Andy Warhol produzierte einige der berühmtesten Porträt-Bilder des 20 Jahrhunderts: Seine Siebdrucke mit den Köpfen von Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor, Mao Tse Tung oder Elvis Presley sind weltweit bekannt und hängen in den wichtigsten Museen, wurden aber auch millionenfach auf T-Shirts, Tassen oder Plakaten reproduziert. Warhol beschäftigte sich intensiv mit dem Phänomen der Celebrity- bzw. Star-Besessenheit der Massenmedien, die ihn einerseits faszinierte – war er schließlich selbst Teil davon – andererseits machte er sich aber auch durchaus gerne darüber lustig. Nach seinem berühmten Zitat aus dem Jahr 1968 “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” wurde er in Interviews derart häufig befragt, dass er, genervt davon, begann, es mit der Zeit bis zur Sinnlosigkeit zu variieren. Gemeint war aber, dass die Medien es jedem ermöglichen sollten (bzw. können), berühmt zu werden – ein Phänomen, das sich bewahrheitet hat, aber gleichzeitig die Kurzlebigkeit und Vergänglichkeit von Ruhm veranschaulicht. Ein gutes Beispiel ist das wechselnde „Gefolge“ Warhols in den 1960er und 70er Jahren von ansonsten eher unbekannten Personen, die er selbst seine „Superstars“ nannte. Abgesehen davon betätigte sich Warhol für viele seiner Künstler-Freunde als Mentor und verhalf einigen von Ihnen tatsächlich zu (dauerhaftem) Ruhm und Erfolg – wie zum Beispiel Keith Haring oder Jean-Michel Basquiat. Für seine ikonenartigen Portraits verwendete Warhol ab Beginn der 60er Jahre den Foto-Siebdruck, um die charakteristischen, klaren Umrisse und die starke Flächigkeit zu erzeugen. Das Verfahren war außerdem einfach und schnell, sodass Warhol immer wieder kleine Veränderungen an ein und demselben Foto vornehmen konnte. Bei den Motiven für seine Bilder entschied er sich bewusst für jene, die bereits so berühmt waren, dass jeder sie wiedererkennen würde.
