AUDEN W. H.: (1907-1973) British-American poet. A.L.S., Wystan Auden, one page, 4to, Kirchstetten, Austria, 1st October n.y., to Mr. Brusar. Auden states that he had thrown away the envelope of his correspondent's letter 'and then found that you had not put the address on your letter itself, so I hope you will receive this' and continues to express his concern that he has not received the new Sop poems and asks where they were sent to, further writing 'Struga was quite fun. The mistake they make is in inviting too many poets. We have a yearly International Poetry Festival in London, which lasts for three evenings. We invite about ten poets (one year Popa was one) so that each gets a chance to present a fair sample of his work. At Struga there were about 250!'. In concluding Auden congratulates Brusar on his new job, remarking 'So far as I can gather, there is in your country, thank God, no Party line on literature'. A letter of good content and association. VG Branko S. Brusar - Serbo-Croatian translator who, with Auden, translated various poems by Nikola Sop in the early and mid-1960s, some of which appeared in Encounter and others in the Zagreb periodical The Bridge. A volume of the translations, Auden's Sop, was published in 1997. Nikola Sop (1904-1982) Yugoslav poet. Vasko Popa (1922-1991) Serbian poet. The Struga Poetry Evenings is an international festival held annually in Struga, North Macedonia, since 1961. From 1966 the festival has presented a Gold Wreath Award, of which Auden was the recipient in 1971.

Daniel Maclise (1806-1870) Design for Cork Art Exhibition Medal,  1852, sepia ink on paper, Inscribed “Daniel Maclise  Design for Cork Art Exhibition Medal   1852” Depicting an allegorical figure of Hope reaching out to assist Hibernia, this sepia drawing by Daniel Maclise is a significant work of art by the most successful painter to have emerged from Ireland in the nineteenth century. It is also a record of a key event in Cork’s economic and social history. The inscription records that the drawing was submitted by Maclise as a design for a medal to commemorate the Cork Exhibition of 1852. Promoted by John Francis Maguire, the first “Irish Industrial Exhibition” was intended to compensate for the low representation of Irish goods at the Great Exhibition held in London the previous year, and also to boost the economy in a part of Ireland badly affected by the Great Famine. In his Dictionary of Irish Artists, (Vol II, p.562) Walter Strickland mentions two medals struck by William Woodhouse (1805-1878) commemorating the Cork Exhibition; both were designed by Maclise. The first was for the overall exhibition, while the second, for which this is the preparatory drawing, included figures of Hope and Hibernia, and was for the opening of the Fine Art section of the exhibition. Displayed in the Fine Art Hall, in the southern transept of the main exhibition building, were paintings and sculptures by Irish artists, including Stephen Catterson Smith, George Petrie, Frederick William Burton, Francis Danby, John Henry Foley and Michelangelo Hayes. The architect John Benson received a knighthood for designing the huge building that housed the Cork Exhibition. Originally sited near City Hall, this wooden structure was later dismantled and the Fine Art Hall was re-erected as the “Athenaeum” theatre, alongside the old Custom House. It served well for over a century as the Cork Opera House, but was destroyed by fire in the late 1950’s. Born in Cork in 1806, Daniel Maclise was a student at the School of Art established in that city while he was still a young teenager. He went on to study at the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he was an award-winning student. His history paintings were often inspired by literary works, such as the plays of Shakespeare, and he produced many designs for engravings in works of literature, such as Tom Moore’s Irish Melodies, the poems of Alfred Tennyson, and woodcuts for the ‘Christmas books’ of Charles Dickens. Many of Maclise’s friendships centred on the periodical Fraser’s Magazine, for which he produced dozens of lithographed portraits of  leading writers and politicians. However, the high point of his career was reached in the mid-1840’s, when he was commissioned to paint murals for the Houses of Parliament. One of these works, The Marraige of Strongbow and Aoife (1854) is now in the National Gallery of Ireland, but the two largest works, The Meeting of Wellington and Blücher (1861) and The Death of Nelson (1865) are in the Royal Gallery in the House of  Lords. After the death of Prince Albert, Maclise discontinued his work in the Houses of Parliament. Although he strove for, and achieved, success, when Maclise was offered the presidency of the Royal Academy, he refused, and he refused also the offer of a knighthood.

The inscriptions are from Leon to Antonie Schulz, who later became Antonie (Schulz) Lilienfeld.Leon Lilienfeld was born Joseph Leib Leon Lilienfeld to a Jewish family in Podhajce, near L'vov in South Eastern Poland (now the Ukraine), in 1869. Dr Lilienfeld was trained as a physician, but went on to become an eminent scientist and inventor. In his scientific career he produced new derivatives of cellulose and became world-renowned for his inventions, obtaining patents both in Austria and the United States. Leon's wife Antonie Schulz was born in Czechoslovakia in 1876, into a Christian household. As such, Dr Lilienfeld was baptised on April 27th 1914 at the age of 45 and shortly after the couple married, choosing to reside in an affluent area of Vienna. With his wealth, Dr Lilienfeld built a significant collection of Dutch and Flemish old master paintings. The Austrian art historian Gustav Glück published a catalogue of the Lilienfeld pictures in 1917, the 'Portrait of a Man' by Frans Hals serving as the frontispiece to the publication and securing its place as the highlight of the collection. The Lilienfeld's paintings were so well known that they were widely considered a contribution to the cultural holdings of Austria. As early as 1933, the couple apparently planned to relocate to France, as the German art periodical Pantheon reported: An important private collection, which includes a number of most excellent works by the Dutch Masters, such as the 'Portrait of a Man' by Frans Hals ... will be lost to Vienna's art collections in the near future, when the owner, Dr Leon Lilienfeld, moves to Paris. For what reason they planned to relocate to Paris at this time is not known, but they did not leave Austria until shortly after the Anschluss, on March 24, 1938, fleeing to Milan. The couple provided several reasons for their departure, but the most likely explanation was that, because he would be considered Jewish under the Nazi race laws, he did not wish to stay within the borders of what had become part of the Third Reich. Thus the Lilienfeld's had to leave their home and their belongings, including the art collection, in Austria. Tragically Dr Lilienfeld died of pneumonia in Milan on June 6, 1938, leaving his widow as his sole heir. Between leaving Vienna and her husband's demise, the Nazi Decree Regarding the Declaration of Jewish Assets went into effect on April 26, 1938. This law required any Jewish resident of the Reich possessing at least RM 5000 in property to submit an itemised asset registration with the Vermögensverkehrstelle (VVSt), or Property Registration Office within the Ministry of Economics. By 1941 Antonie Lilienfeld had settled in the USA, in the Boston suburb of Winchester, Massachusetts and that was when her battle began with the art collecting officials of the Third Reich, including Adolf Hitler's own agents, to be reunited with her paintings. The story of the Lilienfeld's demonstrates the many ways in which the Nazi regime sought to strip emigrants of their belongings, and in particular desirable works of art.LiteratureReed, Victoria, 'Frans Hals, Hitler, and the Lilienfeld Collection: A Case Study of Expropriation in Austria', published in the Journal of the History of Collections 30(3):pp 471-486 (Boston: Museum of Fine Arts, November 2018)For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

MELA MUTER (MARIA MELANIA MUTERMILCH) (1876-1967)Rue avec clocher d'église signed 'Muter Muter' (lower centre); signed 'Muter' (on the reverse)oil on card72.8 x 54.3cm (28 11/16 x 21 3/8in).Painted in Avignon circa 1930Footnotes:The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Barbara Brus-Malinowska.ProvenanceGalerie Gmurzynska, Cologne, no. 1434.Galerie Bargera, Cologne, no. 15.Anon. sale, Dom Aukcyjny Unicum, Warsaw, 30 November 1997, lot 9.Private collection, London (acquired at the above sale).Exhibited(Possibly) Cologne, Galerie Gmurzynska, Mela Muter, Bilder, Aquarelle und Zeichnungen, 20 November 1965 - 10 January 1966.Mela Muter is regarded as the first professional Jewish female painter in Poland. Largely self-taught, she formed part of a rich coterie of Polish artists – among them Moïse Kisling – who relocated to Paris, attracted to its civil freedoms and bohemian lifestyle. There she developed a highly individualistic style resting upon a diversity of Modern and historical influences. At the time she painted Rue avec clocher d'église, Muter had suffered a slew of tragedies, including the deaths of her father and son, her close friend Rainer Maria Rilke, and her partner Raymond Lefebvre, a social activist who died under mysterious circumstances at the Communist International in Moscow in 1920. She sought sanctuary in a newly optimistic artistic style. In the present work, Muter evokes the town's quiet splendour with lively brushstrokes and glowing colours that bespeak the joy of observation. In its twisting amalgamation of curvilinear forms – echoing the Cubist leanings of her friends Albert Gleizes and Gino Severini – the city street seems to breathe and move with a life of its own. The spatial distortion and rushing verticality of the buildings, along with the splashes of chromatic intensity in the teal door and lime-green accents of the tenement façade, betray her admiration of El Greco's Spanish cityscapes. The force of the bright afternoon ripples through the scene, the sky rendered with broken strokes of vivid azure, criss-crossed with powerlines that evoke an aura around the church tower. Thick textures abound in her expressive handling of oil paint across the dappled surface of her support, as she leaves portions unpainted to denote light, in the style of the Fauves. Muter became immediately successful upon her move to Paris, exhibiting regularly at the Salons, thence gaining international renown. She painted portraits of central artistic figures, including Ambroise Vollard, Diego Rivera and Erik Satie. Throughout her life she remained staunchly devoted to social activism, creating pacifist illustrations for the leftist periodical Clarté, and founding a society for the protection of disadvantaged people at the Polish borders on the Oder and the Nysa. In 1965, she donated a significant amount of her collection to the Galerie Gmurzynska in Cologne. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The Open Book 116. - Einzige Ausgabe der sehr seltenen, effektvollen, sowjetischen Propaganda-Dokumentation von Eliezer "El" Lissitzky (1890-1941) über die sozialistische Industrialisierung. "Following his success with the 'USSR Builds for Socialism', El Lissitzky was commissioned to design a multi-volume report along similiar lines for the Seventh Congress of Soviets in 1935, an interim review of the progress of Stalin's second Five-Year Plan. In tone and content Socialist Industry closely follows the style of the magazine 'USSR in Construction', and El Lissitzky and his wife Sophie Küppers (who had become his close collaborator by this time) took many of the more radical design ideas they had conceived for the periodical and developed them in book form. The result is a cornucopia of graphic design and photomontage, arguably the high point both of Lissitzky's book designing career and of the Soviet propaganda photobook ... It is the couple's most cinematic photobook, the result of their theoretical discussions on the techniques of montage with the film-maker Dziga Vertov. In no other book is the imagery quite so brilliantly piled up, one picture upon the other, the ideas constantly inventive and dazzling. It is as if Lissitzky found the normal form of the book page so restricting that he was compelled to push beyond its boundaries at every turn" (Parr/Badger S. 160). - "The Industry of Socialism is one of El Lissitzky’s masterpieces. Everything in the book, beginning with the cover image, speaks of the triumph of Soviet Industry." (Karasik-Heiting). [Newton, Isaac] - The Royal Society The Philosophical Transactions and collections, to the end of the year MDCC, abridged... (vols 1-3) by John Lowthorp. The fifth edition; (vols 4-5) by Henry Jones. The third edition; (vols 6-7) by John Eames and John Martyn; (vols 8-11) by John Martyn. London: W. Innys and others, 1749; vols 6-7: J. Brotherton and others, 1736; vols 8-9: W. Innys and others, 1747; vols 10-11: Lockyer Davis and Charles Reymers, 1756, 11 volumes, 4to, 309 (of 317) folding engraved plates, 2 (unnumbered) folding tables, contemporary calf, morocco lettering pieces, occasional light spotting, head of a few spines slightly rubbedNote: Note: The Abridgements cover the Transactions from their beginning in 1665 to 1750, but in fact the most important papers are substantially complete. Chapter III of volume 1 is entitled 'Opticks' and includes all of Newton's founding papers on the subject as well as the debate generated thereby, commencing with the famous 'A New Theory About Light & Colours' of 1672. In his biography of Newton, Michael White notes that Newton's Opticks, published in 1704, was based largely on the manuscripts composed some thirty years earlier and published in the Philosophical Transactions. Further papers on optics appear in subsequent volumes. 'If all the books in the world except the Philosophical Transactions were destroyed, it is safe to say that the foundations of physical science would remain unshaken, and that the vast intellectual progress of the last two centuries would be largely, although incompletely, recorded' (Huxley, quoted in Norman). It would be impossible to overestimate the historical importance of the Philosophical Transactions, which was first published and financed by Henry Oldenburg from March 1664-65 for the new Royal Society (founded in 1662), and, following his death, published by the Society itself. Nearly every contemporary British scientist and numerous foreign scientists contributed extensively to the Transactions in its first hundred years. Contributors include Thorbern Bergman, Edward Berkeley, Boerhaave, Boscovitch, Borelli, Boyle, Celsius, Euler, Fahrenheit, Ferguson, Flamstead, Franklin, Hales, Halley, Harvey, Hevelius, Hooke, Huygens, Leeuwenhoek, Leibnitz, Locke, Malpighi, Morgagni, Newton, Petty, Ray, Redi, Steno, Swammerdam, Wren, and numerous others. The Belgica set out, under the leadership of Adrien de Gerlache, from Antwerp at the end of August 1897, on what was 'one of the most fascinating of the early Antarctic expeditions and also probably the least comfortable one to have taken part in for all concerned' (Cool Antarctica website). By March 1898 the ship was stuck in the ice, forcing the crew to remain in the Antarctic over winter (including 63 days of total darkness) before eventually escaping the ice in February the following year.In the face of such adversity the expedition still managed to gather an important collection of scientific data (which had been the expedition's main goal), hugely beneficial for the following voyages to Antarctica, including that led by Roald Amundsen, who served on Belgica as first mate. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
