Lot 167

David Hosie (Scotland, b. 1962) - Urban Youth, c. 1993 oil on canvas painting. Exhibited at the Edinburgh International Festival, 1993. Signed & titled to verso. Framed. Measures approx. 141 x 64cm (55" x 25") David Hosie was born in Glasgow in 1962. He trained at Edinburgh College of Art graduating with MA in 1986. The stark introspective of imagery in the work is challenging and ominus yet images of youth are arguably symbols of hope, optimism and regeneration which serves to emphasis Hosie’s notion of the “fragility of optimism”. Hosie’s figures appear to symbolise a sense of aloneness and a search for identity. Where the onlookers eye is made to rest on a frozen stillness. Child/adult figures wrestle with their own presence, often accompanied by images of broken aeroplanes, guns and other toy like props. Lovers float and fall within silent skies where the static quality of the protagonists serve to intensify the emotional aspect to the viewer. This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

** FRANCIS CAMPBELL BOILEAU CADELL RSA RSW (SCOTTISH 1883-1937) DAHLIAS (c1929) Oil on panel, signed lower left, signed, inscribed with title and 'Absorbent ground NEVER varnish' verso, 44 x 36cm (17.3 x 14.17") Provenance: Dr Arthur H H Sinclair, 6 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh (now Bute House) c1930. Sinclair (1868-1962) had a fine art collection and was President of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and the Hon Surgeon Oculist to the King in Scotland. His brother, Alexander Garden Sinclair ARSA, was an artist and member of the Society of Eight with FCB Cadell. Thence by family descent. Sale; Bonhams London, 9.6.99 (lot 23) Private Collection Jersey Private Collection Jersey Note: FCB Cadell, the youngest of the Scottish Colourists, came into his own as an artist in Venice in 1910. The salon paintings he composed before the War were his most original contribution to date, featuring elegant 'fashion plate' women as motifs within his meticulously-arranged studio, but the style remained post-impressionist and his palette largely subdued. However the works from the 1920s, as with the present picture, perhaps reveal the true nature of the artist and the man. Particularly in the still life genre, we see his adherence to 'rigid line' and delight in pure colour. Many still lifes feature favoured studio props/motifs, such as the blue jug, small green Chinese bowl and silhouette, composed against the lilac wall he had first used c1915. Here we see his interest in pattern, geometry, simplified form and interior design, with his paintings reflecting the age of Art Deco and Jazz. The dahlia blooms themselves seem almost stylised, such is their visual impact.Buyer's Premium 24% + VAT. Also subject to Import VAT @ 5% on hammer.PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS LOT CAN ONLY BE VIEWED BY APPOINTMENT OUTWITH ADVERTISED SALE VIEWING TIMES. Condition Report:Presents in good condition. Very slight bow to panel. Minor abrasions/chips/rubbing to edges of panel. There appears to have been some sort of coating applied to the rear of the panel, rendering it slightly yellowed and shiny. However there is no apparent evidence that it has had any effect on painting itself. PLEASE NOTE that this report has been prepared by an experienced picture specialist. If you wish to have the picture examined by a restorer you are welcome to do so strictly by appointment

Registration - HCG 694E Chassis No. - 212292 M.O.T. - January 2025 Odometer - 98,575 An unusual but beautifully presented premium 1960s saloon, this example of Volvo’s Amazon 122 S looks great in its dark blue bodywork. It’s largely untouched over the years, but has had a little restoration work carried out – as is usual for a car closer to 60 years old than 50. It’s described by the vendor as ‘presentable and very usable’. The interior is on similar lines, with black vinal upholstery having seen better days, but not in bad condition overall, and looking good with the body-coloured dashboard, alongside period steering wheel and dials – typically 60s in style, and looking fantastic for it. Under the bonnet sits a 1.75-litre four-cylinder engine and four-speed manual gearbox, with twin carburettors on the former for improved performance – earning the ‘S’ part of the car’s badge. ‘HCG 694E’ comes with its engine in ‘excellent’ condition according to the vendor. Work has been carried out on the underside of the Amazon, setting it up to be protected for years to come, thanks to Dinitrol sealant. New parts are also visible, such as front brake discs and callipers, new springs and dampers, fuel tank, and hoses. ‘HCG 694E’ has an MoT which is valid until January 2025 (although MoT and tax exempt) and the odometer reads 98,575 miles, however we cannot verify this to be correct. It also comes with a large history file including manuals and receipts, plus a second set of keys. In 1956, Volvo launched one of its most successful model ranges, the 120-Series which was to remain in production until 1970. Only in Sweden was it officially known as the ‘Amazon’, due to the name already being in use with a German motorbike manufacturer, however it still kept this moniker across the globe. Starting with the 121 and 122 models, the range soon established itself as a comfortable, reliable and superbly well-built car which also introduced new levels of safety and ergonomics, which were definitely a novelty in the late 50s. Whilst not being a classic in the forefront of many British enthusiast’s minds due to it being relatively expensive in period, it still achieved huge success on the rally stages and is a great all-year-round useable classic car that is immensely useable in day-to-day traffic. In summary: · An interesting and rarely-found classic Volvo for the UK · Splendid looking example in deep blue, and with many period features · Lots of recent work carried out
