LEMAIRE, Charles (1800-1871). Le Jardin Fleuriste, journal general des progres et des interets horticoles et botaniques. Ghent: F. & E. Gyselinck, 1851-1854. 4 volumes, 8A (240 x 157 mm). Half-titles. 405 lithographic plates (of which 403 are printed in color and finished by hand, occasionally heightened with gum-arabic, 26 are folding, 2 are uncolored folding plates), numerous illustrations, some full-page. (Some spotting or offsetting, a few quires becoming loose or disbound.) Contemporary calf-backed boards (some wear, hinges starting). FIRST EDITION. This fine periodical has a definite preference for the exotic: there are about 60 orchids shown, a similar number of bromeliads and many other plants suitable only for the hot-house in northern Europe. There is some confusion about the number of plates, caused by the double-numbering of most of the folding plates. Nissen calls for 430 plates, but Stafleu and Cowan record a number of double-numbered plates which are the folding plates in the present copy. DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870).   Oliver Twist; or, the Parish Boy's Progress. By "Boz". London: Richard Bentley, 1838.  3 volumes, 8vo (192 x 118 mm). Half-titles to vols. I&II with advertisements verso, publisher's advertisements vols.I&III. Etched frontispiece to each volume and 21 plates after George Cruikshank. (Some minor offsetting or spotting.) 20th-century polished calf gilt, red and green morocco lettering-pieces gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut, stamp-signed by Zaehnsdorf (some minor rubbing). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST ENGLISH NOVEL TO FEATURE A YOUNG CHILD AS A PROTAGONIST, with "Boz" on the title-page and the "Fireside" plate. When Bentley decided to publish Olive or Twist in book format before completing its completion in Bentley's Miscellany magazine, Cruikshank had to rush to complete the illustrated plates.   Dickens didn't review the plates until the eve of publication, and he objected to the "Fireside" plate (present here) which depicted Oliver at Rose Maylie's knee with Harry and Mrs. Maylie gathered around the living room fire.   Cruikshank revised the illustration, using the same title ("Rose Maylie and Oliver"), to show Rose and Oliver standing before Oliver's mother's church memorial.   The altered plate was used in later issues of Oliver Twist in book form, as well as in the conclusion of the periodical run.   Eckel, p.59-60; Gimbel A27; Smith I:4.For condition inquiries please contact lesliewinter@hindmanauctions.com

Lot 112

SUN YAT-SENAutograph letter signed ('Yours very sincerely/ Sun Yat Sen) to Mabel Cantlie ('My Dear Mrs Cantlie'), in English, expressing thanks for the many letters which 'brought me much comfort and happiness', and giving news that his former Private Secretary and later editor of the China Republican, 'Mr. Fraser', who had previously 'abandoned the idea of working for the cause', considering it a lost one, had after all left for England from Singapore, apparently reinvigorated by the enthusiasm of Sun Yat-sen's people there, and sensing 'that the people in China are getting ready for something'; explaining that he had raised the funds to finance Fraser's trip to London, Sun goes on to ask for Mrs Cantlie's valued help regarding Fraser ('Will you please render him the friendly support if you think he is still loyal to the cause. I am writing you these confidential facts about my former Secretary and without any reserve knowing exactly how you will take it..'), and asks her to pass on this news to Mr Diosy in France, an incomplete letter from whom is included in the lot (see footnote), 4 pages, 4to, with autograph envelope marked 'Via Siberia!!' and addressed to 'Mrs Cantlie/ 14a Harley Street/ London W./ England', 26 Reinanzaka, Tokyo, 17 March 1914Footnotes:'THE PEOPLE IN CHINA ARE GETTING READY FOR SOMETHING': SUN YAT-SEN RECOMMENDS MA SU, ALIAS 'MR FRASER', TO MABEL CANTLIE - AND PREPARES FOR THE FUTURE REPUBLIC OF CHINA.The letter was written during Sun Yat-sen's second period of exile in Japan, this time following the failed Second Revolution of July 1913, when Sun and the Kuomintang (KMT) military forces tried to overthrow President Yuan Shikai, who had plotted the assassinations of Song Jiaoren and Chen Qimei, founders of the Kuomintang. The KMT was dissolved, and Sun was forced to flee to Japan, where he began to seek to rebuild his support base and broaden international acknowledgement of his cause. It was at this time that Sun began to develop his vision for the world's first socialist republic, and three months after the date of this letter he established the Chinese Revolutionary Party. The following year, which marked the beginning of the chaotic 'Warlord Era' in China, both Sun and Xu Shichang were to be proclaimed President of the Republic of China.Ma Su (or Soo, 'Mr Fraser') attended St Joseph College in Hong Kong and in 1911 he joined Sun Yat-sen as his Private Secretary in Shanghai. He took part in the attack on the Kiangnan Arsenal with Chen Chi-mei during the First Revolution, and afterwards he accompanied Sun to Nanking in the capacity of English Secretary. The following year he was entrusted with the editorship of Sun's new weekly English-language organ, The China Republican, which was set up in Shanghai to argue the case against Yuan Shikai. The paper was closed by the authorities of the French Concession on 6 November 1913 on account of its extreme views on politics, whereupon Ma Su was deported to Singapore, stating his intention to abandon politics and go into business there.Nonetheless, it was in Singapore that Ma Su underwent the change of heart referred to in the letter. After a year in London (where he presumably met the Cantlies), he went on to study at Columbia and New York universities, playing an important role as Sun Yat-sen's man in the United States from 1911 to 1922, and serving as a special delegate of the Kuomintang at the Washington Conference in 1921-22. He also edited the New York periodical, China Review, and at the same time turned his hand to dealing in Chinese art.Included in the lot is the second half of a 4-page letter from Alfred Diosy telling the Cantlies that Sun 'is taking precautions to ensure complete success this time! Let us imitate his hopeful patience and wait steadfastly for the Great Day... by increasingly holding up Yuan's Dictatorship to the contempt it deserves...'. Diosy (1856-1923) founded the Japan Society in 1891, wrote several books including The New Far East, and was also a close friend of Sun. According to James Cantlie, 'No one is in a better position to declare his opinion than Mr. Diosy, for he has... alone enjoyed with my wife and myself the privilege of an intimate acquaintance with the great reformer'.Provenance: Sir James and Mabel Cantlie; and thence by descent to the present owner. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A Collection', Bernard Shapero Catalogue, 1989, 16], 4to, Ward, Lock & Co., 1891Footnotes:'LEAVE MY BOOK, I BEG YOU, TO THE IMMORTALITY THAT IT DESERVES': THE SIGNED LARGE PAPER EDITION OF WILDE'S MASTERPIECE, HIS ONLY NOVEL. The deluxe edition was published some three months after the trade edition, which itself was preceded by the shorter novella length version which had appeared the year before, in the July 1890 issue of the American periodical Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. The paper's editor, J. M. Stoddart, had removed some 500 words without Wilde's permission, but nonetheless its publication caused a great outcry from some reviewers. Wilde vigorously defended its merits in the press, but made further revisions to the text for the 1891 edition, whilst adding the famous Preface which was effectively a literary and artistic manifesto written as a rebuttal to the criticisms. This copy has a variant form of the title-page with a full stop after the word 'Gray'; the full stop is not present in Mason's reproduction of the title-page but is seemingly often found.Provenance: Private French collection. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Everett (Leslie F., British, early 20th century] "The Heroes", pen and black ink over pencil, blue wash, signed and dated, with inscription underneath, ruled ink border, 360 x 270 mm (14 1/8 x 10 3/4 in), under glass, minor surface dirt, modern Dutch 17th-century style frame, 1914.⁂ Although no biographical information is known about Leslie F. Everett (of Willesden Green, London), he was an accomplished illustrator who worked in the prevailing style of Rackham, Hassall, Dulac, Edmund J Sullivan, Housman and the classic Edwardian periodical artists of the period. This 'propaganda' cartoon possibly alludes, albeit obliquely, to the Ottoman Empire's entry to WW1 through their surprise attack on Russia's Black Sea coast on 29 October 1914, with Russia responding by declaring war on 5 November 1914.

MORGAN AND SANDERS; A REGENCY MAHOGANY CAMPAIGN SOFA, CIRCA 1810With brass inlaid lyre arm terminals and turned supports, 198cm wide; 92cm highProvenance: By repute acquired from The Kepples Head Hotel, Portsmouth, where it was recorded in the 19th Century hotel inventory. The Kepples Head is located 100 yards from the main naval base gate and was regularly used by Naval Officers and Diplomats, prior to embarkation from Portsmouth. This campaign or metamorphic sofa has been associated to the work of Morgan & Sanders (1801-1820), who alongside Thomas Butler and William Pocock were the leading proponents of ‘patent’ furniture in the Regency era. The designs of which enabled the elite army and navy officers to travel in relative luxury. Established in 1801, Morgan & Sanders’  elaborate trade card promoted their business as: ‘ Manufacturers of their New Invented IMPERIAL DINING TABLES & PORTABLE CHAIRS, Improved Sofa Beds, Chair Beds, four Post & Tent Bedsteads, Furniture, Bedding &c. complete at their Upholstery & Cabinet Ware Rooms, Nos. 16 & 17 Catherine Street, Strand’.In 1805 Morgan & Sanders re-branded their premises as ‘Trafalgar House’, taking advantage of the death of the naval hero and their client, Lord Nelson. Morgan & Sanders had supplied some furniture to Nelson’s house, Merton in Surrey and collapsible pieces were used to furnish HMS Victory.Interestingly, Morgan & Sanders advertised their designs in R. Ackermann’s monthly periodical, The Repository of Arts, from 1809 to 1815, who’s print shop on the Strand was located yards from the Morgan & Sanders premises. An upper floor is illustrated in No. 8 August 1st, 1809, and shows a range of furniture, including lyre back chairs. The lyre was a popular instrument among aristocratic gentil amateur lady musicians and imbued with illusions of Classical significance.Condition report: Overall in good condition. The frame is structurally quite sound. The sides ‘wobble’ when stronger pressure is applied. The back is removed by releasing a square screw which is concealed beneath the fabric at the top corners of the back. The arms are released by unscrewing the same type of square headed screw located to the edge of the underside, beneath the arms. The frame has been repaired, repolished and tidied at some point , probably when it was re-upholstered. The one side of the lyre is slight loose (right hand side). Some brass inlay a little loose to both lyre sides with some pinging up. Chip to the back leg foot, inside castor. Various other knocks, dents, and signs of wear commensurate with use and age. The sofa as not been ‘collapsed’ / deconstructed. The upholstery is dirty and dusty. Discolouration in areas commensurate with use and age. Please see additional photographs www.bellmans.co.uk
