c.1930 AJS 350cc OHVRegistration no. not registered (See text)Frame no. 127550Engine no. KR6 TT (also stamped BJONES to left front of crankcase)The vendor purchased this overhead-valve AJS from Adrian Moss approximately 12 years ago but has no knowledge of its history. Following a conversation with Adrian Moss, he advises us that Bob Jones, former captain of the Swindon Robins speedway team, built the bike. Adrian purchased the AJS from Bob Jones' widow circa 20 years ago but no other history is known. The AJS was originally a road bike, and the frame and engine are non-matching. Re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration will be required before further use. The machine is offered with expired tax discs for the period 1977 to 1983 (missing 1982) for the registration number 'MW 4091'; however, according to the HPI/DVLA database, the VRN is now assigned/recorded to another vehicle (a Volkswagen Tiguan). Accordingly, prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to the validity of this motorcycle's registration number as well as its completeness, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding. There are no documents with this Lot, which is sold strictly as viewed. Offered without keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1974 VOLKSWAGEN TYPE 2 DOUBLE-CAB PICKUP Registration Number: VMR 491M Chassis Number: 2642-126-905 Recorded Mileage: 43,000 miles - Rare Twin-Cab version of the venerable Type 2 - Recently purchased and restored at a cost exceeding £40,000 Volkswagen’s Type 2, known officially (depending on body type) as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus, or, informally, as the Bus (US), Camper (UK) or Bulli (Germany), was introduced in 1950 as its second car model following the eponymous Type 1 Beetle.  The Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter van’s forward control layout endowed it with huge versatility, allowing it to be configured in a bewildering number of variants, from simple panel van through to the relatively luxurious Samba Deluxe camper. All models shared common mechanical underpinnings, with a Beetle-derived flat-four air-cooled engine, later adopting the Volkswagen/Porsche developed two-litre unit. By the time production ended almost 1.5 million Transporters were on the roads, with a high survival rate due to a fanatical following and very good spares availability. The Type 2 remained in production in Brazil until increasingly stringent regulations finally killed it off in 2013. This beautiful example, fitted with the later 2-litre Type 4 engine as fitted to the Porsche 914 model, was imported from South Africa in the last few years. The Pickup was subjected to a 12-month comprehensive restoration in current ownership, which was completed around the start of 2021. Much of the fabrication and restoration work was entrusted to respected specialist Beetlelink of Surrey, supported by bills for c. £18,000. Our owner, an experienced classic car restorer himself, tackled the remaining mechanical rebuild and reassembly. The schedule of restoration work in the history file runs into 150 or more rows of various parts acquired or services provided, with numerous items being purchased from specialists such as from Just Kampers and Volkswagen Heritage. New sills, wheel arches, cabin and cargo floors were let in, and both new drop-sides and tailgate fitted. The engine and gearbox were rebuilt and reinstalled, the Pickup then being fitted up with numerous replacement mechanical, electrical and trim components. Upgrades have included the fitting of two twin choke Weber carburettors, and also power steering. The cost of all of this effort was in excess of £40,000, as detailed in the truck’s history file. This fabulous VW is finished in an attractive shade of light blue, with a tan canvas tilt and Porsche 17” Design 90 wheels, painted in Satin Black. One of the best Double-Cabs in the country, the Pickup is supplied with a history file and UK V5C.

Lot 6

1985 PORSCHE 944 COUPE Registration Number: C612 VPL Chassis Number:  WPOZZZ94ZGN401398 Recorded Mileage: 112,000 miles ‘Here was a model much more in the Porsche tradition, a 217km/h (135mph) coupé with sparkling acceleration and superlative handling. Some 90,000 were built during a 10-year manufacturing life.’ – Jonathan Wood, ‘Porsche – The Legend’. Announced in 1981, the 944 was the third of Porsche’s new family of front-engined sports cars. The first of the line, the 924, had arrived in November 1975 and drew heavily on Volkswagen/Audi components: the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, overhead-camshaft engine being a development of the Audi 100’s and the four-speed transaxle transmission a VW unit. Six years later, along came its close relative – the 944 – which was constructed along similar lines and from a distance hard to tell apart from its 924 progenitor. Beneath the bodywork (50mm wider than the 924’s) was a 2.5-litre, 163bhp overhead-camshaft ‘four’ – in effect half of the 928’s V8 bored out – fitted with twin balancer shafts to counter the vibration often encountered in such units. The rear transaxle – a five-speed affair this time – was retained, while the 924-type running gear was suitably up-rated to cope with the 944’s superior performance. Subsequent developments included a Turbo, 16-valve 944S/S2 and a cabriolet. First registered in November 1985, this early facelifted Porsche 944 was specified from new in a very period colour scheme of Mahogany Brown Metallic with a matching chocolate pinstriped velour interior. The 944 was formerly the pet-project of an employee of McLaren racing, who treated the Porsche to a full belts service with all fluids, an overhaul of the power steering pump, new anti-roll bar bushes, front and rear brake pads, CV boots, and sundry other smaller items. In current ownership the 944 has gained a newly retrimmed original steering wheel, the dash top has been recovered, the heater controls repaired, rear boot latches repaired, sunroof mechanism repaired, a few minor electrical glitches rectified. Receipts for in the region of £3,000 support this recent work. Showing just over 110,000 miles from new, the Porsche is said to drive and perform well, and is offered with a current UK V5C, its original book pack and various receipts and bils for recent maintenance in the last few years. Although running and driving nicely, the 944 would now benefit from some cosmetic attention to the paintwork and trim. Forget about firing up the Quattro, instead go with this cooler, more refined, unburstable modern classic.

2011 Volkswagen Golf GTi Edition 35 DSG Transmission: automaticMileage:29662Following Volkswagen's 30th anniversary edition GTi, the 35th anniversary was celebrated with the GTi Edition 35. Its engine was an updated version of the Mk5 GTi engine (also used in the Mk6 Golf R), a two litre turbocharged engine with 232bhp (24bhp more than the standard GTi) and acceleration from 0-62mph is in 6.6 seconds.  A range of cosmetic upgrades and extra standard equipment were fitted, and it also got a unique lower front fascia and Recaro sport seats. This lovely and rare 35 edition from Japan is presented in metallic grey with black leather and Alcantara interior. It comes with a full history and a stamped VW book (from Japan) and has cruise control, climate control, electric folding mirrors, automatic lights, adjustable suspension, trip computer and has the desirable six speed DSG automatic gearbox. A 'hot hatch' indeed with great performance and being the rare 35 edition, its certainly one to consider bearing in mind its low mileage.Interested parties please note that contrary to what is printed in the catalogue and what is on the website, this car does not have a full service history as stated but has service history from 30,000 miles onwards.

Lot 181

2009 Volkswagen Golf GTi 'Pirelli' DSG Transmission: automaticMileage:55712The Volkswagen Golf Mk. 5 was the fifth generation of the Volkswagen Golf and the successor to the Mk. 4. Sharing the Volkswagen Group A5 platform, it debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in October 2003 and went on sale in Europe one month later. The GTI comes with VW's four-cylinder 2.0L Turbo engine (FSI) which gives it 197 bhp. Transmissions include a six-speed manual or six-speed DSG. The Mk. 5 is now regarded as probably the best incarnation of the legendary GTi after the original Mk. 1 of 1976-1983 and is fast acquiring modern classic status. This lovely, limited edition 'Pirelli' Mk 5 GTi is presented in black, with black leather/Alcantara interior with yellow stitching, and bearing the eponymous Pirelli design in the centre of the seats which looks superb. It comes with a full history with all books present, two keys, power steering, climate control, cruise control, electric windows and electric folding mirrors. It is also fitted with the desirable six speed automatic DSG gearbox. It was last serviced 4000 miles ago in Japan and is in very good condition throughout.

Lot 193

1979 Renault 5 Gordini Mk. ITransmission: manual The Renault 5 Alpine was one of the first hot-hatches, launched in 1976 - going on sale two months before the original Volkswagen Golf GTI. The right-hand drive version was shown at the British Motor Show in 1978 and was officially on sale from 4 April 1979 in the UK and was sold as the Renault 5 Gordini because Chrysler Europe already had the rights to the name "Alpine" in the UK. UK launch price was £4149, nearly a third more than the previous top model the TS at £3187, showing the considerable changes to the car over the 64PS TS which could not reach 100 mph compared to the 93PS Gordini which could reach 110 mph. The 1.4 L OHV engine, mated to a five-speed gearbox, was based on the Renault "Sierra" pushrod engine, but having a crossflow cylinder head with hemispherical combustion chambers and developed 92 hp, twice as much as a standard 1108 cc Renault 5. The larger engine and its various performance parts meant that the spare wheel could no longer fit there and was relocated to the boot/trunk. The Alpine could be identified by special alloy wheels and front fog lights and was equipped with stiffened suspension, but still retaining the torsion bar at the rear with added anti-roll bars. Renault quoted a top speed of 110 mph and tested in the July 1979 issue of UK magazine CAR, it achieved a 0-60 mph in 9.7 seconds.First registered 8th August 1979, this rare Silver Mk I Gordini is likely one of the earliest examples of a Mk I still in existence in the UK. Purchased in 2015 complete and as a good runner it was owned by two brothers who took great pride in their cars and loved this 5 dearly. They maintained the car- which could outperform a turbo car in certain situations- impeccably. The seats are very rare, in the original fabric and in fantastic condition, having spent much of their lives having been protected by special seat covers made to protect them and complement the original interior. As with all old Renault 5s it had some bodywork imperfections, therefore our vendor decided to sympathetically restore it, and spent many hours of the restoration determined to keep this car as original as possible- including a sympathetic respray. The decals have been reproduced from originals, wheels have been refurbished and diamond cut, new tyres fitted and it presents as a time warp example. Having been in storage since the restoration was completed and not driven on the road since, it is therefore stunning; but with this in mind, the car would benefit from a check over before it was driven on the road in anger. Simply put, find another… and then find another in this condition with thousands spent in a sympathetic restoration. A true collectors dream and incredibly rare on these shores. Why waste your time with a Mini, when you could have Gordini?Restored sympatheticallyIncredibly rare UK supplied Mk I
