Meath, Ireland Sale, Sotheby's London, 1983Exhibited: Dublin, Gallery of Modern Art, Exhibition of Paintings from Irish Collections, 20 May - 25 August 1957The second son of the Hon. Frederick Hamilton (d. 1715) and Sophia Hamilton (d. 1748), Gustavus Hamilton succeeded his grandfather as the second Viscount Boyne in 1723. He was a Member of Parliament for Newport, Isle of Wight, between 1736 and 1741, and was invested as a Privy Counsellor in 1763. This picture is one of several early copies after Hogarth's original portrait, which is recorded in the Boyne collection. These copies are likely to have been executed under Hogarth's close supervision, by at least two or three members of his close circle, including Francis Hayman.Elizabeth Einberg discusses this picture in her catalogue, no. 118, pp.196-8, where she suggests that the present lot might be the copy referred to in footnote 3 of the entry.   Condition Report: The canvas has been lined. Light craquelure throughout. There is also an area of flaking to the upper left framing edge (approx. 6cm). Stretcher marks visible. Rubbing and abrasions to the framing edges. One or two spots of surface dirt scattered throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals some light in-filling scattered throughout, but largely along the upper edge. Blackwood, Royal Army Medical Corps, who was captured and taken Prisoner of War on the Western Front on 27 May 1918 British War and Victory Medals (Capt. T. Blackwood); Voluntary Medical Service Medal (Dr. T. Blackwood.) nearly extremely fine (6) £100-£140 --- Alfred Haines attested for the Royal Army Medical Corps and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 15 March 1915. He was disembodied on 31 March 1919. Sold with various postcard photographs of the recipient, both groups and individual portraits; the recipient’s Freedom of the City of London parchment scroll; and copied research. Thomas Blackwood was born in Hamilton on 13 February 1893, and was educated at the University of Glasgow. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps (Special Reserve) on 25 July 1916, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from autumn 1916. From July 1917 he was serving as a Medical Officer to the 33rd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Captured and taken prisoner of war on 27 May 1918 near Berry-au-Bac, he was repatriated on 30 October 1918. He subsequently had a career in general practice in Motherwell, and died on 15 June 1978. Sold with copied research.

Roland Morris collection.  H.M.S Colossus The Story of the salvage of the Hamilton Treasure Roland Morris first edition 1979 signed, together with another unsigned, five copies of 2006 reprint, a French version, The Treasure of the Assoiciation 2007 and Sunken Treasure by Roland Morris. Roland Morris was a well known maritime archeologist, historian, writer and entrepreneur based in Cornwall, particularly Penzance. His most famous discovery was the wreck of the Association also working on other major wrecks around the Cornish coast. He also opened the Admiral Benbow a much celebrated pub filled with nautical themed decoration.
