Ed Vebell (American, 1921 - 2018) "Homestead Act" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Epic Events in American History series issued in 1985. From the first English settlements at Jamestown and Plymouth, land was "free" if it could be wrestled from the Indians. With independence, the states discovered an inability to preserve their claims from land-hungry settlers. Both the states and the nation attempted the plan of selling property to land companies, which in turn sold it off to settlers. The vast majority of the pioneers who pushed across the Alleghenies, however, preferred to take what they thought was rightfully theirs without payment. As early as 1812, a "True American Society" in Ohio asserted that "every man is entitled by Nature to a portion of the soil." In the 19th century, this principle came to be widely accepted. With the secession of the slave-holding South, opposition to "free" soil, both as free for settlers and as "free" of slaves, disappeared. On May 20, 1862, President Lincoln signed a Homestead Act which gave to any person "the head of a family or of 21 years of age," who had not fought in the Confederate Army, the right to claim 160 acres of public land. It was, potentially, one of the most revolutionary Acts ever passed by a modern legislature, even if it did not quite work out to be a revolution. Most of the newly opened land came into the hands of giant corporations and land speculators, but perhaps as much as 300 million acres of precious American property were acquired by "homesteaders." This Cover commemorates the anniversary of the Homestead Act on May 20, 1862. Image Size: 20 x 21 in. Overall Size: 26.5 x 27 in. Unframed. (B06076)

Howard Koslow (American, 1924 - 2016) "Ulysses S. Grant" Signed lower left. Original oil painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original oil painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative PFCD for America's Greatest Military Heroes series, cancelled April 27, 1992. The year was 1861. The Civil War -- one of America's darkest eras -- had begun. When the cry for Union troops went out, one of the first to answer the call was a middle-aged farmer who had, years earlier, graduated from the famed United States Military Academy. His name was Ulysses S. Grant. On and off the battlefield, Grant exhibited the qualities of a great military leader. He always took the initiative, fought aggressively, and made quick, sure decisions. Within a few months of enlisting, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. Under Grant's staunch leadership and military prowess, the Union Army secured victory after victory. Indeed, Grant's troops won the bloody battles fought at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson and Vicksburg ... to name just a few. He was such a success as a military leader that in early 1864 President Abraham Lincoln promoted Grant to lieutenant general and put him in charge of all the Union troops. With this supreme authority bestowed upon him, Grant began a final campaign against the Southern troops of General Robert E. Lee. Grant's troops constantly pursued and attacked the enemy troops, until General Lee was finally forced to surrender on April 9, 1865 ... ending the war. Ulysses S. Grant's bravery and military genius won for him the love and admiration of America ... and eventually the Presidency of the United States. Image Size: 13.75 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 18 in. Unframed. (B08788)

Howard Koslow (American, 1924 - 2016) "James Doolittle" Signed lower left. Original oil painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is he original which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Proofcard for America's Greatest Military Heroes series, postmarked December 14, 1992. When America entered World War I, James Doolittle's childhood interest in flying led him to join the aviation section of the Army Signal Corps. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and became a crack flight instructor. During the 1920s and 1930s, Doolittle won awards such as the Mackey trophy, and air competitions such as the Bendix Races. The Army Air Corps then sent him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a doctorate in aeronautical engineering. He retired from active duty to work for Shell Oil Company's aviation division, but held his reserve rank as major. In 1940, the threat of war prompted Doolittle's return to active duty. In 1941, the disaster of Pearl Harbor left American morale at a low ebb. In the spring of 1942, Lieutenant Colonel Doolittle led one of the most daring raids of the Second World War: a low-level bombing raid on Tokyo. Leading a squadron of B-25s from the deck of the U.S.S. Hornet (code named "Shangri-la"), Doolittle's men scored a victory for America while forcing the heretofore impregnable Japanese forces on the defensive. For his courageous leadership, Doolittle was promoted to brigadier general and awarded the Medal of Honor. He went on to lead the 12th and 8th Air Forces in Europe and played a leading role in defeating the Luftwaffe. Before his retirement he was promoted to lieutenant general. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 18.25 in. Unframed. (B10558)

Lyle Tayson (American, 1924 - 2014) "Leatherworker Craftsmen" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 13c Leatherworker stamp issue of July 4, 1977. During the Colonial era, leather was one of the most widely used materials. It was used for boots, shoes, coats, gloves, aprons, belts, harness, and many other things. Belts drove simple machines and served as valves in pumps. When America's War for Independence started, the need for leather for military use increased at once by leaps and bounds. The leather harness, for instance, pulled artillery guns and wagons. And, to protect fragile paper musket cartridges from dampness or damage, leather was used to make stiff waterproof cartridge boxes. Every soldier needed one, for damp cartridges could lose battles. As the army grew, more leather was needed. The constant cry from commanders in the field for supplies was not always heeded, but civilian craftsmen, and Leatherworkers in particular, were responsive when possible. To increase production, they shortened the tanning process, producing only slightly inferior leather. In their own shops they worked long and hard, knowing that in the army men went without shoes. These civilian craftsmen answered freedom's call as fully as soldiers and sailors. They, too, risked their lives and their fortunes as collaborators of rebellion. Image Size: 26 x 20.75 in. Overall Size: 30.25 x 24 in. Unframed. (B05136)

Lot 261

‘Conductor Parsons was prominent on several occasions, leading parties to dislodge the Boers from posts too close to the Fort, crawling up to the ‘Old Dutch Laager’ and throwing a lighted hand grenade into the camp, causing a stampede, and, on another occasion, he tried to lay a mine but was discovered and obliged to fall back under heavy fire.’ An outstanding and important First Boer War group of three awarded to Conductor W. Parsons, Commissariat and Transport Staff, ‘the Real Hero’ of the Defence of Lydenburg. An ex-Royal Engineer N.C.O., he was largely responsible for the organisation of the defence and performed numerous acts of gallantry during the siege, for which he was specifically commissioned Quartermaster, later serving with this rank in the Egyptian campaign of 1882 and Bechuanaland Expedition, 1884-85 South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp 1879 (Condr. W. Parsons. Commissariat.); Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, no clasp (Qr. Mr. W. Parsons C. & T.S.); Khedive’s Star, dated 1882, unnamed as issued, mounted as worn, about extremely fine (3) £3,000-£4,000 --- William Parsons was one of the three senior ranks besieged at Lydenburg in 1881 during the First Boer War. He was commissioned for his gallantry during the siege, newspapers of the time, with justification, calling him ‘the Real Hero’ of the defence. The Defence of Lydenburg Lydenburg is a small town named after Leyden in Holland, 180 miles north east of Pretoria. Besieged at Lydenburg were 54 non-commissioned officers and men of the 94th Foot; a Sergeant and 7 Sappers of the Royal Engineers; and 8 N.C.O.s and men of the Commissariat and Hospital Corps, with Surgeon Falvey in medical charge, and Conductor Parsons in charge of supplies. In overall command was Lieutenant Walter Long, a 23-year old junior officer of the 94th Foot. Long’s force of 76 men were crammed into the town’s fort, which measured 78 yards by 20 yards, and under siege, by an estimated force of 700 Boers, between 5 January and 30 March 1881 (84 days). During the siege, Lieutenant Long, was reportedly frequently ill and as next senior Officer, Surgeon Officer Falvey took over command during such periods. As an experienced ex Royal Engineer N.C.O., Conductor Parsons contributed greatly to the organisation of supplies and fortifications, on the eve of and during the siege. Very like James Langley Dalton, V.C., often called real hero of the Defence Rorke’s Drift (and also an ex-N.C.O.), it seems Parson’s was very much the brains behind the defence. Not only was Parsons noted for his work on the defences throughout the siege, he was also noted for the gallantry he showed whist leading parties to dislodge the Boers from posts too close to the Fort, as the following records show: 9 January 1881. ‘Annoyance being experienced from the Day sortie, close vicinity of some of the enemy, who had established themselves among the ruins of the old Dutch laager, Conductor Parsons volunteered and gallantly led out a party to dislodge them. Starting at noon with six non-commissioned officers and men, three natives also going with them, the Boers were driven out and made to retire precipitately down the hill. Then throwing down some shelter the latter had constructed, the party returned under a heavy cross-fire, but with only one of the natives wounded.’ 11 January 1881. ‘Towards midnight Parsons again distinguished himself. Crawling out to the old Dutch laager, from which some Boers were, firing, he coolly lighted a hand-grenade and pitched it amongst them, causing a loud explosion and fresh stampede, with the good result that the enemy did not reoccupy that ground for some days.’ 18 January 1881. ‘Conductor Parsons, with Sergeant Day and five sappers, covered by a supporting party of eight men of the 94th Regiment, under Sergeant Cowdy, sallied forth cautiously to the ruins of the old Dutch laager which had been again occupied by the enemy intending to lay a mine. They, however, failed in this purpose, being discovered after working for some time, and obliged to fall back under heavy fire, though fortunately without casualty.’ 4 March 1881 ‘The wire attached to the mine by the old officer mess-building having become covered with debris and overgrown with grass. Conductor Parsons and Volunteer Holmes remained outside the fort, on the night of the 4th, for upwards of an hour, clearing it, while the enemy's rifle-fire continued. They, it was afterwards found, had managed to take up this fougasse without damage to themselves.’ The siege continued until 30 March, when a Lieutenant of the 3/60th arrived with despatches confirming the terms of peace. Casualties during the siege were four killed, including two volunteers and nineteen wounded, or nearly a third of the defenders. As far as recommendations for awards and promotions were concerned, the Transvaal Argus of 17 September 1881 stated: ‘Lieutenant-Colonel Winsloe has been made a C.B., besides receiving promotion, no doubt for his gallant defence of the fort at Potchefstroom. Men like him and Lieutenant Dalrymple Hay, like Captain Auchinlech, who so gallantly held the fort at Rustenburg, and like Conductor Parsons, the real defender of Lydenburg, should get some recognition of their gallant conduct.’ The following March, Parsons’ gallantry was indeed recognised and with a Commission of Quartermaster, as reported in the Yorkshire Gazette of 1 April 1882: ‘A Well-Earned Promotion.- The promotion of Conductor William Parsons, of the Commissariat and Transport Staff (Son of Mr. Robert Parsons, formerly of Coney-Street, dentist) to be Quartermaster was gazetted a few days ago, and rarely has a man in the British army better earned his laurels, Quartermaster Parsons was acting-commissariat officer at Lydenburg during the eighty-four days siege of the fort by the Boers a year ago. He rendered such important service during that period as to meet with the special approval of Major-General Sir Evelyn Wood, V.C., and was reported upon as “frequently displaying great gallantry.” Quartermaster Parsons also served through the Zulu War of 1879 and has a medal and clasp. He was formerly a non-commissioned officer in the Royal Engineers, and was employed on the Ordnance Survey in Cornwall and Devon for several years. He is Fellow of the Geological Society, and Associate of King’s College, London.’ Shortly after the War’s end, accusations that Lieutenant Long had behaved cowardly during the siege led to a Court Martial and he was given the choice of resigning his commission or facing a Court decision. It may well have been that his relative inexperience, combined with his frequent illnesses and the fact that his wife was also besieged with him, led to the more experienced Parsons, taking a more of a lead in the defence. However it was also reported that on 10 March, when two Boers appeared under a flag of truce, offering favourable terms of capitulation, Lieutenant Long was in favour of accepting but Surgeon Falvey and Conductor Parsons were strongly against. An argument ensued, during which Surgeon Falvey threatened to place Lieutenant Long under arrest for cowardice. The garrison did not surrender. Long resigned, tragically later taking his own life after the criticism of his conduct during the siege. His wife, Mary Long, who was the sole female present during the siege, worked tirelessly in the improvised hospital and was repor...

A post-War 1960 Military Division B.E.M. group of four awarded to Sergeant W. R. Ryer, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, attached 2nd Battalion, The Queen’s Own Nigeria Regiment British Empire Medal, (Military) E.II.R. (14461821 Sgt. David W. R. Ryer, R.E.M.E.); Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Army L.S. & G.C., E.II.R., 2nd issue, Regular Army (14461821 Sgt. D. W. R. Ryer. B.E.M. REME.) mounted for wear, light contacts marks overall, and edge cut to last, very fine (4) £200-£240 --- B.E.M. London Gazette 3 June 1960. The original recommendation states: ‘Sergeant Ryer joined the army in 1945 in the RASC. In 1946 he saw service in Greece and continued to serve with the Middle East Land Forces until September 1949. He was promoted Cpl in September 1948 and Sgt a year later. He returned to the United Kingdom in September 1949. He voluntarily transferred to the REME in 1951, and came to Nigeria in August 1953 serving with Nos 1 and 3 Command Wksps before joining this battalion in March 1954. Since then he has twice extended his service to enable him to complete the task which he had set himself of making his Nigerian successors completely competent in their duties before he leaves them to manage their own affairs. Sergeant Ryer is in charge of the technical repair and maintenance of all vehicles and other mechanical equipment on charge to 2nd Queen’s Own Nigeria Regiment. His untiring energy, and will to succeed, with which he has infected his subordinates, has improved the standard of vehicle mastership in this unit beyond recognition. It is due to his efforts, and his alone, that a very high standard has been attained despite tremendous difficulties caused by the steady reduction in the amount of European assistance and supervision available. At the same time as making this great contribution to day to day administration Sgt Ryer has devoted practically all the very little spare time left to him to instructing Nigerian NCOs and other ranks in their technical duties. This has gradually lead to the assumption of responsibilities by his subordinates so successfully that a very high standard can now be maintained in his absence. The admiration and respect which he has gained among Nigerian NCOs and other ranks, and the sound grounding he has given them by his untiring efforts for the later managing of their own affairs, is worthy of the best traditions of the Colonial Forces and deserving of the highest recognition.’

Ed Vebell (American, 1921 - 2018) "Fulton's Clermont Steamboat" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Epic Events in American History series issued in 1985. It was the English who invented the first steam engine and the first steam railroad but it was an American, Robert Fulton, who, in 1807, formally launched the steamboat era. Fulton was not the inventor, however, of the steamboat: that distinction belongs to poor John Fitch, a Connecticut Yankee and a veteran of the Continental Army who, as early as 1787, built and launched a forty-five-foot steamboat. But, alas, nothing came of that brave experiment. Fitch could get no financing for his invention and in the end gave up in despair and fled to the wilds of Kentucky where he died. Ten years later, the New York lawyer and diplomat, Robert Livingston, anticipating the role that steamboats might play in a vast nation whose only effective transportation was by water, persuaded his young friend Robert Fulton, with whose artistic and inventive talents he was familiar, to try his hand at building a steamboat. Fulton boasted a natural talent for engineering. He eagerly embraced Livingston's proposal and by 1807 was ready to launch The Clermont, named after Livingston's hometown. On its maiden trip, the boat steamed up the Hudson to Albany and returned five days later, having averaged a speed of five miles an hour. Successful as it was, it brought no great wealth to either Livingston or Fulton, for in 1824, John Marshall's Court pronounced their monopoly unconstitutional as an infringement on congressional power to regulate "commerce concerning the several states." Image Size: 20 x 20.75 in. Overall Size: 26.25 x 26.75 in. Unframed. (B06484)

Lot 458

Shannon Stirnweis (Arizona, New York, New Hampshire Oregon, B. 1931) "Fort Henry" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Fort Henry stamp issued June 30, 1983. Once the early explorers and settlers of Canada had established roots in the New World, they soon realized they must somehow protect their holdings. But, whether they came from France, England ... or from any of the other great European nations, they could not expect aid to arrive quickly from an army or navy stationed thousands of miles away in the Mother Country. Therefore, it became necessary for the nations to erect forts in the New World to protect the territories their explorers and settlers had claimed for the homeland. One fort built to guard British interests in Canada was Fort Henry. Fort Henry was erected in 1813 and is located at Kingston, Ontario, on a strategically important peninsula where the British operated an important port and naval base on the St. Lawrence River. It was the only fort to be built of a series of six detached casemated redoubts which were planned to be built in the early nineteenth century at this location. Over the years, Fort Henry was gradually enlarged, and after the construction of the Rideau Canal, the fort was replaced by a new stone fort, completed in 1836. Fort Henry was garrisoned until 1890, but it later fell into disuse. However, in 1939, it ws completely restored and today is a popular tourist attraction. Image Size: 19.5 x 17 in. Overall Size: 23 x 19.75 in. Unframed. (B08177)

Lot 459

Shannon Stirnweis (B. 1931) "Liberation of Smolensk" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Liberation of Smolensk 1943 stamp issued September 25, 1993. Germany's defeat at Kursk in July 1943 marked its last mass effort along the Eastern Front. Hitler, concerned about the Allied landings at Sicily, transferred several of his best divisions to the West. German forces in the East, now hopelessly outnumbered in both men and materiel, had little choice but to fall back. The next two months would see the Germans retreat some 150 miles along a more than 600-mile front, extending from the Donets River in the south, through Kharkov, to the Divina River north of Smolensk. On September 25, facing a rapidly-approaching Red Army, the Germans abandoned Smolensk. Image Size: 21.75 x 17.5 in. Overall Size: 24.75 x 20.5 in. Unframed. (B14354)

Lot 460

Shannon Stirnweis (B. 1931) "Okinawa Invaded by U.S. Marines" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c Okinawa Invaded by U.S. Forces 1945 stamp issued April 1, 1995. On April 1, 1945, a U.S. invasion force of some 180,000 soldiers and Marines, commanded by Army Lt. General Simon Bolivar Buckner, began landing on the shores of Okinawa. On June 18, Buckner would become the highest ranking American field officer to be killed in combat. Ernie Pyle, the Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent, would also die on nearby Ie Shima. If fighting was savage on Okinawa, the scene offshore was just as violent, with the U.S. Navy confronting waves of swarming kamikazes. For the Japanese Combined Fleet, the battle amounted to a suicide mission, as American planes scored hit after hit -- even sinking the giant Yamato. On June 22, when it was apparent that the Americans were about to take control of the island, commander of the Japanese forces Lt. General Mitsuru Ushijima committed Hara-Kiri -- honorable suicide. Image Size: 18.25 x 22 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 24.25 in. Unframed. (B14979)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c Boeing F4B-4 stamp issued November 1, 1996. Boeing's most famous fighter, the F4B-4, was a plane that surpassed all existing aircraft. Boeing built more than 500 of these single-seat biplanes for the U.S. Navy and Army in the late 1920s. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B13746)
