His work on the Non-Euclidean geometry and mathematics 'for the most part paralleled that of other European mathematicians. It is, for example, worth noting that in his algebra Lobachevsky suggested a method for separating roots of equation by their repeated squaring, a method coincident with that suggested by Dandelin in 1826 and by Gräffe in 1837' (DSB). Tom of Finland (Finnish, 1920-1991)Untitled ('Happy Couple')signed 'Tom' (lower left) graphite on paper 30.5 x 22.5cm (12 x 8 7/8in).Executed in 1974Footnotes:ProvenanceBob Mizer (1922-1992), founder of Athletic Model Guild (AMG)bequeathed to his heir Wayne Stanleyacquired from him c.1997 (with some hundred-plus original drawings published in Physique Pictorial by other great American physique artists) by Miles Chapman, formerly a senior editor at Vanity FairLiteraturePhysique Pictorial, vol. 26, December 1974 (illustrated as back cover)Tim Blanks, 'Profanation of Our Joys' in Another Man, Autumn/Winter 2017 (illustrated p.160)Tom of Finland (real name Touko Laaksonen) came to the attention of American, and indeed global, audiences in 1957 when his drawings first appeared in Physique Pictorial, the iconic magazine published in Los Angeles by Bob Mizer. Mizer had founded his photography studio and publishing house, Athletic Model Guild (AMG), in 1945; within two years, he was convicted of distributing obscene material in the form of black and white photographs of young bodybuilders wearing 'posing straps' made by his mother. He continued his work nonetheless.Physique Pictorial, which ran from 1951 to 1990, was packed with Mizer's photographs of soldiers, sailors, hopeful actors, and later on pure street hustlers - each accompanied by light-hearted biographies: Jim is 'an active gymnast... [he] plays the piano and does tricks (magician tricks, that is)'. In addition, the periodical included Tom of Finland's extraordinary run of drawings, usually in sets of six per theme. They functioned as 'teen photo stories' which Mizer published and then sold as photographic copies to his ever-growing readership.Together, Tom and Mizer codified a new form of male erotica, exploding the charged sexuality under the surface of American life. In Tom's extravagantly romantic images - a potent mix of exaggerated physicality and emotional truth - bikers handle attempted thieves a little too roughly, a strapping TV repairman is cornered against the set by its owner, and the sailors taking a novice to a tattoo parlour are all high-tensile teeth and smiles. It was precisely Tom who developed a new set of subcultural codes (leatherman, cowboy, biker, cop), turning the workwear and uniforms of blue-collar America into a set of cross-cultural fantasy signals that have become globally recognised - permeating the imagery of Robert Mapplethorpe, the Village People, and Queen. On the back cover of the December 1974 issue of Physique Pictorial was this rare and fine finished drawing from Tom's golden age, part of Mizer's 'Set S', where a standing nude makes a possessive/protective gesture to his crouching friend, both regarding the onlooker, direct but enigmatic. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

RARE An unusual Victorian bound music book autographed by some very wellknown Victorian Entertainers including Fred Robson (1821 1864), Edwin Pearce Christy (1815 1862) and Eliza Cook (1818 1889). This is a Victorian hard bound book containing 22 popular music scores. The opening score is The Postman's Knock Song and this starts with a stunning colour title page (please see photographs). The book has a number of these beautiful title pages at the start of the music scores and it is unusual to find them still in a Victorian music book today as most were cut out and framed in the past. The title page for "Vilikens and his Dinah. Sung by Mr F Robson in the Musical Farce of The Wandering Minstrel" is autographed by Fred Robson (1821 1864) born Thomas Brownbill he was an English comedian, actor and ballad singer. During his acting career, he combined outstanding comic gifts with the power of moving an audience to a sense of tragedy or pathos. He was well known for performing as a Cockney streetsinger, in The Wandering Minstrel, a oneact farce by Henry Mayhew, performing the role from around 1852 with revivals in many towns and at the Olympic Theatre in the West End of London until not long before his death in 1864. The title page for "Christy's Minstrels I'm off to Charlestown" is autographed by Edwin Pearce Christy (1815 1862) was an American composer, singer, actor, stage producer and was the founder of the blackface minstrel group Christy's Minstrels. He was an influential person in the history of Minstrelsy and theatre in American history. His career in minstrelsy began in New York in the 1840s and from there he became a sensation. He and six other performers performed around the country in blackface and eventually he began composing his own minstrel songs and sketches. In 1855 he retired as a performer, but he continued to be involved in the theatre as he managed his original group Christy's Minstrels. Edwin Christy committed suicide during the American Civil War for fear of money troubles. The title page for "Spring, Spring, Beautiful Spring" composed by Eliza Cook is autographed by Eliza Cook (1818 1889) was an English author and poet associated with the Chartist movement. She was a proponent of political freedom for women, and believed in the ideology of selfimprovement through education, something she called "levelling up." This made her hugely popular with the workingclass public in both England and America. Her poem The Old Armchair (1838) made her a household name for a generation, both in England and the United States. In that year, she published Melaia and Other Poems. From 1849 to 1854 she wrote, edited, and published Eliza Cook's Journal, a weekly periodical she described as one of "utility and amusement. The full list of the 22 music scores bound in the book are as follow: The Postman's Knock Song, Campton Races, Britannia The Pride of the Ocean, Will You Come to My Mountain Home, The Wishing Gate, What Are The Wild Waves Saying, Bonnie Dundee, Oh Charming May, Hearts and Homes (signed but unidentified), Shells of Ocean, Ever of Thee, Goodbye Sweetheart Goodbye, Vilikens and his Dinah, I'm off to Charlestown, Spring Spring Beautiful Spring, The Scotch Polka, The Royal English March, Annen Polka, The Albion Schottisch, The Royal Irish Quadrilles (signed but unidentified), Polka Elegante and La Reine Des Roses. This is unusual book with an unusual combination of autographs making it rare and it shows a few signs of wear but when you consider its age, it is in remarkably good condition, approximately 14 inches x 10.5 inches and 1 inch thick. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99
