A Trafalgar-related gold memorial ring for John Scott, 1805The gold band with black enamel dedications, inscribed 'FELL IN HIS COUNTRY'S CAUSE AT THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR OCT 21 1805 J:SCOTT ESQ:AET:41', London hallmark, ring size approx. P½Footnotes:John Scott (1764-1805) served as Purser and was Nelson's trusted principal secretary on HMS Victory, dealing with the majority of his public correspondence. He was a close friend of both Nelson and Emma Hamilton, and spent time with them at Merton Place during the summer of 1805. Scott was famously by Nelson's side at Trafalgar, stationed on the quarter deck of the Victory, when he became the first officer to be killed in the battle. Nelson took his own fatal shot whilst standing in almost the same spot an hour or so later and it is thought that the blood that can still be seen staining his uniform (now held in the National Maritime Museum) is that of Scott. Provenance:The family of John Scott, gifted to Thomas Masterson Hardy; thence by descent within the Hardy familyFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
NELSON'S HAIRSeveral strands of hair believed to be that of Admiral Lord Nelson, contained in a paper packet bearing the manuscript inscription 'The Hair of Admiral Lord Nelson sent by Lady Hamilton after the death of the Hero to The Prince of Wales 17th February 1806', paper watermarked 'W King/ 1840', folded packet 60 x 102mm.; with a priced catalogue for the Portesham House sale, 17 June 1938 (2)Footnotes:Provenance: Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769-1839)Thence by descentAccording to the inscription on the packet, presumably written by a member of the Hardy family, the enclosed strands of reddish-brown hair touched with grey were originally sent to the Prince of Wales by Emma Hamilton. Surgeon William Beatty records in his 'Narrative of the Death of Lord Nelson' that Nelson requested that Lady Hamilton should have his hair, and it was Captain Thomas Hardy who was charged with this task after Trafalgar. The remnants of the pigtail are now held at the National Maritime Museum. The watermark on the paper dating it to 1840 would indicate that the strands were probably returned to Vice Admiral Hardy after the death of George IV in 1830, and subsequently packaged up and docketed during an inventory of Hardy's possessions after his death in 1839. It was offered in the sale held by Dukes at the Hardy family home, Portesham House, Dorset, on 17 June 1938 as lot 146 and was one of the more expensive lots in the sale, selling at £11. However, according to a note in the catalogue (a copy of which is included in the lot) the sale was cancelled and it was returned to the family ('Refudiated by bidder as wrapping paper is watermarked date 1840. He was under the impression that this was the lock of hair from Mr Bridge's sale at Puddletrenthide [sic] in 1911'). The sale he refers to is the sale of works of art and historical relics of John Bridges and John Gawler Bridge, The Manor House, Piddletrenthide, 20 September 1911.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

enamel with foil in copper, within white metal mount5cm acrossFootnote: Literature: Cumming, E. Phoebe Anna Traquair 1852-1936 National Galleries of Scotland 1993, p. 85, no. 121, p. 82, no 101 Note: Traquair learned the craft of art enamelling from her friend Lady Carmichael in 1901, and over the coming decade her enamels would be set either as jewellery (notably pendants and necklaces) or ‘architectural’ formats such as triptychs in stands often designed by her architect son Ramsay. They were exhibited both in Scotland and in London with the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. Her fine enamels soon became the craft for which she was best known south of the Border, with The Studio critic commenting in 1906 that ‘the qualities which are attained in enamel by a worker with a sensitivity to colour make it peculiarly a medium which satisfies an artistic nature ... that enamelling is Mrs Traquair’s medium we do not doubt’. Her subjects, painted on copper or more occasionally silver or gold, were taken from classical or religious subjects, the latter often popularised as angels comforting or watching over female figures. A pendant, necklace or the occasional brooch, set to her design by John Maitland Talbot, Hamilton & Inches, Brook & Sons or (after 1909) Henry Tatton would sell for two or three guineas.Traquair the artist always gave her craft pieces titles, and The Dream copies the central plaque of a 1906 necklace of the same name. Enamels that were admired or which she herself found particularly satisfying were duplicated, with a number remaining unset in her studio. One such unmounted piece is The Dream, given to the V&A by her granddaughter and dated 1909. The enamel is from the same date: the setting may be by Brook. The dream concept was one that greatly appealed to her, and was introduced to her Mansfield Place Church mural where Joseph’s dream is central to the Old Testament narrative on the nave’s south wall (1900). A dream image was also present on the Lorimer piano painted for Frank Tennant as part of her illustrations of The Song of Solomon (National Museums Scotland). With thanks to Elizabeth Cumming for her footnote for this lot

CAROLINE HAMILTON (1777-1861)'His Lordship's Country Seat in the true Modern Taste'A satirical landscape showing a coach and pair struggling up a hill to a 'modern' mansionSigned C. Hamilton decit 31st January 1798Watercolour and collage, 33 x 43.5cmNothing escapes Caroline's acute eye. She quotes from the poet Cowper "Our father's knew the value of a screen …" whilst here the elevated 'post-modern' block of a house receives windswept visitors, park trees struggle to grow, mature trees are cut down, the demesne is entered by a pretenius?? coronetted gateway whilst beyond is a thatched cottage.Caroline Hamilton was the daughter of William Tighe of Rosanna and Sarah Fownes of Woodstock. She married Charles Hamilton of Hamwood in 1801. Brought up in a family that stressed education for daughters that included Continental tours and the appointment of John Spilsbury the Harrow School Art Master as tutor. She later made a protégée of this man's niece, Maria Spilsbury Taylor. Influenced by the family's support for the Christian evangelist, John Wesley, her social conscience found expression through the medium of her training in drawing and watercolours, and she became a true satirist. Her cutting depictions of Dublin society castrated by the Act of the Union are known. She was also the main beneficiary of the will of her cousin, Sarah Ponsonby, the surviving partner of Lady Betty Butler, the Ladies of Llangollen.
ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES JERVAS (C.1675-1739)Portrait of William Tighe of Rosanna, standing in a landscape wearing a white dress and with a favourite dogOil on canvas, 105 x 128cmIn a fine 18th Century carved giltwood frame, the sides with floral pendantsProvenance: Hamwood House, Dunboyne, Co. MeathThis charming portrait depicts William Tighe, b.1710/11 in a dress, as was the early Giorgian fashion for boys aged up to twelve years old. He became an MP and married Lady Mary Bligh in 1736. He led a charmed life, building the delightful house, Rosanna, in Co. Wicklow in 1740, holding undemanding jobs such as keeper of The Phoenix Park, maintaining a house in Dawson Street and winning £10,000 in the Lottery. His granddaughter Caroline Tighe married Charles Hamilton of Hamwood which is the likely explanation for the paintings presence in the Hamwood collection.
