Middle East, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. Small glass jar with a bulbous body, made of clear glass that has aged to a yellow tint. It has small knops applied to the shoulder and body and a clear pontil mark. Glassmakers in the Levant during the early first century BCE invented the technique of blowing glass through a hollow tube to inflate it, which made glass much easier to shape into everyday wares. Within a century, glass had replaced pottery for most everyday use throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East. Islamic glass makers inherited many techniques from the Byzantines and Sassanians, including the decorative application of molten glass. Size: 2-3/4"H x 3" in diameter at the widest point (7 cm x 7.6 cm), and 1-1/4" diameter (3.2 cm) at the rim. Provenance: Ex-private New York City collection; ex-private N. Phillips collection, NY, acquired 1980's. Condition: Minor repairs but stabilized with no missing pieces. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #109041

Pre-Columbian, Southern Peru, Huari/Wari, Middle Horizon period, ca. 650 to 1000 CE. A figural jar with a strap handle and a face depicted and modeled in partial relief and painted with details including tear marks on the neck of the vessel, and a tunic painted upon the body of the vessel, all in hues of red, black and cream. The Huari/Wari potters enjoyed polychrome slip painting and their techniques can be traced to Nazca ceramic technology. Huari imagery is understudied and not much can be said about the precise identity or meaning of this figure. It is likely, however, that the figure represents a living person of high rank or perhaps an ancestor. The plump and compact body resembles that of the mummy bundles characteristic of the Middle Horizon period. The liquid that this vessel contained likely contributed to the meaning of the piece as well. Size: 5-1/2"H (14 cm). Provenance: Ex-private Crested Butte, CO collection, acquired in 1987. Condition: Stable pressure crack on underside. Normal surface wear. Overall very good. #108656
