CURTIS, WILLIAMTHE BOTANICAL MAGAZINE; OR, FLOWER-GARDEN DISPLAYED In which the most Ornamental Foreign Plants, cultivated in the Open Ground, the Green-House, and the Stove, are accurately represented in their natural colours. London: Stephen Couchman for W. Curtis, 1793-1801 [but plates actually dated 1786-1801]. First edition, first issue, volumes 1-15, 8vo, 567 finely hand-coloured engraved plates, and 1 plain plate, contemporary mottled calf, gilt line border round sides, gilt tooled spines, double black lettering labels, sprinkled edges, armorial bookplates of Ralph RiddellNote: The Botanical Magazine is "the oldest current scientific periodical of its kind with coloured illustrations in the world... in the beauty of production and high standard of its contributions it can claim a unique place" (Patrick Synge. Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society (1948), p.73)Sydenham Edwards did most of the original drawings, engraved by Sansom, for the early volumes of the magazine. All of the illustrations were drawn from the living plant and "coloured as near to nature, as the imperfections of colouring will admit." Dunthorne calls the Curtis "a delightful work pictorially, never excelled as a periodical, most carefully coloured and a source of lasting interest and information." (p.190).The colouring of the plates in this set of the highest quality. The colourist took enormous pains to highlight each flower with subtle shades of colour rather than allow the engraving to designate tone and depth.Though the title-pages date from 1793-1801, the plates are dated from March 1786. According to Stafleu the first edition is determined by the date of the plates: "The plates in the early volumes are dated. These dates can usually be accepted as the dates of publication." (Stafleu. Taxonomic Literature, p.92-93. Hunt 689; Nissen BBI 2350; Dunthorne 99; Henry III, 472; Sitwell. Great Flower Books, 83-84; Blung 184-189) A very clean finely bound set.

From The Master's HandNo. 3 of 8 Copies OnlyJoyce (James). De Honni-Soit a Mal-y-Chance. Mesures, 15 Janvier 1936. [French translation of Joyce's essay From a banned writer to a banned singer,a tribute to the singer John Sullivan]. Sm qto, 9pp, stapled (centre pages loose) in printed paper covers, French-style glassine wrapper, probably original. No. 3 of only eight numbered copies (offprints from the periodical Mesures) on stamped Alfa Navarre paper. Signed by Joyce on f.f.e.p. and extensively corrected in ink in his hand, about ten separate corrections, mostly to spelling but including one insertion of an extra word. Staples slightly rusted with a little staining, but in excellent condition, EXCESSIVELY RARE. 'A titre de Kerryosité, dis, a quoi rime un Sullivan?'Joyce first met the Irish-born tenor John Sullivan or O'Sullivan in late 1929, at the urging of his brother Stanislaus. Sullivan was Cork-born, like Joyce's father, and had established himself at the Paris Opera. Joyce was overcome with enthusiasm when he heard him sing there. Joyce was himself a promising singer in his youth, and for several years he devoted much time and energy to promoting Sullivan among his friends, and trying to secure better opportunities for him. He claimed that Sullivan's career had been held back by the jealousy of others [see Ellmann p. 619-21]. His tribute From a banned writer to a banned singer was first published in the New Statesman and Nation, 27 Feb.1932 [S&C C81]. This French translation by Arnold Petitjean (stated to have been reviewed by Joyce) was published in the French magazine Mesures, 15 Jan. 1936 [S&C D34]. Just eight numbered offprints of the translation were issued for Joyce and signed by him. Of the eight copies, the present item appears to be the only one surviving with manuscript corrections by Joyce. There is a copy in the NLI, without the corrections. We have not traced the other copies, and it may be that they have not survived.Almost certainly a unique Joyce item, extensively corrected in the writer's hand, and testifying to an enthusiasm which preoccupied Joyce for several years in the 1930s.  DARWIN CHARLES: (1809-1882) English Naturalist. A.L.S., Ch. Darwin, one page, 8vo, Bassett, Southampton, 26th January n.y., to a gentleman, presumably a publisher. Darwin asks for a copy to be sent to Down, further instructing his correspondent 'but mark outside “not to be forwarded.” for I shall not return home for a week's time'. A single ink stroke runs vertically through the centre of the majority of the letter, not touching the signature and in no way detracting from the legibility. Lightly mounted to card, with a small light stain to the lower edge and a very minor area of paper loss to the upper left corner, neither of which affect the text or signature. About VG   Darwin's correspondent was most likely employed at the publishers Williams and Norgate who specialised in British and foreign scholarly and scientific literature. They published the periodical Natural History Review as well as works by Thomas Henry Huxley and Herbert Spencer. The ink annotation on the present letter, indicating that Darwin's request had been actioned, is typical of their practice.   Bassett was the location of the home of William Erasmus Darwin (1839-1914), the eldest son of Charles and Emma Darwin and the subject of psychological studies made by his father. Darwin was particularly fond of his son, describing him as 'a prodigy of beauty & intellect' at his birth.   The present letter does not appear to be recorded at the University of Cambridge's Darwin Correspondence Project although seventeen other letters from Darwin to Williams and Norgate are listed, dating between 1860-80.

Darwin (Charles). Observations on the Parallel Roads of Glen Roy, and of other parts of Lochaber in Scotland, with an attempt to prove that they are of marine origin, [extracted from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London], 1839, comprising pp. 39-81 of the periodical publication, engraved map and lithographed plate, endpaper hinges repaired, contemporary diced calf, rebacked, slim 4toFreeman 1653. From the Philosophical Transactions, volume 129. "The evidence which Darwin obtained in South America and in atolls for changes of sea level was later responsible for leading him into error. In 1838 in attempting to explain the Parallel Roads of Glen Roy in Scotland, Darwin imagined that the land had sunk by over 1,000 feet and that the so-called roads were marine beaches. In 1862 it was shown by T.F. Jamieson that the glaciers of Ben Nevis had dammed back the waters of a lake, the level of which dropped twice as outlets were formed, and that the roads were lake beaches" (DSB). Darwin later wrote "my paper was one long gigantic blunder from beginning to end".(Qty: 1)
