Mitelli, ein Künstler des ausgehenden 17. Jahrhunderts, hielt in kleinformatigen Druckgraphiken die Berufsdarstellungen seiner Zeit fest. Möglicherweise in Anlehnung daran schuf Baselitz Mitte der 1960er Jahre großformatige Gemälde, die zentrale Figuren vor unterschiedlichen Hintergründen und mit variierenden Accessoires zeigten. Fest mit beiden Beinen auf dem Grund stehend, mit nach vorn gewandter Körperhaltung und in bukolischen Umgebungen waren diese Protagonisten zumeist von großer und kräftiger Statur. Auf dem zweiten Blick erschloss sich bei näherer Betrachtung dieser ‚Heldenbilder‘ eine inhärente Fragilität. Diese ‚Helden‘ waren verletzt, ihre kräftigen Körper waren teils mit einem viel zu kleinem Kopf dargestellt. Der Blick müde. Während Andy Warhol in den USA die Elvis Figur zum Motiv einer Siebdruck-Serie macht, mit hochstilisierter Frisur, auf kühlem, silbernem Grund dargestellt, malt Baselitz seine männlichen Figuren mit zerzaustem Haar, die Bildsprache an die Romantiker des 19. Jahrhunderts erinnernd. Und während Andy Warhol seine Motive zeitnah in Serie wiederholt, greift Georg Baselitz erst Jahrzehnte später auf seine früheren Motive zurück.Das hier angebotene Gemälde ist von 2007, 40 Jahre nach den Heldenbildern, und durch eine deutlich frakturierte Komposition, einer gevierteilten Bildfläche, gekennzeichnet. Während bukolische Elemente in der Neuinterpretation fehlen, ist die Wiederverwertung, bzw. Umkehrung des Heldenthemas evident. Baselitz, der die Sehgewohnheiten seiner Betrachter immer wieder auf das neue herausfordert, bedient sich in dieser Komposition visueller Zäsuren innerhalb der horizontalen Flächenorganisation. Einerseits setzen sich die vier Flächen malerisch voneinander ab, andererseits wechseln sich feurige Pinselführung und pastöse Farbigkeit mit freigelassenen Flächen und Andeutungen von Spritztechnik ab. Auch auffällig: von oben nach unten wird die Farbpalette immer weiter reduziert, bzw. ausgeblutet. Die Figur des Hundes ist zu einer isolierten, monochromen Bildmetapher geworden. Die dargestellte "Hitler-Figur" ist zerstört, und das Ausbluten der Farbigkeit erweist sich als Metapher für die verbrannte Erde und die stattgefundene Zerstörung. „Die Ästhetik von Georg Baselitz wurde zurecht als eine ‚Ästhetik der Brüche‘ bezeichnet (Theo Kneubühler, in: Documenta 6, Bd. 1, Kassel 1977, S.54). Es ist seine Absicht, revolutionär zu sein, ohne allerdings dabei das Bild und die Skulptur selbst in Frage zu stellen. Im ‚Zerstören‘ ist er ein europäischer Künstler. Er tut genau das, was er als Charakteristikum der Entwicklung europäischer Kunst erkennt. – Der jeweils gegenwärtig gültige Kanon wird negiert. Indem das Neue gesetzt wird, wird das eben noch Gegenwärtige zu Vergangenem und zu Geschichte, an deren Stelle sich das Neue setzt und dasselbe Schicksal erleiden wird, erleiden muss. Tradition erscheint in dieser Sicht nicht als ein nahtloses, additives Kontinuum, sondern wesentlich unstabiler, wirrer und konfliktreicher.
