Original vintage advertising poster promoting a DKW Auto Union brand of motorcycles. Original vintage advertising poster promoting a DKW Auto Union brand of motorcycles. The poster hails their victory in four different classes of the 1936 German Championships. Great dynamic image. Deutsche Meister auf DKW. DKW Auto Union brand of motorcycles. Auto Union AG, Chemnitz, was an amalgamation of four German automobile manufacturers, founded in 1932 and established in 1936 in Chemnitz, Saxony. It is the immediate predecessor of Audi as it is known today. As well as acting as an umbrella firm for its four constituent brands (Audi, Horch, DKW, Wanderer), Auto Union is widely known for its racing team (Auto Union Rennabteilung, based at Horch works in Zwickau/Saxony). The Silver Arrows of the two German teams (Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union) dominated not only GP car racing from 1934 onwards but set records that would take decades to beat, such as the fastest speed ever attained on a public road (at 432.7 km/h (268.9 mph), unbroken as of 2013). After being reduced to near ruin in the aftermath of World War II, Auto Union was re-founded in Ingolstadt, Bavaria in 1949, ultimately evolving into the modern day Audi company following its takeover by Volkswagen in 1964 and later merger with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969. The current corporate entity which bears the Auto Union name – Auto Union GmbH – was founded in 1985 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Audi AG; its purpose is to act as owner of Auto Union's historical trademarks and intellectual property, as well as managing Audi's heritage operations. The company's distinctive logo, of four interlocking rings to represent the original four members of the Auto Union, survives as the logo of Audi. Good condition, tears, creasing. Country of issue: Germany, designer: V. Mundorff, size (cm): 90x32, year of printing: 1936.
1984 Citroën 2CV Special Saloon Registration no. B167 MBY Chassis no. VF7AZKA00KA075926 Engine no. 0904029402•One of the 20th Century's greatest automobiles•High quality restored by the vendor 2018-2022•Restoration photographic record available•'Concours' conditionFootnotes:'The most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car.' - LJK Setright on the Citroën 2CV.Ranking alongside the Volkswagen Beetle, Mini, and Land Rover as one of the classic mass-produced cars of the post-war era, Citroën's quirky 2CV debuted in 1948 and would remain in production for an unprecedented 42 years. The 2CV (two horsepower) had been conceived in the late 1930s by Citroën's Vice-President Pierre Boulanger, who saw France's farming community, many of whom were still using the horse and cart, as an untapped market for such a vehicle. Combining innovative engineering and straightforward, utilitarian bodywork, the 2CV was cheap to both run and maintain. An important attribute, particularly given the target market, was its amazing ability to cross a freshly ploughed field, courtesy of long-travel front/rear inter-connected suspension. Its development interrupted by WW2, the 2CV provided much needed basic transport in the period of post-war austerity and would outlive its humble beginnings, going on to attain cult status as the favoured car of the environmentally concerned motorist. Although the original 375cc air-cooled flat-twin engine grew, eventually, to 602cc, the 2CV's performance remained modest at around 70mph flat-out, not that that concerned the majority of its devotees for whom the roomy interior, full-length sunroof and frugal fuel consumption were of far greater importance. The 2CV was built in civilian, military and commercial versions, the latter - a small delivery van - being known as the 'Fourgonette', which was first seen in 1951. It was a sad day for many when the last French-built 2CV left the Levallois factory in 1988, although production continued in Portugal for two more years. By the time production ceased in 1990 around 4 million 2CVs of all types had been made, making it the most successful Citroën of all time. This 2CV Special was totally restored by the vendor over the period 2018-2022 and is described by him as in 'concours' condition throughout. A photographic record of the rebuild is offered with car, which also comes with a V5C document and is MoT'd to July 2023. Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1967 Volkswagen Type 2 Campervan Registration no. TGC 536E Chassis no. 237098765 Engine no. To be advised•Numerous mechanical and interior upgrades•Left-hand drive•Tuned 1,776cc engine•'Freeway Flyer' gearboxFootnotes:As readily recognisable as the immortal 'Beetle' itself, the VW Type 2 and its derivatives enjoyed an even longer period in production than their saloon progenitor. The original was conceived in the late 1940s by a Dutch Volkswagen agent, Ben Pon, who drew up plans for a van based on the Beetle floorpan and running gear. Known as the Volkswagen Type 2 (the Beetle saloon being Type 1) the result of Pon's efforts arrived in 1950 and almost immediately proliferated into a bewildering variety of models catering for an enormous range of commercial and domestic activities. The original retained the Beetle's rear-mounted 1,200cc air-cooled engine and four-speed gearbox, the latter suitably re-ratioed to cope with the van's greater weight. Engines grew in size and power, and both handling and comfort improved as development progressed. The first major revision of this outstandingly successful design occurred in 1968, by which time almost two million had been sold worldwide. The replacement, also called 'Type 2', was an entirely new vehicle, larger and roomier than before but still rear-engined. Power units grew in size from 1,600cc to 2 litres before production ceased in 1978 with the introduction of the third generation.Upgraded both inside and out, this left-hand drive VW split-screen campervan is powered by a 1,776cc engine featuring an up-rated camshaft, twin 45 EMPI carburettors, a Petronix electronic distributor, race exhaust system, and serpentine belt set-up. The 'Freeway Flyer' transmission has covered only 1,000miles and incorporates an up-rated fourth gear and EMPI short-shift gear lever. Other notable features include a 6'-shortened front beam with air ride; Wilwood 4-pot brake calliper conversion; rack-and-pinion steering; Type 2 Detectives adjustable rear arms with disc brake conversion; and EMPI five-spoke wheels. The interior too incorporates numerous desirable upgrades, featuring a gas hob and sink; climate controlled central heating; pop-up TV; 240V inverter; two leisure batteries; 'rock 'n roll' bed; Safari pop-out front windows; and pop-out side windows. Offered with a V5C document. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1966 Citroën Ami 6 Break Estate Registration no. PUB 144D Chassis no. AM1319480 Engine no. 026700906•Upmarket 2CV derivative•First registered in France•Left-hand drive•Restored in 2009Footnotes:Introduced in 1961, the Ami 6 was a revised, enlarged, and more streamlined version of Citroën's immortal 2CV, the latter ranking alongside the Volkswagen Beetle, Mini, and Land Rover as one of the classic mass-produced cars of the post-war era. The duo shared essentially the same platform chassis and all-independent suspension, though the Ami 6 was only ever offered with the 602cc engine. The Ami was launched in April 1961, four months ahead of the introduction of its widely anticipated Renault 4 rival. Both the Renault 4 and the Citroën Ami had been conceived to cater for a maturing market that required a vehicle slightly larger, better equipped and less basic than the Spartan 2CV. Highlighting the Ami's leisure potential, its advertisements featured photographs of the easily removable seats being used as picnic chairs. The similar-engined 2CV6's and Ami 6's performance remained modest at around 105km/h (65mph) flat-out, not that that concerned the majority of their devotees for whom the roomy interior and frugal fuel consumption were of far greater importance. Offered as either a saloon or Break (estate), the Ami 6 was discontinued in 1971 after over 1 million had been produced. This left-hand drive Ami 6 Break was first registered in France and comes with its original registration document dated 28th December 1966. It also comes with a subsequent Netherlands registration document dated 12th April 2005. Also on file are various old MoT certificates, sundry bills, a current V5C Registration Certificate, and invoices for the most recent works carried out. Restored in 2009, the car is described by the private vendor as in generally good condition, with very good bodywork and paint, while the interior has a few blemishes. A total of circa 48,100 kilometres is currently displayed on the odometer. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
One of just 38 right-hand drive cars produced and offered to auction with 26,200 miles.By the 1960s, Rolls-Royce had finally accepted that many owners might actually prefer to drive their own cars, launching the Silver Shadow with owner-driver comfort in mind, and no doubt appreciated by those chauffeurs still in service. The two-door convertible version of the Silver Shadow soon followed and has been without argument the most successful convertible ever produced by Rolls-Royce. First introduced in 1966 as the "Silver Shadow Mulliner Park Ward two-door, drop head coupé", it eventually became apparent by popular demand that this version deserved to have its own model name so, after a few cosmetic changes in 1971, the Corniche was born. Whilst the Coupé was discontinued in 1980, the Corniche Convertible was produced until 1995, remaining largely unchanged cosmetically, with a production total of 5,678 convertible cars. The purchase of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd, by Volkswagen in 1998 may have raised a few eyebrows but it secured the future of not just Rolls-Royce but also Bentley, a roaring success that surely would have pleased old W.O. himself. The licensing and production agreement between Volkswagen and BMW came to an end in 2003, and the two brands went their separate ways with Rolls-Royce production moving to the new BMW-owned factory in Goodwood, launching the V12-powered Phantom later that year whilst Volkswagen spearheaded Bentley’s new chapter, one of the most significant relaunches of a brand in living memory. Only one new Rolls-Royce model was produced under Volkswagen holding ownership, the Corniche V, and the last Rolls so named.Launched in 2000 with a list price at of £300,000, the most expensive car then offered by Rolls-Royce, the Corniche V has many unique distinctions, not least being the last V8 powered Rolls-Royce, with the 6.75-litre engine enhanced by a turbocharger borrowed from Bentley. Whilst sharing design elements with the Silver Seraph it was based on the Bentley Azure’s platform. The Corniche V remains one of the rarest models produced by Rolls-Royce, and out of 329 cars hand-built at Crewe, just 38 were produced in right-hand drive. Interior refinement and build quality remained as high as ever with lashings of leather and the finest of wooden veneers, and Rolls-Royce still remained the watchword for excellence. This delightful car was one of just 14 Corniches that left the factory in right-hand drive in 2001, finished in Fountain Blue, trimmed in Oatmeal leather with dark blue piping and topped by a contrasting dark blue hood.Registered to the first of just two former keepers on 1st March 2001, the car was purchased in 2009 by a true Rolls-Royce enthusiast who enjoyed the car, driving it sparingly on only the most special of occasions, and stabled alongside his early Corniche Fixedhead Coupē. With his recent passing, the family have entrusted us with this very special motorcar, and will retain the private registration number which is not included in the sale. The car was bought from leading Rolls-Royce specialists Balmoral UK of Halesowen, Birmingham, returning to them regularly for servicing and maintenance, with the most recent service carried out in 2018 at 24,490 miles. The history file includes reams of service and maintenance receipts, and the wallet includes handbooks and the well-stamped service book.Presented to auction with an odometer reading of just 26,153 miles, at the time of cataloguing, this rare motorcar offers perhaps the only opportunity to own a Rolls-Royce that is both old school and modern in equal terms, bridging the best of both worlds, and so rare, that very few people have had the chance to admire the elegant coachwork in person, an omission that can be corrected by taking the opportunity to view this wonderful motor car prior to our sale.SpecificationMake: ROLLS-ROYCEModel: CORNICHEYear: 2001Chassis Number: SCAZK28E5YCH68137Registration Number: TBATransmission: AutomaticEngine Number: 101206L410M/TITDrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 26200 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Magnolia Click here for more details and images
Owned from new for almost 30 years by Roger Daltrey of The Who; in great condition and ready to be enjoyed. One of the 20th Century’s truly great automobiles, the Volkswagen Beetle spawned a host of derivatives, the longest enduring being the Cabriolet. A single prototype was built pre-war, but it was not until 1949 that production commenced, the bulk of which was entrusted to Karmann of Osnabruck whose four-seater Cabriolet appeared soon after the two-seater Hebmuller-built version. Only Karmann’s would stand the test of time, outliving the saloon and remaining ever fashionable, an instantly recognisable motoring icon to this day and one ever popular with showbusiness celebrities.Mechanical changes to the Cabriolet kept pace with those of the saloon until the latter’s production began to wind down in the early 1970s. Thus, the Cabriolet gained the Super Beetle’s MacPherson strut front suspension, trailing-arm rear suspension and more-bulbous bonnet for 1971. 1973 brought with it a curved windscreen (and shortened bonnet), recessed dashboard and altered rear wings with enlarged light clusters. Topping the range was the 1303 LS with a 49bhp 1.6-litre twinport air-cooled flat-four engine. In this specification the Cabriolet continued to be built until January 1980, two years after German production of the saloon had ended. The car presented here is 1977 Volkswagen Beetle 1303 LS Cabriolet formerly owned from new for almost 30 years - from 1977 until 2005 - by Roger Daltrey CBE, founder and lead singer of The Who, legendary rock band of the 1960s. The car is accompanied by a signed letter from Daltrey confirming that he owned the car for that period. Also in the history file is a Volkswagen Museum Certificate which confirms the specification above, a build date of 27th January 1977 and that the car was UK-delivered. It also confirms the original colour scheme of Viper Green Metallic paintwork with a Pale Sand hood. The car has benefited from diligent ownership since 2005, being regularly serviced and maintained. In 2014 the Karmann bodywork receiving a full bare metal respray in the original factory colour of Viper Green, whilst there are still in situ Cibie Oscar driving lamps fitted during Daltrey’s ownership. The previous owner also had the seating and door cards fully re-trimmed in beige leather, with perforated centre panels.During the penultimate service while in Daltrey’s care the original service book was misplaced, and so the servicing history for this period is substantiated solely by his signed letter. Accompanying the car is an original book pouch, containing a period owner’s manual, the authenticity certificate from Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen, some old MOT certificates and previous V5 documents. A 2005 newspaper article from when Daltrey sold the car is also included, along with his signed letter to the buyer at the time. Our vendor is a big fan of The Who, enthusiastically buying the car in 2019, and has since kept up its conscientious custodianship. He has lavished over £10,000 on this very deserving car, primarily to get it back to its original specification, saying “the car is now as near to as it was when it left the factory as I can get it; it's in great nick, not Concours but very good.”A really fun car in very good condition, with Rock Royalty provenance, at an attractive guide.SpecificationMake: VWModel: BEETLE 1303 LS CABRIOLETYear: 1977Chassis Number: 1572067740Registration Number: TNM 325RTransmission: Manual Engine Number: AS468349 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 80000 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: BeigeClick here for more details and images
