a german wheel-lock belt pistol,nuremburg, circa 1575-80 with two-stage barrel flared at the muzzle and struck with Nuremburg mark, flat lock struck with maker's mark of Hans Stopler ( Neue Stockel 1056), the lock-plate incorporating a projecting slender bar carrying the dog-spring, the latter formed with arms of distinctly unequal length, and fitted with flat wheel-cover, safety-catch and sliding pan-cover ( release mechanism missing), with ebonised full stock inlaid withengraved horn plaques set within horn segmental lines, the butt decorated with a bold pattern of leaves and differing flowerheads on scrolling tendrils, involving smaller ball-flowers along the spine and a grotesque mask cartouche about the barrel tang (some inlay missing, the fore-end extensively cracked), compressed spherical pommel inlaid with symmetrical arrangements of bold flowerhead ornament alternating between slightly raised cabled horn lines and with a grotesque mask rondel cap of engraved horn ( chipped), and fitted with steel trigger-guard and belt hook ( ramrod-pipe and ramrod missing) 53.4cm., 21in. The configuration of the lock-plate together with its distinctive incorporation of an anachronistic type of dog-spring is unusual; the latter being normally associated with wheel-locks dating from circa 1540-50. A pistol with a very similar lock, by the same maker, is in the Stibbert museum, Florence.

a rare commonwealth period Officer's English-lock pistol, circa 1650 with 13 1/2 in brass barrel formed in two stages, decorated with a band of na•ve lightly punched scrollwork between punched sprig girdles on the breech, a pair of punched and incised girdles at the median and cast with a raised breech moulding fitted with iron tang ( the barrel shortened by up to 2in.), bevelled trapezoid lock retained by three side-nails, fitted with separate pan, horizontally acting sear and dog safety-catch engaging a flat broad-breasted cock ( top-jaw and screw missing, the steel altered within its working life), figured walnut full stock, fluted fore-end ( incomplete towards the muzzle, cracked and chipped along the left-hand side), flattened butt carved with a wheat-husk moulding behind the barrel tang, punched with three small decorative arrangements of stars, the pommel fitted with an ivory cap ( chipped) and enclosed by a band of brass engraved with strawberry foliage, brass trigger-guard incised with a wavy linear pattern en suite with the cock and safety-catch, and one small brass ramrod-pipe ( ramrod missing) 52.1cm., 20.5in The barrel and lock are each unmarked. The principal characteristics of the lock place it within the type 2 category of the17th Century English-locks as identified by Graeme Rimer in his study of the firearms at Littlecote House and subsequently expanded upon by Messrs Godwin, Cooper and Spencer in their published survey;

Christie, circa 1760 of neo-regulation type, with rounded barrel formed in three stages with turned mouldings, slotted ramped breech and engraved with a single scroll motif, signed flat lock also decorated with a single scroll ( cock missing), plain stock sparsely decorated with incised panels below the lock, and button trigger and pricker ( not matching, the belt hook, ramrod-pipe and ramrod all missing) 29.2cm., 11.5in This pistol compares closely with another by John Christie, the latter bearing the regimental markings of the 2nd battalion the Royal Highland Regiment (raised 1758, disbanded 1763). a rare scottish heart-butt snaphaunce belt pistol made entirely of steel, dated 1645 with sighted multi-stage barrel formed with four raised mouldings and flared octagonal muzzle, engraved with the date ahead of a slotted ramp at the base of the breech and inset with a small silver rectangle towards the muzzle, bevelled lock with maker's stamp ( rubbed), the pan incorporating a disc fence engraved with an expanded flowerhead and fitted with sliding cover, the cock decorated with a matching flowerhead and the arm of the battery cut with a Celtic serpentine motif ( the sear, tumbler and mainspring all working replacements, presumably early 18th Century), with slender stock cut with simple dentil mouldings along the fore-end, strongly pronounced heart-shaped pommel, slotted small ramrod-pipe, and openwork cubic trigger and pricker en suite with the jaw screw of the cock ( the belt hook, ramrod, one side-nail and the bodkin from the pricker all missing) 40cm., 15.75in The heart-shaped pommel was a regional development of the so-called lemon pommel popularised by Scottish pistol makers within the first quarter of the 17th Century. The heart-shaped pommel appears to have originated exclusively in the centres of production in the Scottish eastern lowlands, such as Inverness, Elgin, Aberdeen and Dundee.

a rare German etched combined halberd and wheel-lock pistol of the guard of Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, Prince archbishop of Salzburg, dated 1589 with broad leaf-shaped blade formed with a full-length central gutter on both sides and extending to a long tang, the latter retained within a sheath at the upper end of the socket, small flat rear fluke and atrophied axe-blade each incorporating a pair of rear-swept lugs, a single two-stage pistol barrel seated within the gutter on one side and retained by a moulded bracket at the base of the blade, a single lock mechanism fitted on the right, including flat plate with bevelled tail, external wheel retained by a chiselled ring formed as addorsed dolphins, sliding pan-cover with button release, chiselled dog formed as a monster's head, and the sear working on a long bar linked internally to a folding trigger at the mid-point of the haft, with tubular socket with prominent collar, original wooden haft carved with a nodular pattern over its length, the upper half octagonal and inset with four long iron straps, and two each carrying a folding trigger locked by a sliding catch, the halberd head decorated over its entire surface with interlaced strapwork patterns filled with flowerheads and foliage on a contrasting blackened ground, involving small espagnolettes together with small demonic and cherubic masks, the date 1589 on both sides towards the point of the blade, and the arms of Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau quartered with those of the Archbishopric of Salzburg in a cartouche on both sides of the axe blade, the socket, pistol barrel and lock mechanism all decorated in continuation of the strapwork patterns, and the haft straps lightly etched over their full length with a series of foliate panels previously gilt ( one pistol barrel and one lock mechanism each missing) the head 52.9cm., 20.875in
