Joseph O'Reilly (1865-1893) Contributions Earnestly Solicited Oil on canvas, 91 x 61cm (35¾ x 24") Signed and dated 1890. Inscribed with title verso. Exhibited: R.H.A. annual exhibition 1891, cat. no. 97, for £30. Born in Dublin and educated at The Royal Hibernian Academy School, Joseph O'Reilly won numerous prizes for his paintings. He was awarded a bronze and a silver medal, and by 1887 had won the The Albert Scholarship, quickly establishing himself as a landscape and figure painter, and commanding robust prices for the titles that he showed at the R.H.A. between 1885 and 1893. This was the work that won him The Taylor Scholarship, enabling him to travel to Paris to paint. He was encouraged to make this trip by celebrated Irish impressionist and portrait painter Walter Osborne (1859-1903). Taylor was evidently much influenced by Osborne, who had himself won the same scholarship and spent time painting in France in the early 1880's. There are striking similarities between this painting and Osborne's 'A Tempting Bait' (shown at the RHA in 1883, no. 129), especially in the pose of the begging fox terrier, and that of the young boy looking down at his dog, with his ankles crossed and legs dangling. Osborne's arrangement is darker, and its story, with a rat-trap being set, is more strongly narrative. Walter Osborne's father William Osborne, was also a prolific painter of animals, and his painting of 'The Dogs' Parliament' (exhibited RHA 1887) shows a terrier in a closely similar pose to O'Reilly's. As a way of successfully demonstrating his artistic talents, O'Reilly seems deliberately to have set himself the challenge of depicting light on a variety of surfaces: metal, earthenware, glass, bare flesh, draped wool and eggshell. His choice of objects is a favourite one of earlier genre painters, who often arranged vignettes such as the one shown here in the lower left corner, to show off their skills at painting difficult transparent or reflective things. The scene hovers between farm kitchen and studio. His small boy sits on a Thonet bentwood chair, but the rest of the props are more suggestive of an Irish farmhouse. The spaniel sits high to beg on a creepie stool draped with a cloth, the striped blue and white jug rests on a Carpenters' Chair, and in the background, where sunlight falls through the window, is a scrubbed-top table of a type common in Irish farmhouses. Strickland considered O'Reilly's work to be 'brilliant and successful', but it was cut short by his death of consumption, aged only 28, so his surviving works are very rare. JOHN CALLCOTT HORSLEY^ RA (1817-1903) A MERRY CHASE AT HADDON HALL signed and dated 1882^ 90 x 126cm Exhibited:Royal Academy^ 1882^ No 295. Illustrated: Blackburn (H)^ ed.^ Academy Notes 1882^ p32^ |Old English interior and costumes; a bright scene^ difficult to realise in days of sombre costume.| J C Horsley first saw Haddon whilst on a visit to the Barker family in Bakewell in 1835. He later described his impression of this most romantic of English manor houses: |Next morning we sallied forth and walked across the meadows to Haddon. It is absolutely unique... | |I was naturally filled with yearnings to paint pictures^ in which I could use as backgrounds the ancient halls and chambers^ and I dreamed many a dream of pictures to be^ as I sketched diligently the beautiful scenes before me.| (Recollections of a Royal Academician by John Callcott Horsley^ RA^ 1903^ pp101-2). Rent Day at Haddon Hall (1839) his first RA picture^ established his reputation. He was to return to Haddon as the setting for some of his most ambitious compositions. These include Coming Down to Dinner (1876) in Manchester City Galleries. In this^ as in A Merry Chase the scene is set in the same Staircase Hall^ with its venerable stone window and stained glass^ rich hangings^ wainscoting and all such antiquarian details^ wholly in keeping with the 16th century costumes. In both paintings Haddon has been ~restored~ to its former glory probably because Horsley~s Rent Day had been gently criticised for its display of expensive props and textiles being |placed in a desolate weather-stained hall as it is now.| The similarities of the the two are so marked that it is plausible to suppose Horsley was experimenting with staging different scenes in the same place^ just as a director would arrange the players on a stage. In the former picture the Steward stands^ in full ceremony^ at the foot of the stairs and a Negro servant is waiting at the head of the table^ almost out of sight. A Merry Chase^ as the title suggests is a much livelier scene. The Steward is replaced by a man with a tray of victuals^ whilst a scullion drops a pewter plate in the melee. ++In good ready to hang condition^ the varnish requiring a light clean^ lined and conserved for the present local private vendor many years ago and not offered for sale for in access of c 50 years. In 18th c style gilt frame

Entertainment – Harold Fielding – Pantomime – Cinderella archive of documents concerning Fielding’s production of Cinderella at the London Coliseum in 1958 (starring Tommy Steele, Jimmy Edwards, Kenneth Williams, and also featuring Ted Rogers), including five complete copies of the script (one of which was from the original Broadway production of the show), with many alterations and additions (included is a copy with the Lord Chamberlain certificate which has been stamped for approval throughout). The archive also includes running order, lists of props, with suppliers and costs, minutes of progress meetings by Fielding and his company, costume requirements for each of the principles, schedules for the dancers etc. There is also a list of the salaries paid to the cast members for both the 1958 run at the Coliseum and a subsequent run at Bristol in 1959. An additional list gives salaries for a run of the production at the London Adelphi in 1960 – with Tommy Steele being paid £1, 600 (say £25, 000 in today’s money) while Kenneth Williams only received £125 (£2, 000). A fascinating insight into the staging of a headline pantomime in the West End at the end of the 1950s. The production of Cinderella had transferred from Broadway in 1957 (where it had starred Julie Andrews in the title part) to London. It was written by Rogers and Hammerstein
