London Gazette 28 October 1921. The original recommendation states: ‘For continuous good work and devotion to duty. This N.C.O. has been largely instrumental in the successful maintenance of machines in ‘C’ Flight during operations. By his example he has at all times proved himself capable of maintaining a high standard of efficiency in his Flight, and is deserving of high praise.’ Charles Oakley enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps in March 1915, but never served overseas and has no entitlement for Great War campaign awards. He transferred to the Royal Air Force in 1918, and was posted for operational service with the Iraq Command in 1920. Oakley was then posted for service with 20 (Army Co-operation) Squadron at Peshawar from 15 March 1932, and continued to serve on the North West Frontier until his return to the UK in 1937. Oakley advanced to Warrant Officer in 1934 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in July 1933), and was serving as Station Warrant Officer at R.A.F. Waddington in 1937. Artist: Damien Hirst (English, b.1965). Title: "Pharmacy Panel (Gold) (2004) (4 panel)". Medium: Color silkscreen and offset lithograph. Date: Composed 2004. Dimensions: Overall size: 36 x 41 1/4 in. (914 x 1048 mm). Image size: 36 x 41 1/4 in. (914 x 1048 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed lower right. Printed with five colors and metallic gold ink. The full sheet. Fine impression. Fine condition. Backed with a conservation support sheet. Provenance: Private collection, Birmingham, England. Comment(s): A panel of wallpaper (the complete pattern). In 1997, for his restaurant called 'The Pharmacy' located at Notting Hill Gate, London, Hirst designed wallpaper (the "wall chart") based on the pharmaceutical giant Merck’s handbook endpapers, showing pills and products and describing them with their pharmaceutical titles. Merck objected and he withdrew it as an artwork of wallpaper, after he had already plastered the restaurant with silver and gold sheets of the material. Hirst's venture gained further publicity thanks to a dispute with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, which claimed the name, pill bottles, and medical items on display could confuse people looking for a real pharmacy. The name itself breached the Medicines Act 1968, which restricts the use of the word "pharmacy". The restaurant's name was subsequently changed to "Army Chap" and then "Achy Ramp" (anagrams of "pharmacy"). Initial plans to open further restaurants outside London were quietly dropped and the restaurant itself closed in September, 2003. Sotheby's dispersed its contents in 2004. For the massive Pharmacy sale at Sotheby’s in 2004, though, new wallpaper was designed and made that didn’t offend copyright laws, using biblical titles and references to biblical passages. After defeating the Austrian army at the battle of Malborghetto on 23 March 1797, Napoleon followed the retreating Austrians army to Klagenfurt, from whence he hoped to easily march on Vienna. From there he wrote to the Archduke on 31 March with overtures for peace, not wishing to prolong the campaign any further. On 1 April, the date of our order, the French pushed back the Austrians culminating in the victory at Unzmarkt on the 3rd. Klagenfurt was captured in late 1797, forcing the Holy Roman Emperor to come to terms with the Treaty of Campo Formio in October, which effectively left Great Britain to fight the French alone. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

§ Martin Bradley (British 1931-) And the crows devour their deadsigned and titled to the reverseoil on canvas49 x 59.5cmMartin Bradley was, in all regards, determined to become an artist. The son of Gladys Keokeok and army captain, James Bradley, Martin Bradley spent his early childhood in relative poverty before a wealthy benefactor offered to pay for his tuition at the prestigious St Paul’s School, London. However, when his guardian opposed his desire to pursue a career in painting, Bradley, then aged just fourteen, ran away to sea where he worked for three years as a cabin boy on the Central and South American circuit. Whilst at sea, Bradley spent much of his free time painting his shipmates - diametric to the works he is today famed for, these works were mostly academic in nature. Upon returning to London, Bradley began studying Oriental languages, art, and literature and quickly became associated with the anarchic circle of novelists and playwrights known as the ‘Angry Young Men’. Dubbed the ‘Rimbaud of Soho’ due to his nihilistic lifestyle, Bradley’s work was soon recognised by respected galleries such as Gimpel Fils and the Redfern Gallery and in 1956, he joined Gallery One. From the late 1950s, Bradley lived an increasingly itinerant lifestyle, initially living between Paris, Ibiza and Brazil, before travelling extensively throughout Asia in the 1960s and 1970s. An accomplished linguist, it was during these travels that Bradley, alongside his artistic practice, became proficient in more than ten languages, including Tibetan, Chinese, Japanese and Hindi. As demonstrated by the present lot, one could easily imagine that the motifs in Bradley’s arcane works could have been traced from the surface of ancient petroglyphs, the relics of an alien civilisation, though they also retain a decidedly modern feel. Straddling this unusual temporal space and featuring a series of cryptic runes, no doubt influenced by his extensive travels and knowledge of the Far East, the present lot is typical of Bradley’s work during the 1950s and 1960s.The canvas is in plane, though very slightly slack and has a very light layer of dust across the surface. The artist has scraped away at the red painted ground exposing areas of canvas beneath, this is intrinsic to the work and not the result of any damage. There is a very minor deformity to the top right hand side of the canvas and another to the shoulder of the crow, but these are not terribly visible and do not detract from the overall image. There are some very fine drying cracks to the paint layer along the top of the canvas and to the wings and back of the bird, though overall the paint layer appears stable with no lifting or flaking. The exposed area of the canvas along the lower edge appears a little grubby, with a few small scattered accretions.

(1925-2018) Major General Sir John Swinton began his military career in 1944 with the Scots Guards, rising in rank to Major General in 1976. He was also Brigadier of the Queen’s Body Guard for Scotland (Royal Company of Archers) in 1977, and retired from Army life in 1979. With his strong military background, he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for Berwickshire in 1980 and Lord Lieutenant from 1989 to 2000. A high point of his tenure was escorting the Stone of Scone back to Scotland in 1996. The Swinton family history and ownership of land in Berwickshire can be traced to the early part of the 12th century, when Ernulf de Swinton received one of the first private charters recorded in Scotland which confirmed his property from David I of Scotland (1084-1153). This is one of two original charters of David I kept in the cartulary of Durham; both are to Ernulf and also refer to Ernulf’s father (Udard), grandfather (Liulf) and great-grandfather (Eadulf) as holding the land before him. This would make Eadulf the first landowner of Scotland whose ownership could be proved, and means that the Swinton family would by this hypothesis be one of only three (the two others being the Arden and Berkeley families) that could trace its unbroken land ownership and lineage to before the Norman Conquest, making it one of the oldest landed families in Britain. Kimmerghame itself was the site of an earlier house, the home of Sir Andrew Home in the 1730s. The lands and estate of Kimmerghame came into the ownership of the family of Swinton in 1776 when Archibald Swinton of Manderston married Henrietta Campbell of Blythswood in Glasgow. This older house was demolished and rebuilt in the early 1850s, the architect being the celebrated David Bryce, who employed some materials from the older house. Bryce’s Scots Baronial house was substantially damaged by fire in 1938 and only partially rebuilt. The family still retains Kimmerghame and its contents. Captain Archibald Swinton (1731-1804) went to India in the service of the East India Company as a surgeon. He reached Madras in 1752 and took part in the campaigns being waged between the French and English Companies for supremacy in the south. He also took part in an expedition 1756-57 to Negrais in Burma. He reached eastern India for the first time in 1759 when he arrived at Ganjam in Orissa and from there went on to Calcutta. He also transferred from being a surgeon to an ensignship in the Company’s Bengal army. When Archibald Swinton left the Company’s service at the end of 1765, he took with him a letter from the Emperor to King George III asking for help to reseat him on the throne of his ancestors, since Clive would not do so unilaterally; Swinton took a munshi with him in case the answer should be written in Persian. So ‘Captain Swinton, bringing with him the Munshy (sic) (and including in his baggage the large Indian jars, the Indian pictures, Chinese pictures painted on glass, numberless ivory, silver and crystal handled arms, jewels, Persian books, etc. etc.), sailed from India …’ The important group of Indian paintings and other works of art are now in the care of the National Museum of Scotland having been accepted by the nation in lieu of inheritance tax. The Swinton family have had strong connections with the Army and the legal profession. Part of their impressive collection was sold at our saleroom in Five Centuries: Furniture, Paintings and Works of Art sale on 23 Feb 2022.Note: a slightly larger (17.8 cm high) red-glazed vase similar in the Meiping shape and ox-blood colour, dated to the Kangxi period, is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession number: 14.40.70
TURQUOISE-GLAZED HANDLED VASE QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY 清 孔雀綠釉獸耳瓶 rising from a short foot to globular body, waisted neck and wide flared mouth, two makara heads with water emerging from mouth flanking the neck forming a pair of loop handles, covered overall and save for the base with a translucent bright turquoise crackled glaze, the base covered in a thin layer of transparent glaze and revealing the greyish-white body(28cm high)Provenance: Kimmerghame, Duns, the Estate of the Late Major General Sir John Swinton K.C.V.O., O.B.E., D.L.
