Her Cornish roots deepened through her friendship with Elizabeth Lamorna Birch, whom she met at Badminton School in Bristol.After studying at the Newlyn School of Painting under Harold Harvey and Ernest Procter, she quickly gained recognition, with her first Royal Academy painting appearing in 1924. Over the next thirty years, 31 of her works were shown at the Academy.Midge was close friends with fellow artist Dod Procter and was the subject of many of her striking portraits. She lived and worked in West Cornwall, exhibiting with the Newlyn and St. Ives artists. She was once engaged to fellow artist Richard 'Seal' Weatherby, though it didn't last. She passed away in 1958 after a long illness, which her family believed stemmed from a monkey she had rescued from a travelling organ grinder.

Provenance : Geere Family Note : Richard Geere born in 1932, and following in the footsteps of his father Charles Edward Geere who was also a Goldsmith and Silversmith, Richard Lawrence Geere was apprenticed to Ramsden and Roed and attended day release classes at the Central School of Arts and Crafts.After working for Asprey and Stuart Devlin he set up his own workshop where he undertook various private commissions and made his own range of silverware much in the style of Stuart Devlin for whom he was a maker. He continued to supply Asprey with bespoke items and photo frames from his own workshop.

ANTIQUE TREADLE WET STONE HAND GRINDER

This Antique Organ Grinder and Monkey Cast Iron Mechanical Bank features a classic scene of a street performer and his trained monkey, a popular motif from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The organ grinder, wearing a hat and holding a small organ box, stands on one side of the bank, while the monkey, dressed in an orange vest, kneels on the other side. The mechanical action likely involves placing a coin in the organ grinder’s slot or on the monkey’s tray. When a lever is pressed, the monkey possibly moves or flips, and the coin is deposited into the base of the bank. The detailed craftsmanship includes vibrant hand-painted colors such as green, brown, orange, and red, though the paint has faded and worn over time, adding to its vintage charm. This bank not only serves as a functional object for saving coins but also as a nostalgic piece of folk art, reflecting the entertainment and culture of its era.
