Queen: Freddie Mercury's Personally Owned Promotional Display Model Of 'Frank the Robot' From The Album News of the World, 1977, the freestanding model of plastic construction, comprising two moulded halves secured by screws, the body painted silver, the chest bearing a faded vinyl sticker reading QUEEN NEWS OF THE WORLD, the palms open, originally holding a wire basket displaying a copy of the album (basket not present), accompanied by a letter of provenance, 54in x 33in x 19in. (137cm x 84cm x 48.5cm) Footnotes: Provenance: Gifted to the vendor's Father who worked in the music industry having previously managed artists such as Ginger Baker and Dave Stewart among others. This 'Frank' robot was housed in Freddie Mercury's home before it was offered to the vendor's Father in the 1980s when Freddie's house in Kensington was being renovated. 'Frank' was then put on display at their music studios Acorn Recording Studios in Acton until the 1990s. It has remained with his family since. As part of the promotional campaign for Queen's sixth studio album 'News of the World', a small number of display models were produced to advertise the new LP in select flagship record stores across the UK. On the album cover sleeve and inner gatefold, 'Frank' carries the bodies of Brian May and Freddie Mercury in one hand, as John Deacon and Roger Taylor tumble from his grasp. The original artwork was painted by American Sci-Fi artist Frank Kelly Freas (1922-2005), after whom the robot was likely named. Freas had previously painted an identical anthropomorphic robot for the October 1953 issue of Astounding Science Fiction magazine. Blistering acceleration and incredible handling with a power to weight ratio of 400bhp per tonne. The Superlight R400 uses a two-litre Cosworth engine producing 210bhp and 150lb/ft of torque at 6300rpm. It weighs just 525kg, resulting in a power-to-weight ratio of 400bhp per tonne and a 0-60mph time of just 3.8 seconds. The car was the first Caterham model to benefit from new laser cutting and robot welding chassis technology and the result is a 12% increase in torsional rigidity.Assessed by the RAC at the time, they concluded:“Mated to a new robot-jig welded chassis, the R400 provides the driver with even more confidence to plant this legendary sports car into corners. The rigidity of the space-frame has increased by 12% and the greatly reduced flex provides improved grip, improved feedback to the driver and ultimately more speed on the track. The torque characteristics of the R400 power plant provide instant performance and, more than ever before, there is an emphasis on ensuring all the messages from the road are faithfully transmitted to the driver through the suspension and steering. An improved progressive feel to the rear suspension has been achieved through no fewer than 30 changes to the dampers, including improvements by Bilstein to reduce rod to guide friction levels, plus optimisation on the anti-roll bars and road springs. Sitting purposefully on bespoke Avon CR500 tyres and 15" Caterham-designed alloys, the R400 is fitted with a limited slip differential, 6-speed gearbox, wet sump and composite bucket race seats as standard”.Offered here is a UK-supplied, right-hand drive example presenting in fabulous condition. The current private owner has recently treated the car to a full service carried out by Caterham and the mileage, at the time of cataloguing, was 22,808. Our vendor is generously including the appropriate registration number, R40 OGM (R400 GM) with the sale. This versatile little car is street friendly, and track compliant. It's a proven fact that Caterham’s still represent the most cost-effective way to enjoy true supercar performance, handling and braking making this exceptionally well-sorted R400 worth a closer inspection.SpecificationMake: CATERHAMModel: R400 SUPERLIGHTYear: 2007Chassis Number: SDKRD5LC470031718Registration Number: R40 OGMTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Right-hand DriveClick here for more details and images
