Millingen (James). Ancient Unedited Monuments. Painted Greek Vases, from collections in various countries principally in Great Britain, Series I & II, 2 volumes, 1822-26, printed title with colour aquatint vignette, and 62 mostly colour aquatint, engraved or lithographed plates, including 40 printed in red and black and several double-page, some spotting mainly to text, untrimmed, contemporary boards, some soiling and wear to spine and edges, first volume with large portion of spine missing, folio Blackmer 1135. The scholar and collector James Millingen (1774-1845) travelled extensively in Italy, and published a number of studies on ancient numismatics and vase painting in both French and English. Following the French Revolution, Millingen was arrested and imprisoned in Paris between 1792 and 1794, and other figures associated with the Grand Tour and early archaeological scholarship, including Denon, Walckenaer and Barthelemy. The present work is dedicated to Sir William Hamilton. (2)
