8 bombers and was designed around its four-hundred horsepower Liberty engine. Some DH9A 's reached France before the Armistice of November 1918 and were used by Royal Air Force squadrons and the First United States Marine Aviation Force to wreak havoc with the enemy. After World War I, the DH9A was used by RAF squadrons at home, in India, Egypt and Iraq. After long service as a hard-working general purpose aircraft, the DH9A was withdrawn in 1931. Image Size: 11.75 x 14 in. Overall Size: 14.25 x 18.5 in. Unframed. (B10537)
Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Martin MB Series Airplane" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover with the U.S. 29c Flag stamp issued August 15, 1994. The MB-1 was designed in 1918 as a multipurpose bomber with long-range observation capabilities. Yet it was so versatile that the post office purchased several for use in its fledgling airmail service. An evolution of the MB-1, the MB-2 was the only production bomber ever specifically designated as a night bomber by the U.S. Army. The MB-2s were similar to the MB-1 but featured larger wings and other modifications to permit carrying heavier bomb loads. The MB-2 was America's primary bomber following World War I, a period that saw no combat operations. They nevertheless proved the effectiveness of bombers against warships when General Billy Mitchell used them to destroy the decommissioned World War I German battleship Ostfriesland in a demonstration raid off the coast of Virginia in 1921. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B13374)

A 1916 COMMEMORATIVE MIRROR An exact facsimile of the 1916 Proclamation, engraved on the reverse of a sheet of mirror glass, and elaborately framed in a series of gilt rectangles enclosing symbols of Irish history and nationhood, entirely executed to his own design by a Cork craftsman and wood gilder, Mr. Patrick Coffey. The overall style follows the Romanesque architecture of the General Post Office itself. Around the Proclamation are small silhouette portraits of the seven signatories modelled in bog oak. The frame’s pillars to left and right, crowned by Easter lilies, are modelled in giltwood with symbols from the Irish struggle for freedom; they rest on the rising sun, symbol of Fenianism, to left, and the green flag of the Irish Republic to right. At the base, a Celtic cross is flanked to left by a Citizen Army volunteer and to right by a Cumann na mBan member, further flanked by the doorways of Kilmainham Prison, where the signatories met their end. The reproduction of the Proclamation shows some of the printing errors of the original. Above the Proclamation, the design reflects the pillared façade of the General Post Office. At the apex, Volunteer Gearóid O’Sullivan raises the flag of the Irish Republic, as in April 1916. A unique and most impressive artefact, representing Irish craftwork at its best, and highly suitable for display in an appropriate public or private building. In fine condition throughout, approx. 187cms x 108cms (73 1/2''h x 42''w). (1)

A Massachusetts Minuteman Medal awarded to Private D. M. Sidlinger, 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, later Private, Company D, 17th United States Infantry Massachusetts Minuteman Medal, bronze (Daniel M. Sidlinger, Prvt. B. 6th. Regt.) extremely fine £240-£280 --- Daniel M. Sidlinger was born in Maine in 1839 and enlisted in Company B, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia at Townsend, Massachusetts, on 20 May 1861. He was mustered out at Boston on 2 August 1861. Two months later he enlisted on 29 October 1861 for three years in Company D, 1st Battalion, of the newly formed 17th United States Infantry which saw heavy duty with the Army of the Potomac in all of its major engagements before being removed from the line in October 1864. In 1862 he served in the Seven Days Battle, at Second Bull Rim, Antietam and Fredericksburg, where he was wounded. In 1863 the regiment was engaged at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and in the Bristoe and Mine Run Campaigns. The following year it was engaged in the battles of the Overland (Rapidan) Campaign and in the battles of the Siege of Petersburg. It was ordered to duty at Fort Lafayette in New York Harbour in October 1864 and Sidlinger was mustered out on 29 October of that year. After the war Siflinger returned to Maine for a while but for over 20 years down to his death he lived in the small community of Sabula, Jackson County, Iowa. In 1894 he joined the Chauncey Lawrence Post No. 163 of the Grand Army of the Republic (Department of Iowa). He was awarded an invalids pension in 1895 and he died on 6 April 1919, being buried in Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion, Linn County, Iowa. The Massachusetts Minuteman Medal In 1902 the State of Massachusetts authorised the production of the Minuteman medal to be awarded to all ‘3 month’ Militiamen who answered Lincoln’s ‘first call’ for troops in April of 1861. The medals themselves were issued with officially impressed naming, giving the name, rank and unit of the soldier, in a similar style to British Campaign medals. Approximately 3,800 veterans were eligible to claim this medal; however, as they were only awarded on application, many remained unissued. Overall, approximately 159,000 men from this State fought for the Union, thus only a fraction actually received a medal. Of the men that were in these original Militia units, the majority went on to serve in other units during the War. Sold with copied research.
