Outdoor Stereoscopic Ambrotype:, an interesting and excellent example of these rare stereoscopic ambrotypes showing an outdoor scene of a young boy sitting outside a house on a high backed chair, looking into a toilet mirror on a small table, the reflection of the boy's face is captured perfectly by the unknown photographer, very lightly tinted to hand and face, gold lined mount, 8.5cm x 17cm.* Notes- See Bonhams, Knowle 9th November 2004 lot 319 for a similar stereoscopic ambrotype which is of the same subject from a further distance, which sold for £390 plus commission.

Comprising: one quarter-plate image of two ladies - appearing to have been taken in the street, with a rudimentary backdrop, a sixth-plate ambrotype of two ladies seated astride a table, a sixth-plate image depicting a lone girl with a posy of flowers (tinted), and a sixth-plate ambrotype of a female within a thermo-plastic frame (frame AF). An incredibly rare 19th century c1860 American Civil War era quarter plate tinted ambrotype photograph. Depicting a gentleman and lady sat facing the camera. Framed in beautiful gold surround, with gold wire braiding. Mounted within a cushioned thermoplastic case, with various Union symbolism ( Artillery ) - cannons, anchor and flags. Condition generally fine, with no damage to the ambrotype. Case measures a total size of: 10cm x 12.5cm. Rare.

Fine Quality Ambrotype Photograph By Humphreys & Halliwell In Cheltenham. Circa late 1850s - Portrait of a seated Lady with some tinted colouring. It seems this lady was "Mary Hannah Norris wife of George James Corser" written on the case these words just readable Also with name of Humphreys & Halliwell in gold tooling, who had a Gallery in Royal Old Wells in Cheltenham. In brown leather covered case, size closed of 3½" × 4½".

The family stay at Bury Knowle House in Headington, and visit Oxford frequently, attending Christ Church Cathedral at the ordination of Harry Rendle, feeding deer in Magdalen Park, attending a flower show at Wadham College, watching the procession of the boar's head on Christmas Day at Queen's College, "a curious sight". She attends the consecration of St Barnabas Church, Jericho, "very high, the bishop of Oxford preached" [Samuel Wilberforce], visit Brasenose College, lunch at All Souls College and lunch at Oxford University Press. With numerous entries relating to the Ballachay family, visiting her mother in Taunton Deane, the birth of her children, living in Portsmouth and Chatham, "Ed went to Gravesend on the velosipede [sic] etc.[Amritsar]. "Went to Amritsar by train. A large party with Mrs. Holroyd, the 6th were encamped there, had breakfast in the camp, then went to the Golden Temple, the sacred temple of the Sikhs then onto the gardens where we had tiffin & croquet came back by train a noisy party coming & going!"
