Crimean War Period Ambrotype Photograph Officer 10th (North Lincolnshire) Regiment of Foot, fine coloured example showing the officer in blue patrol uniform with coloured buttons, “10” to forage cap and officers 1845 pattern sword. Set within gilt and glazed frame which is internally fitted into cushioned carry case with hinged lid.

Crimean War Period British Yeomanry Regiment Ambrotype Photograph, fine hand coloured example with the subject wearing scarlet tunic with yellow facings, 1847 pattern yeomanry helmet is sitting on the table next to him. Housed in its gilt metal glazed frame which is set into its leather covered cushioned case. Hinged lid with brass release button.

JAMES FRANCIS MAGEE (1834-1903), The Magee Farm, Marcus Hook, two half-plate ambrotypes of the Magee family posed outside the front and back of the farm house in Marcus Hook, in embossed leather double case (halves separated), with hand written note (presumably copied from information in an earlier note) 'Ambrotype of the farm at Marcus Hook known as the Magee farm taken by James F Meagee Meager? Saturday Aug 13th 1859'. Notes: Each ambrotype is a unique picture, and it is likely Magee took a number of photographs that day, to distribute to members of the family. One other pair of the same scene is known, held by the Library Company of Philadelphia, and accompanied with the same information. Foreword John Hannavy started collecting Victorian photography in the early 1970 when starting out on an academic career which became increasingly involved in the teaching of photographic history in colleges in the north-west of English, finishing up as Professor in Photography and Photographic History at the University of Bolton. What started out as gathering together a few items to show to students during his lectures, grew into an absorbing passion, searching antique fairs, fleamarkets and auction catalogues to put together what became one of the largest collection of thermoplastic cases and cased images in Britain. They have featured as illustrations in many of John’s books on Victorian and Edwardian Britain over the years. Many of the items offered for sale here were illustrated in John’s well-received 2005 book Case Histories – the presentation of the Victorian photographic portait, published by the prestigious Antique Collectors’ Club. There are relatively few of these quintessentially Victorian objects offered for sale these days, and even fewer in pristine condition – early thermoplastic is a notoriously brittle material. Collecting and research continued after he retired from academic life in 2005 to take on the editorship the Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography for Routledge, but as the 'thrill of the hunt’ was a large part of what kept John spending weekends searching for new ‘finds', the scarcer they got, the less the personal satisfaction, and the decision to start researching something different!
