JAMES CROMAR WATT (1862-1940) RARE GOLD AND TURQUOISE BROOCH, CIRCA 1905 with finely enamelled bands of iridescent green, with silver foiled backing, enclosing gold wirework scroll borders, the centre with large turquoise matrix and further turquoise bead drop 3cm wide Note. James Cromar Watt was born in Aberdeen. He worked in precious metals, developed particular skills in the ancient techniques of gold granulation and translucent foiled enamelling. His work was exhibited in Turin in 1902 and was illustrated in the Art Journal periodical of the time. Some of his pieces were strongly influenced by the enamel work of Phoebe Traquair and some of it was designed in association with the painter and stained glass artist, Douglas Strachan. His work was predominantly in the collection of the Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museum. A gold and enamel necklace by Cromar Watt was sold by Lyon & Turnbull, 6 April 2016, lot 237.

An accompanying document entitled 'Explanation of the Index' gives a detailed plate count up to volume 25, whilst Todd's 1965 bibliography of the magazine (also included), has been studied and annotated in accordance with the collection. The majority of volumes have been bound in tan buckram with red morocco labels by Bayntun of Bath. The collection was started by Ralph Milbank Hudson II of the Friarage, Yarm, in County Durham, MP for Sunderland from 1918-1922. It was passed by descent to Major Paul Payne as a belated wedding present, due to his love of books. Major Payne and his wife sourced many of the missing elements from the set, and arranged for the books to be re-bound. In 1966 Major and Mrs Payne received a visit from a bibliographer of the Gentleman's Magazine who was looking to publish a replica of the work. He had been advised that this collection had one of the most complete sets of plates and illustrations to be found.

'The Yellow Book - An Illustrated Quarterly', complete in 13 volumes (1894-97). Published in London by Elkin Mathews & John Lane, 8vo cloth bindings, illustrated by various artists including Aubrey Beardsley. A leading journal of the British 1890s, which contained a wide range of literary and artistic genres: poetry, short stories, essays, book illustrations, portraits and reproductions of paintings. Beardsley was its first art editor and has been credited with the idea of the yellow cover, with its association with illicit French fiction of the period. The periodical lent its name to the "Yellow Nineties", referring to the decade of its operation.

HMS Challenger embarked from Portsmouth on 21 December 1872 under the direction of the Scottish professor Charles Wyville Thomson and his Canadian-born assistant and naturalist John Murray. This was the first time that physicists, chemists and biologists collaborated with expert navigators to map the sea. During the four-year voyage they circumnavigated the globe, travelling 69,0000 nautical miles across the Atlantic, Pacific and Antarctic oceans. They sounded the ocean bottom to a depth of 26,850 feet, discovered 715 new genera and 4,717 new species of ocean life forms, including many deep-sea specimens. Among their discoveries were many of the fish and marine creatures thought at that time to be of legend. Numerous specimens from the voyage are on view in one of the largest collections in the Natural History Museum. This fifty volume, 29,500-page report took twenty-three years to compile and publish. It includes many observations of other natural history subjects including faunae of the countries visited. The following is a selection of some of the papers included in the volumes: Birds, by P.L. William Kitchen Parker FRS FRMS (1823-1890) was an English physician, zoologist and comparative anatomist. He became Hunterian Professor of Anatomy and Physiology in The College of Surgeons of England; elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1865, awarded the Royal Medal in 1866. London Magazine (The): and Monthly Chronologer, vol.VIII-X & XXV-XLIV, 23 vol., vol.8-10 with engraved title vignette, the rest engraved frontispieces and vignette titles and woodcut vignette at beginning of each issue, numerous engraved plates and maps, many folding, a few maps hand-coloured (Cuba, North America, Philippines), some a little shaved at fore-edge, occasional spotting or browning but generally clean, hand-coloured map of North America in vol.32 torn with most detached, one leaf in vol.35 torn and repaired, vol.34 with ?additional folding engraved map of Africa loosely inserted (torn and defective, not apparently called for), contemporary half calf (all but vol.8 mottled calf), red roan labels, rubbed, some spine ends a little worn or chipped but a handsome run, 8vo, for T.Astley, 1739-41 & 1756-75; sold as a periodical, not subject to return ⁂ Originally a political magazine founded in 1732 as an alternative to the Tory-based Gentleman's Magazine this also included contemporary events at home and abroad, literary reviews, articles on scientific and medical discoveries, births, marriages, deaths and stock prices. Of particular interest in the present run are the years covering the Seven Years War 1756-63 with many maps and plans of North America (including maps of New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, Montreal, New Orleans etc., plates of the taking of Quebec and views of New York, Philadelphia and Charleston), as well as Pondicherry, Bengal and the East Indies. There are also several maps of Britain and Ireland, many by Thomas Kitchin, plans of London and campaigns in Europe, plus reports and plates of subjects as diverse as the massacre at Glencoe, the Foundling Hospital, the new Blackfriars bridge, the new state coach of George III, the shadows over Britain during the solar eclipse of 1764, a fire engine, discoveries at Herculaneum, and zoological plates of a sperm whale, elephant, an armadillo and the Beast of Gevaudan in France which was rumoured to have devoured over 80 people.

India Sikh large scale engraving of the Maharajah Ranjit Singh in Court 1858 a superb engraving of the lion of Punjab Maharajah Ranjit Singh in Court, within a 19th century French periodical 'L'Illustration, Journal Universel' dated 15 Mai1858 and titled 'La Cour de Runjeet-Sing a Lahore', measuring 53x73cm. A truly magnificent scene of Sikhs, Sikh nobles, Akali Nihungs, Ranjit Singh, court officials, the document is in good condition Note: This engraving is based on the famous painting of the Lahore court by Hungarian artist August Schoefft now in the Lahore Museum in Pakistan. This is one of the most detailed scenes that portrays the magnificent Sikh empire at its height.

The West End Review, [1898], colour lithographic publicity flyer with printed text and reviews to centrefold, horizontal fold, 36 x 25.5 cm (14 x 10 ins), together with an accompanying 8 pp. stapled booklet of press reviews for the West End Review, small 8vo, both loosely inserted and preserved in Souvenir: Julius Caesar, Her Majesty's Theatre, Designed, Edited and Published for Mr Tree, by the West-End Review, 1898, colour and black & white illustrations, original printed boards in glassine dust jacket, torn without loss, small folio Mucha/Henderson 83. Reade 22. Mucha designed a poster for this magazine in 1897 which was one of his largest lithographic works, forming a nine-sheet poster measuring 10 feet by 7 feet. The periodical was published between June 1897 and September 1899 and this image was used for a number of the magazine's covers. A good, crisp and fine impression. (3)
