The eight-day movement automatically winding with the opening and closing action of the case with alarm setting button to the winding crown at 6 o’clock numbered 711605 and with supporting strut to rear, the square Arabic numeral dial with luminous numerals, alarm setting inner track and signed MOVADO, 8 DAYS, SWISS MADE in two part leather covered rounded rectangular case, 15cm wide when open.

Provenance according to a card sold with the lot; `the clock originally belonged to Lord Ashton who had a special fixture made in his carriage for travelling purposes`. It has then descended through his family including Miss Margaret Ashton who became the first lady councillor in Manchester.

An unusual English double fusee, hour striking carriage clock by Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy, London, circa 1840. The circular, silvered, engine turned dial, signed Vulliamy, London, with Roman numerals and blue steel Bregnet hands, set within an engraved, gilt mask. The hour striking double fusee movement with English ratchet tooth lever escapement and heavy bi-metallic compensation balance, striking on a gong, with silvered strike/silent and hand setting dials to the rear. The backplate signed VULLIAMY LONDON No. 1497. In a gilt, five glass, brass case (gilding rubbed) on bun feet, with turned carrying handle. G.P.O. Chrome plated Brass cased Drum clock with second hand. Stamped GPO on rear together with CG 24 235 No 1. A heavy clock with a good quality English Astral Movement in full working order. The enamelled dial has no chips, a rare clock believed to be from an early railway travelling post office carriage.
