Offered from the Cooke Collection, this smart 1-tonne drop-side truck has been in their ownership since 1977. An older restored example, it's running and driving well and ready to be used. Pure nostalgia.Morris Motors had offered a commercial derivative of its first passenger car, the Oxford, prior to World War I and, by the 1920s, the company wanted to expand its model range into heavier commercial vehicles. In 1924 Morris Commercial Cars Ltd. was formed when William Morris took over the factory of axle manufacturer, E.G. Wrigley & Co. Ltd, in Soho, Birmingham.By 1938, Morris Commercial was a household name, building vehicles for commercial use in a variety of shapes and sizes. On of the most successful was the 1,800cc four-cylinder 1-Tonne Truck, bought in their thousands by small and medium sized businesses. This rather smart example was purchased for the Cooke Collection in 1977 and restored by the Collection's in-house team during the 1980s. It's finished in traditional coach painted Brown with a green canvas 'tilt', sits on yellow artillery wheels and is fitted with a tow-bar. The drop-sides have been sign-written 'The Coach House - Vintage Museum and Workshops' and the tidy interior is finished in red vinyl. It's been on display in the Museum for many years enjoying the occasional trip out to a show. We understand that it's running and driving well and is ideal for Historic Commercial Vehicle runs and events. A must-have for any pre-war or veteran car collector, the genesis of motorised transport. A painstakingly accurate and hugely well-respected replica by John Bentley Engineering in fantastic condition.Discussions about the most important motorcars in history are frequently inconclusive and inevitably never-ending, usually including the Austin Seven, the Morris Minor, Volkswagen's Beetle, the Austin-Healy Sprite, Jaguar's XK120 and E-Type, the F40, McLaren F1, the Bugatti Veyron, Ford’s GT40 - the list goes on. However, the simple fact of the matter is that without the 1886 Carl Benz Patent-Motorwagen, arguably none of those cars would have existed. Many contraptions can lay a claim to the title of ‘first automobile’, yet historians generally agree that the Benz Patent-Motorwagen is the first such machine to have achieved production success. Completed in 1885 by German inventor Karl Benz and patented the following year, approximately 25 were built between 1886 and 1893. This small first step would lead to the company now known as Mercedes-Benz.With its delicate tricycle configuration and tiller steering, the Patent-Motorwagen appears primitive, yet the design is surprisingly sophisticated. Its lightweight, 954cm3, horizontally-mounted single-cylinder engine featured electronic ignition and produced 0.75 bhp with output being fed to a belt drive through a large, horizontal flywheel at the rear, finally reaching the rear wheels via dual chain drives.Although the priceless original Patent-Motorwagen is retained by Mercedes-Benz, John Bentley Engineering built a series of exacting recreations. The most authentic replicas of their kind, they are accurate in every way—although unlike the original, these were designed to run on white gas, rather than the archaic petroleum product called ligroin. This example, painted in green, was acquired by our vendor a few years ago to nestle nicely into their eclectic mix of the oldest to the most modern motorcars. Such was the quality of Mr. Bentley’s work that approximately 100 of these Patent-Motorwagen recreations (painted in black) were commissioned by Mercedes-Benz Classic around the turn of the millennium, a testament to the quality of his craftsmanship. After completion by Bentley Engineering, each car was road-tested using a separate set of wheels and tyres to ensure each example was delivered in flawless condition before being carefully crated and shipped to their new owners.A meticulously-crafted tribute to one of the most important machines in automotive history, this 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen Recreation is offered in beautiful condition, having been cherished and run sporadically as a party-piece but seldom driven. Sold in running and driving condition, accompanied by detailed operating instructions, it's sure to carve out a niche in any collection, whether one’s interests lie in significant early motorcars, the history of Mercedes-Benz, or purely historical artefacts.SpecificationMake: BENZModel: PATENT MOTORWAGEN REPLICAYear: 1886Chassis Number: TBCRegistration Number: N/ATransmission: ManualEngine Number: TBCDrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 1 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: LeatherClick here for more details and images
Lovely Bullnose Cowley open-tourer that's lived a full life including a little silver screen provenance. One of the best-known and most readily recognised vintage cars, the 'Bullnose' Oxford had its roots in the Edwardian era. The first examples, fitted with 8.9hp White & Poppe engines, were manufactured in 1913, embodying Morris' successful formula of offering technically unexciting but well-built and well-equipped cars at a bargain price. Production at Morris' Cowley factory began in March 1913, and by the end of the year, 393 cars had been sold. The Oxford and its close relation, the Continental-engined Cowley, evolved gradually, both models switching to engines made by Hotchkiss' Coventry subsidiary in 1919. A close copy of the Continental, the Hotchkiss engine was built in 1,548cc, 11.9hp form initially, a larger (1,802cc) 13.9hp version becoming available in 1923. A more conventional flat-fronted radiator replaced the distinctive 'Bullnose' type in late 1926, by which time four-wheel brakes had become standardised on the Oxford chassis. All-steel bodies, built under licence granted by the American Budd concern, were another new introduction that year. Easy to drive and maintain, the Bullnose Oxford was Britain's most popular car prior to the arrival of the Austin Seven and they remained a familiar sight on British roads until well into the 1960s.This beautiful, well-cared for example of a 1924 Bullnose four-seat tourer has led an interesting life. It was used as intended as a private car until 1944 when the War effort necessitated that it was turned into an agricultural lorry. Post-War, it remained as a lorry and was used regularly until 1954 when it took to the fields earning a living as a 'turnip spreader', followed by a year transporting spare parts around a garage before being scrapped in 1965. Salvation arrived in May 1967 when our crumbling Bullnose was rescued from the breakers yard by one Kenneth Watson Bruce Esq. who returned it to good health with a smart four-seat touring body. The result was so impressive that SA 6959 was selected to feature as a 'background car' in the 1969 film “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” starring Gordon Jackson and Maggie Smith and set in Edinburgh. It obviously remained in Scotland as it was subsequently purchased in 1970 by Donal Cameron of the Creagdhu Hotel near Fort William, and used for trips up the Great Glen for his customers, before parting with the venerable Cowley in 1986. Our vendor became the sixth custodian in 2013 and he put his stamp on the car by rebuilding the engine and adding an SU carburettor, a well-known upgrade for this model. The car is accompanied by a small history file, buff log book and a copy of a letter from the Bullnose Morris Club confirming its original numbers and some of its fascinating history. It's very well presented with some nice touches including the original Bullhorn, Klaxon and dash-mounted smokers pipe rack complete with an engraved silver Morris Vesta case. We understand that it drives particularly well considering its advancing age and certainly looks the part. A delightful example. 1965 Morris Mini Cooper Mk. I (998cc) Transmission: manualMileage:40798This superb and largely original Morris Mini Cooper is a one owner from new example. Purchased by the vendor as a 21st birthday present to himself on 9th June 1965 through dealer, Wadhams Holdings Limited of Chichester, where he was completing an apprenticeship at the time. The vendor chose to collect the Mini directly from the Longbridge factory production line and subsequently drove the car back to Wadhams on trade plates. With the help of Wadhams he immediately set about completing some modifications to the car which included fitting wheel arches all round and changing the colour from Tweed Grey to the Opalescent Silver Blue it wears today.Since then, the Mini has resided with the vendor at his West Sussex home covering a mere 40,798 miles from new. Dry stored for the past 33 years, this Mini is in very good and largely original condition. It has never been restored but maintained and recommissioned where necessary and as such it is showing some light patina. The paintwork is good, and the original interior has survived very well indeed. On our inspection the Cooper fired up on first turn and sounded fantastic.Fitted with its original and rare Cosmic alloy wheels, matching numbers engine and gearbox, and its original registration number 'GBP 777C'. The history file that accompanies the car includes the original sales invoice from Wadhams Holdings Limited, many old MoT test certificates including the most recent undertaken in 2017, old tax discs, various sundry bills, the original buff logbook, original workshop manual and drivers handbook, original service booklet with stamps, the vendors hand written vehicle maintenance log, current V5C registration document, and the Heritage Certificate confirming its original specification. This wonderful Mini Cooper Mk. I, complete with its excellent history is a real time warp example and offers a one off opportunity for Mini enthusiasts and collectors alike. Offered at a very sensible reserve due to the vendors advancing years, we are sure this British classic will be keenly contested at auction.
1960 Austin Healey Sprite Mk. I 'Frogeye' Transmission: manualMileage:59351The 1958 Austin Healey Sprite was announced to the motoring press in Monte Carlo on 20th May 1958 and just prior to the Monaco Grand Prix. Designed by the Donald Healey Motor Company, the car came under the BMC umbrella with production being carried out at the MG works at Abingdon in Oxfordshire. Its specifications were basic being without exterior door handles; the driver and passenger were required to reach inside to open the door and access to the spare wheel and luggage compartment was achieved by tilting the seat-backs forward and reaching under the rear deck. This cost cutting exercise kept the price down to £669. Power was supplied by a 948cc overhead valve engine derived from the Morris Minor and Austin A35. The cute looks soon led to it being known as the 'Frogeye' in the UK and 'Bugeye' in the US. Its nickname derived from the headlights prominently mounted on top of the bonnet and inboard of the front wings.Originally registered on 19th May 1960 and still bearing its original registration number of 855 PPE, this Austin Healey was manufactured on 21st April 1960 and was despatched to the supplying dealer, Wimbledon Motors Limited on 2nd May. The current vendor is a very knowledgeable enthusiast and he purchased this 'Frogeye' in 2019 and restored the car throughout the lockdown period. Floors have been replaced as have the spring hangers and sills on both sides. The engine is a 1098 unit and has previously had a rebuild with the cylinder head being gas flowed. The head was skimmed giving a compression ratio of 9.5:1. The vendor has carried out additional engine works, replacing the big-ends and also the cam followers, this engine also has a high-lift camshaft. An aluminium radiator has been fitted as have new brakes and tyres. The rear axle ratio is 3.55:1 and fuel is delivered via a Weber carburettor, the original carburettor is supplied with the car. The colour combination is the original according to the Heritage Certificate, the exterior being Nevada Beige and the interior is Cherry Red. Supplied with a V5C registration document and a good collection of invoices, together with two buff logbooks. With the upgrades and enhancements this Austin Healey benefits from it may not appeal to the purists, however if you wanted to buy a 'Frogeye' that has been thoroughly, yet sympathetically worked on and is ready to be enjoyed, then look no further. Often described as a car with a smile on its face, this is a car that is sure put a smile on the face of its new owner.
1960 Austin Mini Seven Transmission: manualMileage:52795The history of this revolutionary motorcar is well known and its impact socially, culturally and mechanically is well documented. The Swinging Sixties, The Beatles, Twiggy and the Mini are inexorably combined to represent an era that is remembered with great fondness by many people. Very few classic cars have seen such a meteoric rise in values as the Mini has over the past five years. The Mini holds an iconic place in British motor car history and in the hearts and minds of any driver, it is safe to say no other car can spark a conversation in the same way with many people having owned a Mini and likely to have a story or two to tell. On its introduction in August 1959 the Mini was marketed under the Austin and Morris names, as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor. The Austin Seven was renamed Austin Mini in January 1962 and Mini became a marque in its own right in 1969. The early Minis have become particularly sought after with 1959 and 1960 examples difficult to find in original condition. The supplied British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate shows this early Mini Seven to have been completed in the colour it still retains of Farina Grey. Supplied to the UK home market, its date of build and despatch was 4th May 1960, destined for Evans Motors Limited in Carmarthen, Wales. Supplied new with a heater, (essential in Wales), but with no other optional extras. The car retains its grey and blue leather cloth interior and presents well appearing very original throughout. Coming from part of a large private collection, the car is reported to run and drive very well and is now only for sale as part of a downsizing of the collection.Supplied with a V5C registration document and BMIHT certificate and with incredibly only two former keepers, this wonderful example is a rare find in such original condition, especially with such low ownership.
1991 Rover Mini JCW Recreation Transmission: manualMileage:8883The Mini had an impressive 41-year build run from 1959 until 2000. This car really deserves the title of motoring icon. Space saving front wheel drive design of the Mini influenced a generation of car makers. This was borne out in 1999 when the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century. The Mini Mk. I had three major UK updates; the Mk. II, the Clubman and the Mk. III. The Mini Cooper and Cooper 'S' were sportier versions that were successful as rally cars, winning the Monte Carlo Rally four times from 1964 through to 1967. Initially Minis were marketed under the Austin and Morris names, as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini Minor, until Mini became a marque in its own right in 1969.This immaculate 1992 example has benefitted from a complete photographic restoration. During the process it was decided to give the car the look of a Cooper S from an earlier era. The no expense spared work was completed over a four-year period has been done well and the paintwork is in good order with a red body and contrasting black roof. Fitted with three front driving lamps and one rear, leather bonnet straps and privacy glass, this Mini certainly looks the part and, we are informed, drives superbly. Not surprising as this Mini is also fitted with Paul Ivey racing steel valves, a Bret Sims fast road cam, a balanced crankshaft and duplex double timing chain, double silicone HT leads, an LCB three branch straight through exhaust, a quick shift gearbox and GMAX shock absorbers and suspension kit. The file for this car contains a V5C registration document, a full list of the works completed and various bills and receipts. The sale of this Mini includes the cherished registration plate. Fun to drive and reasonably priced.

TBCTransmission: ManualMileage: 64,230MOT: ExemptAnother British cult classic of which many people will have fond memories of travelling off on beach holidays, tightly packed in with their family and luggage. Launched in 1953, production ran for an impressive 18 years, over 215,000 were originally made. A very pretty estate with its two front doors and wooden rear frame. This one is offered in rose taupe. Despite being restored all the way back in 2015, it is still very hard to even pick a fault with the car visually. The deep shine is still prominent and there are no signs of rust or bubbling. It remains in stunning condition with both paint and wood in very good order. The white steel wheels combined with chrome hub caps and bumpers really set the car off and it would stand out at any car show. The red interior is equally as impressive as the exterior and shows little signs of wear having been retrimmed in 2015. Morris Newton seats were fitted for improved comfort. The brilliant visuals of this car are backed up by very good mechanicals. The engine starts promptly from cold and runs very smoothly with that lovely Morris Minor burble, the gearbox is also very smooth. A new battery was recently fitted.
