Cyril Edward Power (British, 1872-1951)Whence & Whither? (Coppel CEP 14) Linocut printed in Chinese orange, viridian, permanent blue and dark blue, circa 1930, a strong and vibrant impression, on tissue thin oriental laid paper, signed, titled and numbered 33/50 in pencil, further numbered in pencil, with a dedication in ink in the lower marginBlock 310 x 235mm (12 1/8 x 9 1/4in)Sheet 353 x 275mm (13 7/8 x 10 7/8in)Footnotes:Whence & Whither ? is a dynamic representation of the rush hour commute, which perfectly captures the modern urban experience. The anonymous passengers file two by two down to the platform of Tottenham Court Road underground station as if making the descent into the underworld. In his preparatory sketches Power had used the title THE ROBOTTOMLESS PIT, HOMO MECHANIENS suggesting that the commuters are reduced to faceless robots, cogs in the machinery of the underground. The sweeping curve of the handrail, the curved forms of the figures and the vaulted ceiling convey a sense of a continuous flow of people, whilst the bold contrasting colours highlight the speed and efficiency of the system.Great care was taken in the printing. The degree of pressure used in hand-rubbing the orange and viridian blocks was altered so that the handrail, more heavily rubbed, would stand out, while lighter pressure was applied to areas of fan vaulting in ceiling to evoke a sense of receding space. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
