S. 300Landschaften, Portraits und Figurenbilder sind die zentralen Themen in Flochs Gemälden und Zeichnungen, die Settings wirken dabei wie Bühnenbilder.Mit Ausbruch des Krieges, dem Einfall Hitlers in Paris und seiner Flucht nach Amerika verliert Floch seine österreichische wie auch die Pariser Heimat. 1941 gelingt ihm die Ausreise nach New York. Auf dem Schiff erkrankt seine zweite Tochter an Meningitis, von der sie bleibende geistige Schäden behält. Zusammen mit der ungewollten Emigration bestimmt dieses Schicksal sein weiteres künstlerisches Arbeiten.Neben Landschaftsdarstellungen ist vor allem der Mensch Zentrum von Josef Flochs Schaffen. Seine Figuren wirken geheimnisvoll isoliert und entrückt. Es sind melancholische Szenen, in denen es um Einsamkeit, Stille und Verinnerlichung geht. Umrisse lösen sich auf oder verschwimmen, durch mehrere Fluchtpunkte entsteht oft eine interessante Raumverschachtelung. Diese Szenen wirken eingefroren, Floch konzentriert sich voll und ganz auf die Darstellung des geistigen Zustandes seiner Figuren, Rahmenhandlungen oder Tätigkeiten sind ihm nicht wichtig.Mit Farben, die er mit Spachteln verwischt und deren Grenzen auflöst, werden die Bilder weich und verschwommen. Surrealistische Momente klingen durch, oft erinnern die Szenen an Traumbilder, eine Verwandschaft zu den Bildern Giorgio de Chiricos und der Pittura Metafisica ist evident. Neben der Nähe zum französischen Surrealismus gibt es aber auch Anklänge an die österreichische Neue Sachlichkeit. Floch schafft sich eine Welt jenseits des täglichen Lärms und der Sorgen des Alltags, rein, aufgeräumt und still. Bezeichnend sind in diesem Zusammenhang die häufigen Tagebuch-Eintragungen von Träumen zwischen 1911 und 1974.Assoziationen mit den Bildern Edward Hoppers liegen nahe. Floch kannte Hopper, er besuchte ihn in seinem Atelier und sie teilten bewusst ihre Reserviertheit der abstrakten Kunst gegenüber, beide propagierten das Figürliche. Besonders in der Licht- und Schattenregie und in ihren Effekten auf Räume gibt es Parallelen, ohne dass sie sich jedoch gegenseitig beeinflussten. Auch charakterlich waren sie einander ähnlich; beide empfanden sich als Gegenpol zur Abstraktion, die in Amerika immer mehr an Verbreitung und Anerkennung gewann. Kurzfristig arbeiteten sie an einer gemeinsamen Zeitschrift für die figurative und gegenständliche Malerei. Beide Maler setzten sich aber auch mit der geometrischen Abstraktion auseinander. Inhaltlich verband sie das Thema der rastlosen Lebenssituation des Menschen in der modernen Metropole, dem sie auf ihre jeweils eigene Art eine Welt der nachdenklichen Stille und des Bewegungslosen entgegensetzten. Im Gegensatz zu Hopper sind aber in Flochs Bildern Ansätze zu farbiger und formeller Auflösung vorhanden, er füllte seine Objekte und Figuren mit Farbflecken, die eine expressionistische Tendenz erkennen lassen. Floch reduzierte seine Räume auf möglichst einfache geometrische Formen, deren Strenge er durch Farbmuster und Verwischungen linderte. Die Einsamkeit seiner Figuren mag mit der Situation des Künstlers zu tun haben, einem Gefühl der Isolation, das er wohl zeitweise empfunden haben muss. (Ina Waldstein)

Overall size: 24 x 18 in. (610 x 457 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed lower right. Overall very good to fine condition with no major issues noted (no holes, tears, repairs, flaking, stains, etc.); as found, unconserved, not relined; strong colors. Comment(s): Benno was considered a child prodigy and as a youth was enrolled at the Ferrer Center in NYC, a radical school started by Emma Goldman for gifted students. He was taught by Robert Henri and George Bellows, with classmates including Edward Hopper and Man Ray. Pablo Picasso sponsored an exhibition for him during Benno’s stay in Paris in the 1930s. Benno’s styles included realism, Cubism, still life biomorphic abstraction, abstract art and, eventually, Abstract Expressionism. A significant collection of his works is in the Brooklyn Museum. This gun screen-matches to the scene in which Nord, one of The Deacon's (Dennis Hopper) most trusted advisors, invaded the atoll and defended his ship, The Deez, from The Mariner (Kevin Costner).This gun consists of a metal grenade launcher-like receiver with a blunderbuss-style flared muzzle and a brass stock. It is affixed with leather and rubber wires and hoses and a cylindrical grip on the bottom of the barrel with a lever-style trigger.
