Barratt & Stanley, Mr. Kilburn, Popowitz, Ross & Thomson, et al. A group of 24 cased images, c. 1840`s-1850`s, six 1/9 plate, thirteen 1/4 plate (four cased as two pairs), four small 1/4 plate, and one empty small 1/4 plate case, the majority Daguerreotypes, five Ambrotypes, one Stereoscopic Ambrotype, and an empty case, the majority in maroon leather cases, six with photographer`s gilt stamped credit on the case, two (those by Popowitz) blindstamped on the gilt mounts, all contained within wooden box. Note: The family appears to be descended from William Roxburgh M.D. (1751-1815), known as the `Father of Indian Botany`. While working as a surgeon for the East India Company, Roxburgh trained a team of Indian artists in botanical drawings and published the results in Plants of the Coast of Coromandel in folio volumes in 1795, 1802 and 1819. In 1793 he took charge of the Calcutta Botanical Garden. The William Roxburgh M.D. whose portrait appears among the images of this lot is presumed to be his grandson.
A 19th century oval ambrotype of an aged negro male, wearing a white stock and waistcoat and dark jacket, seated on a high back open armchair beside a table, 9cm x 7cm; contained in an embossed grained morocco leather case with red velvet lining cut with a two handled urn within a scrolling border. A Victorian ambrotype portrait of a seated gentleman in a good moulded composition case of shaped rectangular form, centred with two race horses within gadroon border and floral and foliate corners, the name "F Goll" to each side, 13cms x 10cms ++some wear to edges of case otherwise good, the portrait with some loss of detail
An Ambrotype attributed to Colonel H. Simmonds, Ceylon Rifles, late 31st Regiment, a veteran of the Peninsula Wars Ambrotype of Simmonds as an elderly gentleman in civilian dress, set within a gilt frame, 82 x 69mm., this in turn set within a red leather case 91 x 82mm., with velvet lined interior and gilt clasp, very good condition £100-150 A paper label on the back of the frame (not examined) reads, ‘Colonel H. Simmonds served in the Peninsula from Feb. 1808 to Feb. 1813 including the affairs at Talavera & Alberche. Battles of Talavera, Busaco, Albuera. Covering the siege of Badajoz in 1812. Engaged every day during the retreat from Madrid & Salamanca the retreat to Portugal & subsequent pursuits of Messena from the lines besides several minor affairs. 1857. Died Jan. 27./69’. Lieutenant Henry Simmonds, 31st Regiment, is listed in the published Military General Service roll as being awarded the M.G.S. with clasps for Talavera, Busaco and Albuhera. In the ‘remarks’ section it reads, ‘Lt Col Ceylon Rifles 17/1/42. Tinlin collection 1965, Spink 1984’. With a photocopy of the reverse label and entry from the Army List from which the details on the label are derived.
Three Victorian Portrait Daguerrotypes, of seated gentlemen, in Morocco leather cases, each lined in embossed red velvet, the images within gilt slips, 12 x 9.5 cms; Together with A Hand-tinted Ambrotype, of a bearded gentleman, similarly cased, and A Hand-tinted Photographic Study, of a mother and her child, on an oval porcelain plaque, in a hinged case with easel stand.
