Historical DocumentsBenjamin Disraeli1855 (18 Jan.) A.L.S. sent from Wynard Hall is signed "B. Disraeli" declining an invitation to address the Stockton Institution. Light folidng creases. Photo Benjamin Disraeli, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield, KG, PC, FRS, (21 December 1804 – 19 April 1881) was a British Prime Minister, parliamentarian, Conservative statesman and literary figure. He served in government for forty years, twice as Prime Minister of Great Britain.Wynard Estate: Several prominent families owned the Wynyard Estate following its lease by King Edward I to Sir Hugh de Chapell in 1230. Although earlier houses are recorded on the lands, Wynyard Hall as we know it today was not completed until 1846.In 1813, the previous house with all its land and a considerable fortune earned through coal mining was inherited by Frances Anne Vane Tempest. Her marriage in 1819 to Charles Stewart marked the beginning of the Londonderry connection with Wynyard. Elevation to the title of 3rd Marquess required a grand house befitting their new station in life.Designed by Philip Wyatt and Ignatius Bonomi, the hall incorporates French and Italian marble, Spanish mahogany, stone from the family quarry and exquisite stained glass. The elaborate interior designs reflect the ostentatious style popular during the reign of the French king, Louis XIV. The magnificent Hall and surrounding parkland provided the perfect setting for lavish entertainment of the most important and influential people in the land.Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium.
